When Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold 5 at its Galaxy Unpacked event, it highlighted a handful of changes to the phone’s design. The Z Fold 5 has a new hinge that lets the phone close completely shut; Samsung calls it the Flex Hinge and claims it helps make the foldable phone more durable. Another improvement is Z Fold 5’s folding screen, which is brighter than the one on last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 4. But at $1,800, is it worth it? CNET’s Patrick Holland has tested the Galaxy Z Fold 5; here’s his review.

Danny Winget’s fold 4 versus fold 5 camera comparison tells a way different story. Yup, some pics may be similar, or better on fold 4, but overall Danny was impressed with fold 5. I’ll take his word over yours. Tyvm

6:21 this picture and the next one prove the camera software is definitely better. Would have been nice to get new lenses as well but the software is absolutely working better on the 5 vs 4

I gave the folding phone idea a try last year with the Flip 4 and I like the idea enough that I preordered the Fold 5. Remarkably with the trade-in deal offered by Samsung, I am getting $200 more for trading in my Flip 4 than I paid for it 11 months ago.

2 missing improvements are wider screen and better camera.

I’ve been loving my Z Fold 4 for the last year with zero issues at all other than not liking the skinny outer screen. I did a trade in for the Z Fold 5 and also got a big discount on the Watch 6 Classic. FedEx has it listed for delivery on Tuesday which is 3 days early.

I love watching Patrick’s reviews, even when it’s a product I’m not interested in! Sometimes though, I wish tech reviews would stop focusing so much on whether phones or tablets are a big improvement from the prior model. This is almost NEVER the case and most normal people are not buying a new phone every year. Tech reviews shouldn’t be almost completely laser focused on this.

THIS with the Google Pixel dimensions, would be almost the perfect Fold. (Bezels and all). I’ve owned every Fold and Flip. AGAIN, everyone with use this with and case and almost ALL phones, yet none of any reviews online, review a phone with a case on them. All of my phones from the original iPhone until now, have had cases on them. From the lowliest pauper to the wealthiest king, out of convenience and time, you will be forced to be a case on these. [Full insurance as well.] Lasts about an hour or two longer? It takes about a month for the software to adapt to your usage. Pixel cameras are more “natural”, not better.

TBH foldable buyers dont give a crap about the cameras other than its not trash 😂 however pixel owners who care about the cameras are buying a 1800 device that inner display and experience suck balls when they would buy that camera in 7A for a 3rd of the price!

It’s not an upgrade it’s just an update there’s a difference it’s a incremental update if u go from the z fold 4 to the z fold 5 then u just bought the same phone twice your not going forward your going backwards. I would wait for the z fold 6

I just upgraded from Note 9 to Fold 5 and is completely a new experience usimg it. I think those who use a Fold phone never go back to normal screen phones. 😅

it more like fold 4.5 with minor improvements..

  31. andyH_UK

    August 4, 2023 at 11:40 pm

Unless you can afford it, wait for the Galaxy Fold 6 as if it is like some of Samsung’s prototypes then it should be a major upgrade, with an S-pen silo and a wider aspect ratio. That would make it number one. The Galaxy Fold 5 ATM is just an option in a collective of fold devices that all have pros and cons with no clear winner. If you want to enter the fold fray then get the Galaxy Fold 4 for half-price if you can. The £1900 in the UK, once you buy the pen and case, is too much as all you get back for the Fold 4 is £650, a £1000 loss in 12 months.

Excellent honest review. It looks like if you have a Fold 4, you should wait for a Fold 6 or Pixel Fold. Thanks

Fold 6, possibly. Pixel fold, laughable.

I actually got a surface duo for $215 new and I think I’ll stick with it for a while. My son has the Fold 4 and he loves it. I guess we’re both pretty happy with our phones

I have the z fold 4. I like it, but sometimes I hate it. I got tired of how heavy and bulky it is, especially with a case. I’m upgrading to the iPhone 14pro max.

  37. Nick B

    August 5, 2023 at 4:11 am

There are so many small improvements from 4 to 5 that when you add them all up, the 4 truly feels last-gen compared to the 5. I’m glad I made the jump from the 4 to the 5.

  38. Med Hub

    August 5, 2023 at 5:36 am

Should I buy a used Fold 4 & save money or get the fold 5 for a first time fold buyer?

  39. Arpan Malhi

    August 5, 2023 at 6:43 am

The only two major complaints are first it’s weight..other companies are giving lighter foldable with more battery..so i expect Samsung to do same for this less than 200g would be great and secondly it’s price it should be 1500$ at max

Waiting on release not out yet

  41. David Bishop

    August 5, 2023 at 7:31 am

Great insight so thanks for the review. I’ve been waiting patiently since the first fold and I think it’s time for me to get off that fence, I went to my local tech shop here in Brisbane (that’s Brisbane in Queensland, Australia) NOT the one over the other side of the Bay area. We have a bay too but it’s called Moreton Bay.

Anyway, yeah I got a ‘hands on’ feel today and although I was originally leaning towards the Z Flip 5 the Fold is just way better for my old middle aged man eyes. Having the ability to open the phone to reveal a large screen when needed then close that slab in half is brilliant, as for the candybar / remote control feel for me it’s non existant due to my average hands. Although I get where Flossy Carter is coming from with his Man mits and not liking the closed form factor.

I got to say with all that extra screen space it’s awesome for so many things like gaming, Netflix, You Tube (obviously!) then there’s the smaller S Pen which I don’t know how I lived without as I use Samsung Notes each and everyday. Being a Semi Pro Photographer having this tool as a portable tablet will be a game changer for ‘on the go’ wireless transfer of image files then light tweaking for my socials (Insty, etc)

Currently there is a HUGE discount where I am getting $870 ($572 USD) off including an extra $200 AUD for Pre Order prior to August 18’th.

I went and had a look at Apple to compare prices and their iphone 14 Pro is almost $200 AUD more expensive! I’d be nuts to even consider it plus of course I’d have to get a watch Ultra to pair with the phone so thats almost $3’000 Aussie Dollars compared to $2’000 for a Fold 5 and Galaxy Pro 5 watch which is $1’000 AUD less BUT I am getting a small tablet on top of all that. Really, it’s a no brainer for me to stick with Samsung and enjoy their GALAXY.

Not a case of ‘Apples for Apples’ at all!

Anyways I sold on the Fold 5 and cannot wait to get it in my hands finally after waiting so many years.

Oh, yeah, it’s my favorite time of year! Galaxy Time! My Fold5 will be here in 3 LOOONG DAYS! My Flip5 won’t be here for another 2 weeks, I ordered the Grey, about 1 day later than I ordered the Fold5! I was really thinking hard about it! No MATTE FINISH, IM OUT! LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR COMPARISON OF THE PIXEL & FOLD5!!

I have the fold 3. And I really want to get the fold 5. My fold 3 right now isn’t opening all the way anymore, and I have some minor cracks on my opened display. I can’t wait to get the fold 5. Definitely a big upgrade from the fold 3

Every phone manufacturer need to do every other year upgrade because it’s tooo dam close to last year model

  46. Marco Feray

    August 5, 2023 at 12:34 pm

And this year too I’ll wait for next year Lol ahahah there’s no way I am gonna spend this money for a phone that is basically a z fold 3, I appreciate that it closes flat but there are no other improvements and I still don’t understand why Samsung keeps putting those cameras on this phone, shouldn’t it be the top of the range? Because the price for sure is the top of the range!
