With the recent loan forgiveness in the US, I expect there to be a huge spike in scams. Make sure you verify which website you’re on!

If you have Telus, they have a feature for this – called Call Control. You can ‘pre-approve’ phone numbers, and anyone else calling has to enter a number to get put through (once they do it the first time they don’t have to do it again). In the 3 years since I turned it on I’ve never gotten a robocall!

    • Daltón

      November 30, 2022 at 5:46 pm

Doesn’t that make it impossible to get random calls you DO want? For example you applied for a job and they call you for the first time

  29. Missymousie

    November 30, 2022 at 5:00 pm

I think another reason scammers are in the military is because it’s easy to go on ‘secret missions’ where they can’t tell you where they are, they can’t take photos of where they are.

The scam centers in India are allowed to operate, because the police isn’t doing anything about them due to corruption. The US and EU should threaten India with blocking of all communication until the problem is fixed, that would set them right up.

Okay. Let’s say your car *did* supposedly have some drugs in it. First of all, the FBI would never ask for money in return for charges to be dismissed. They can’t even do that, that is for a judge and the jury to decide based on evidence at trial.

Also, they will NEVER ask for it in a gift card, or in a box wrapped in aluminum foil.

It is so much effort though I haven’t done it in a while and just let the calls go to voicemail which i get many of every day.

  52. beeble2003

    December 1, 2022 at 7:26 pm

“How do scammers get our phone numbers?”
They’re just numbers. Anybody can “get” a number. You just pick an area code and dial every combination of digits. They don’t know it’s *your* number. They just know that it’s a number, so they call it and see what happens.

My hubs was telling me about a woman wanting him to buy things off Amazon for her, have her pick up the item or items in her local area, that she’d have to pay him back. 🤨🤔
I see a possible connection as to something that’s been recently happening. And he said that she was a CSR (customer service rep) for Domino’s.
He made, as far as I could find, 3 Amazon orders to be picked up at a Whole Foods location in Colorado.
And no, we aren’t anywhere near Colorado.

Tell me I’m not wrong for thinking all of that is sus!

every time you sign up for an account on a website, they get your email address, which is then sold to cybermarketers. some require a phone number, which then gets sold to telemarketers. and sometimes, these legit firms sell their contact lists to scammers.

I live in a region of Canada where there’s an “air duct cleaning service” that calls even people on the do not call list.

When I get these calls, I tell them that I have a mansion with 50 rooms. When this is discovered, they call over their supervisor who physically punches/harms the little scammer underlings and shouts at them in a foreign language, telling them not to be stupid and to hang up because I’m just wasting their time.

But what if I have a 50 room mansion that needs to be cleaned?

about that grammatical error. scams with this kind of error usually have two scams. one is with the grammatical errors, it’s job is to make people feel safe that they notice the errors and avoid it, but at the same time, feeling more and more safe to grab the second scam that doesn’t have the grammatical error. “ugh, grammar error, avoid this” “now this one is legit” (although it’s also a scam).

I receive close to ZERO scam phone calls. How do I do it? I don’t say, “Hello.” The machine on the other end is waiting for someone to say something before it starts playing its message. After about 5 seconds, I make a non-word noise like, “Hmm?” That way if there is someone there, they respond. After about a week of doing that, the number of scam calls drop off like a rock. And after a month, no one calls anymore. Simply picking up the phone and accepting the call costs the scammers a little bit of money per minute (rounded up).

6:55 terrible example, Jim just isn’t as smart as he thinks he is, he fell for a really simple phishing scam.

Generally unless you are wealthy enough to be targeted by a team with a real budget for a specialised scam designed just to hook you for a massive payout, then a modicum of intelligence will mean you won’t get scammed, only stupid people fall for these scams and only lazy people or over confident complacent people fall for phising.

I worked as a Western Union agent through an old retail job for a while, and I can safely say with confidence that it is merely a money transferring service and actively tries to educate to avoid its customers being scammed. During training I was taught signs to look for, questions to ask, things of the sort. If we are sure the customer was being scammed or otherwise money laundering, we have forms we can fill out that will flag WU to halt the transaction and investigate. Beyond that, they do also halt transactions they find suspicious anyways. Better to have more false flags and minorly inconvenience folk than have more folk scammed out of significant amounts of money, I’d say!

here is the thing. when they send you the first scam email you may not notice that it is a scam so you reply but, if you have a couple functional brain cells, you will eventually catch that it is a scam and they will had lost time with you.
the spell mistakes ensure that only the most gullible people will believe it. you need to be almost illiterate to not notice those spell mistakes. that people are easy to trick.

I can’t say for sure if this is true so don’t take it at face value but I find it hard to believe that they made those mistakes because it’s their third/fourth language. english is my third and this is a simple comment at youtube. there’s no money involved. with money involved, you want to be as careful as possible. you will have the initial message prepared with time and double checked to make sure it’s as intended.

how can I know if an apartment is a scam? the most basic rule. if it’s too good to be true, it’s false.

rule number 1 of common sense. if you believe you are smart, the chances of being scammed raise exponentially. nothing is easier to scam than somebody that believes to be smart. they become careless.

I’ve gotten scam calls and I just automatically knew they were scammers. I kept them on the phone with them thinking they’re going to get something out of me. I ask questions and let them think they’re doing a good job at scamming me. I finally start saying really filthy and vulgar things to them. Then they realize they’ve wasted their time. Then they curse at me and hang up. I call them back and say more filthy and vulgar things and they hang up. Makes me happy that I wasted their time. 😁

About a year ago when I very nearly got dox-scammed, I would have asked if there was a legally sound way to make the scammers outright suffer. Now, I think it’s good enough to just deny them the chance to get to you in the first place.

ANYBODY can be scammed. However, it’s very easy to identify and avoid just about every single type of “low effort, spray and pray” type of scams. Nobody should be falling for those type of scams. It’s when you get specifically targeted by a much higher effort scam, that’s were even the best of us can fall for it.

I show her what to look for in emails and look over them, I tell her not to click on any links in messages, I tell her to only stay on secure legitimate websites, etc. I helped her get rid of one scammer who kept calling her by literally Rick rolling him the next time he called (and he never called back)

I appreciate everything you (addressing Trilogy Media) do but please, when you make a prank in the future, please don’t use live animals, don’t cause them harm, they’re sentient beings and you don’t need to put them into perilous situations. We know that scammers don’t care about human life, then non-human animals are in an even bigger danger. You can very easily use something that is gross, unhygienic or has shock value.

there are ways to avoid data harvesting online but it’s generally not practical for most users. a good VPN can help, as well as setting up your browser to spoof and randomize your data. having multiple email addresses helps, as well as only using your real PII on official documents that require it. my name is not Tommy nor is there a V anywhere in it.

A lot of your data is gathered whenever a big company gets hacked as well! They sell it on the dark web, for example, for crypto.

Not all Indian people in America working in stem are undercover scammers. Those who are, are probably getting blackmailed. Same thing goes with Canadians involved in these scams. You’re not risking a better life for a scam and India is a society where reputation is huge.

A lot of these scammers are affiliated with India’s underworld. Those people more or less control large parts of India. You do what they tell you to do or else.

Got scammed a few years back by a website that seemed legit. First result on Google, selling refurbished electronics goods for prices slightly cheaper then other computer part resellers, about $50 cheaper. It was also the holiday season.

Turned out the whole thing was a scam, never got my product, email took me to some perfume company, and I lost $500.

Like these guys actually put 110% into this scam site. Looked just like the other PC resellers I usually use that are legitimate.
