The Samsung folding screen is incredibly delicate. The lightest pressure puts deep scratches in it. There is no way a folding phone with the screen hinge exposed, could ever be practical.

      What are you talking about?

I’ve been using a Fold 3 for 4 months now and haven’t scratched the folding screen putting pressure on it, unless one is purposely trying to damage their screens.

As a Fold 3 user, I’d upgrade to the Samsung Fold G in a heart beat…IF they also had a cover screen like the Fold 1, 2 and 3.

It’s one of two major reasons I chose the Fold 3 over the Surface Duo – just able to use the phone without having to constantly opening it up. It get’s old fairly quickly having to unfold just to do basic calls, legible messages and notifications.

For those that don’t want a screen disturbing or distracting them, there are or ought to be standard options to ‘not disturb/off’ for screens anyway these days.

Until Graphene Battery technology can be made consumer ready. I highly doubt will see concepts come to market.

I just want to bring these foldable devices in the 1800’s to mid-1900’s, casually use them in public, and see people’s reactions. I might get robbed, kidnapped or accused of being a witch but I think it’s worth it if I can resurrect in the present date 😂

I wouldn’t mind seeing a vertically expanding center console screen in cars and trucks- like a 9 incher that stretched to 18 vertically in the dashboard…

  17. Vhsss Tv

    January 13, 2022 at 10:52 pm

Role + fold would be great.

Then the internal display can finally be 16:9
And the outer display can be 18:9.
Only problem would be battery size but 3nm processor & ltpo displays can make up for it,

  18. Paul Ho

    January 13, 2022 at 11:01 pm

I could see wanting a smart speaker to open up into a display, but then what you already really want is a smart display. I cannot see anyone wanting their current smart display rolling up into a cylinder, it doesn’t save space or offer anything productive. This leaves us with not very many use cases for that form factor, no matter how eye catching it is. You’d have to dedicate enough space for the unfurled dimensions anyway; it’s like collapsible laundry baskets, when are you stowing it and not using it? Even when empty, you need somewhere for inevitable dirty clothes to go, and you’re not grabbing a collapsed hamper from under the bed or behind a dresser for the half day, tops, that you have no dirty laundry.

I have the Fold 3 and it’s awesome. It’s a normal phone, and actually increases usable real estate, unlike the Flip 3. To have a rollable screen would be amazing and would seem better than a foldable.

    January 15, 2022 at 4:39 pm

Samsung there “future” tech things are always so Nice, problem thonis the price if you ask me! OR the lack of foldeble LCD s without a Curve and Just a bar and no break points and normal prices .Still this concepts are pretty slick and the coolness of devices is endless like this! A 8 inch tablet foldeble sounds Nice Just tonprotect the screen…but why? So Then you go to 10 inch so IT can fit in a small bag!

Can’t get over the crease(s). Maybe it’s like the notch where you’d get used to it, but I can’t imagine running your finger over it as a good UX for a touch device. Showing 30k folds in freezing temps does nothing for the avg customer — how many people live in the Antarctic that don’t have a warm base station? 🥶

    The rollable phones are promising..
The screens look very durable, as the parts, that roll out, are within the housing, when rolled up.. apart from that, the mechanism are very gentle to the screen…
As a phone technician, i always expect a folding screen to break in the middle, as it’s being folded… so i’m not a fan of these folding things
    If a rollable phone gets announced, i’d pre-order it…

Feel like in future I could use a switch up to a device like one of these. Don’t think the designs really been anywhere near perfected yet though the fold phone suffers a very awkward ratio. That G phone looks ALMOST perfect just sort the camera, have a back screen for when folded in and I genuinely think that’s the sweet spot! Will they do it though? Probably not as it doesn’t have a screen when folded…

I sincerely don’t see a futur for flexible display in the consummer market in this specific form. AR glasses have much more potential in every angle, no ?
Cell phone might be a way for them to fiddle around the technology as oled display’s might probably be incorporated in ar devices.

Yeah….super bulky phones with super scratchable display and creases along the hinges. Just what I’ve always wanted. Folding smartphones are a fad like 3D TV.

  148. mbaxter22

    January 19, 2022 at 1:10 am

Kinda seems like foldable displays just inherently suck by design and there’s no real fix for it (because of the ugly crease that you can’t really get rid of, the compromised waterproofing, and because they wear out mechanically). I predict foldables will be a passing fad. They’ll be surpassed by rollables, I think. Rollable just seems like the more promising tech. JMHO…

Innovation for the next 10 years…. how often can you fold your phone.

Cell phones used to get smaller, now everyone needs a fragile 43″ TV in their pocket, with a standby time of a few hours.

  157. AimlessSky

    January 19, 2022 at 11:46 am

The Flex G display and current Flip display are probably the only practical folding screens for a smart device (To be pocketable but still functional). I can see the Flex G display be used on future Samsung tablets with stylus to make them more pocketable yet still functional. I wouldn’t dive into the rollable displays. Anything with a mechanical moving part is additional risk of potential failure down the road and I would avoid it.

I cant wait for this to become the new normal. Smartphones and tablets have been simple boring glass slabs for too long. So it is time for something new.
And could you imagine a monitor with a flexible OLED Display?

Foldable laptop is no use as long as the OS is still windows. Touch experience is far from normal tablet. I have 2in1 laptop with pen n a tablet, but always end up using my tablet instead for media consumption, note taking, etc. Unfortunately, many professionals/work related sw is still Windows-based only. If not for work, I’d ditch Windows n just go for tablet all the time.

Edited: I mean, what’s the use of amazing hw if the sw can’t catch up? After all these years of touch-screen laptop, Windows still can’t provide good experience to make use of it.
