Does not having organic waste in landfills prevent the breakdown of the non-organic material?

    • GreyPunkWolf

      April 20, 2022 at 11:19 pm

Depends on the organic waste and the material around it, but yes. Organic doesn’t mean acid-free, for example.

Not even talking about organic waste that creates toxic fumes around specific minerals… Yeah segregation of waste has a real purpose.

This man is so wholesome. I could totally see him starring in a Disney Pixar film set in NYC featuring a young dump truck finding his way in the big city with the help of his sewer rat sidekick.

The fact that the word garbage still means something is sad. In reality, there’s no such thing as garbage. That’s just a word we use to be lazy. We need better packaging materials and rules to make recycling and reuse more efficient. We also need a recycling system that actually works. All matter still has usefulness. You just need to get it to where it can be used.
Even the plastics that can’t be recycled in a conventional way, can be shredded and used as a bulk filler in concrete mix. They can even be melted and used to fill potholes.

Big business has convinced people that solving the waste problem is is on _us_ individually where in reality corporate profits depend on society bearing the cost of all this waste – made even worse by engineering products for premature obsolescence. The entire program of recycling was the brainchild of marketing departments in response to environmental movements. It’s past time to place the blame for all this crap we’re being sold where it belongs: squarely on manufacturers. The only way to really begin to solve this problem is where it starts: at the point of production.

If you have a very costy trash problem:
    a) recycle trash (future technologies dig, sort, chemical processing for new material), as a last resort
    b) a trash fueled power plant providing heating as a service over isolated pipeline networks could also free fulfilled trash depots space.

Well, I know who NOT to ask: anyone that supports any green party.
Practicality and IDEOLOGY don’t mix. As proven by the latest rampant wildfires in California, because apparently, fire breaking lines are a BAD THING ( according to greenies). But having a third of your country literally on fire is apparently GREAT for the ecosystem.

Also, we have deserts. And space. Not today, but we got space. And space is biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig.
Get out of the way, shut up, and we humans will solve the problem for you.
Just shut up. And don’t vote, that will help everyone involved. And shut up. Twice, because I know you FEEL the need to screech your idiocy.

NYC has 8.8 million people and over 3 million tons of *residential* trash? That comes to over a third of a ton of trash per year per person, maybe 700 pounds or so. I wouldn’t have thought it was possible for one person to create that much trash. Are you including recycling in that?

Before they brought in municipal composting here, I used to dump a large garbage bag (not full usually, but dumped because it was too smelly) maybe once a month or less. I doubt if it was more than 20 pounds a month (given that I have trouble lifting a 20 pound bag of rice), not counting recycling of cans, bottles, and paper — that would be around 140 pounds a year of garbage, though it’s hard to be sure because I never kept track of how often I emptied the garbage.

Now I dump five, maybe at most ten, pounds of compost every two weeks*, plus a fairly big box of recyclables (maybe another ten pounds every two weeks for the recyclables). I suppose the compost adds up to more than I was aware of — hard to believe it, but that means potentially 125-250 pounds of compost a year. I know a much larger proportion of my trash was compostable than I had realized, just by how long it takes my unsmelly kitchen garbage to fill up now. Still, a third of a ton per year per person sounds like an awful lot of garbage for anyone to create. I can’t imagine making that much trash, unless perhaps I ate pizza and threw away a pizza box every day.

    * I know that it’s that much — however much it is — every two weeks specifically, because I now have a cleaner who comes every other Wednesday. If I had a scale I’d weigh it, because now I’m curious how much compost I generate.

For those of us living in a house with some yard, make a hole in the dirt and dump your grease in there. You can probably dump all of your bio-waste in a hole in your yard. I wonder if people do.

  193. Galaxis

    May 15, 2022 at 5:55 am

When _all_ the land fills fill up… in short, the Earth is huge. There is still plenty of room when it comes to the question of just dumping stuff. But yes, it will end up being a problem here or there if we don’t think ahead. I mean, we do want to dump trash near where we are living instead of having to drive hours to get to a dump. That would be costly at best.

  194. INAUGRINATOR

    May 15, 2022 at 12:36 pm
