Growing up in Cincinnati and working at King’s Island in my youth, I’ve definitely ridden The Beast at least a few hundred times. The Son of Beast was fun but too dangerous, unfortunately.

It’s sad how difficult things have become in the present generation. I was wondering how to Utilize some money I had. I used some of it for e-commerce business, but that sank. I’m thinking of how to use what’s left to invest, but I don’t really know which way to go.

The wisest thing that should be on everyone’s mind currently should be to invest in different streams of income that doesn’t depend on government paycheck, especially with current economic crisis around the world. This is still a time to invest in stocks, forex and digital currencies.

  16. @divij.1

    August 21, 2024 at 7:39 pm

He got the first and straight-up question wrong, which makes me wonder about the rest. Just a heads up: Formula Rossa is the fastest coaster at 149 mph, not Kingda Ka, which tops out at 128 mph. Keep the facts straight, even if formula rosa is closed it’s still fast and isn’t always closed either.

  18. @danielcook4712

    August 21, 2024 at 7:55 pm

There is a correct answer to the best seat and he almost nailed it. But the correct answer is. You will
Usually get the most air time/negative Gs in the back, but you will get the most positive and lateral Gs in the front, on most coasters. So it depends on the coaster

  19. @sonyipod

    August 21, 2024 at 8:35 pm

So the first question he got half wrong

  20. @thedude4063

Formula Rossa is the fastest coaster in the world…

  21. @merfalerf2201

    August 21, 2024 at 8:44 pm

Just a small very nitpicky caveat. The reason you feel that weightlessness on a roller coaster is not due to a force cancelling out the force of gravity, you are in fact being allowed to free fall on the ride, which is what gives that weightless feeling. He talks about astronauts, and it’s the same with them! Orbiting the Earth is just constantly free falling around it.

TLDR: Weightlessness is the sensation of falling, not of another force counteracting gravity.

  22. @nickwelty1751

    August 21, 2024 at 9:00 pm

I think with that inverted first drop question it’s more that the angle the track needs to be for the drop to be thrilling would pinch the trains together. The swing allows for a steep drop by curving into it.

  35. @robmausser

    August 22, 2024 at 5:31 pm

Carnival rides seem unsafe because they are pulling them apart and putting them together multiple times, but that also means that they can inspect each part and find problems easier. Sometimes you can’t see a hairline crack in metal fatigue until you pull something apart for example. If anything it might be more dangerous for a ride that is static and is never pulled apart because there could be hidden issues.

Hi I’d like to make a quick correction to the first question answered in this video; kanda ka is the tallest roller coaster in the world BUT it is not the fastest. That title belongs to a coaster called Formula Rossa in Japan, which top speed is 149.1 mph. Kanda Ka goes very fast as well (128 mph), but it’s not the fastest in the world. Other than that great video, it’s so much fun to learn even more about roller coasters!

  39. @meditalisoo7

    August 22, 2024 at 7:14 pm

The Answer about the best seat is really: It depends. On a bad rough ride you really don’t want to sit in the back as it will be more intense. The front is usually not the most extreme but the view is definitely the best and most of the time you will have a smooth ride. On a good coaster the back row is really the best though as it is more intense and you have more airtime.

  40. @PoutsNKsul

    August 22, 2024 at 7:25 pm

2:30 It’s the body’s inertia that counteracts gravity. If you consider it a force, it would be centrifugal.

“The real answer is you need to try every row on every coaster.” So true; sometimes, you get the unexpected and inexplicable best row. The ur-example of that is probably the “magic seat” on Magnum XL-200 (or, as we called it when I was light enough to still ride most coasters, the “ejector seat”); for reasons that have never been made clear and apparently were never even understood by the designers, the best airtime on it isn’t in the front row or the back row, it’s in the third row of the first car, where you get such violent ejector airtime off of every hill that it can actually be painful. There’s nothing like it in any other row in the train, period, and to this day, nobody understands why… just that it’s the closest thing you can get to riding a real fighter jet ejection seat without being in an airplane.

  80. @NoNamerMr

    August 24, 2024 at 4:55 pm

For me personally, the best seat for was in the last row. Not because of the view, but because of the (g) forces. I.e. In the first row coming into the vertical loop, you are the slowest when reaching the top and accelerate when coming down again. In the back tho, you are the slowest right before or after you entered the vertical loop. You then accelerate into the loop rather than just out of it. Same for curves, hills, etc. Plus, most of the time I had shorter waiting times as many ppl will prefer front – mid over last rows :p

    Here’s an important question:

As Americans get fatter and fatter, why do coasters seats seem to be getting smaller and smaller?

Do you not want obese people to go to amusement parks?

I’m not a roller coaster engineer, but I am an engineer. My guess is that over the next 40 years most of the innovation in coasters will be safety related and external stimulus (scenery/water/lighting/etc). What the rider actually feels will remain mostly the same.

    August 25, 2024 at 6:41 pm

1:19 This answer should have been reviewed by a physicist, I doubt it was. It doesn’t apply to steady drops or loops.

We don’t experience weight in the first place, what we actually experience what we sit down is not our weight pushing downward, but the surface pushing us back upward, and that feeling is concentrated on where we’re making contact with that surface, even though our weight is centered in our lower stomach. What we call the feeling of weightlessness is when that upward push gets weaker or disappears completely. When a carriage falls down a steep, steady drop, accelerating under its own weight, that is when riders experience the most weightlessness, because the carriage stops exerting that upward force on them. A similar, though generally weaker sensation of this is felt in loops as the carriage crosses the apex.

The whole centripetal acceleration explanation is a special case of this explanation, and _only_ applies to going over hill crests, which wasn’t in the original question to begin with.

6:55 that’s the thing. I went on F.L.Y. at Phantasialand once. it was an amazing ride. But! I don’t want to go again. You have to leave your stuff in a locker , and they have literal metal detectors in the line, to make sure people don’t take anything with them onto the ride. I thought that was just for show, but no. I can absolutely see how you would lose everything you are carrying in your pockets, and how that stuff would end up in low earth orbit.
I genuinely had to rest for half an hour after riding it.

Tom Scott did an entire episode about rollercoasters and one thing they mentioned thats worth its own tweet reply to the history of rollercoasters is the Flip-Flap Railway which was an attempt to do a loop-de-loop rollercoaster after the Switchback Railway proved you can make rollercoasters. However, the Flip-Flap Railway did not succeed well because the engineers were not physicists and thus… the ride was very uncomfortable for everyone involved

IDK how anyone can ride them, doesn’t anyone worry about the businesses operating the coasters failing to maintain them, and subsequently drawing the random ticket of being on that coaster when it fails. When my wife was a little girl she almost fell out of a coaster that didn’t have a functioning safety restraint bar. When I was 7, I saw a person drown at Disney, while not relating to roller coasters, they just pulled his body out of the water and everyone carried on swimming… like there was just a dead body in that pool, wtf… Then, when I was 9, I went on a field trip where a persons shoe – complete with detached foot inside – fell off an overhead coaster near my group. It was one of those hanging underneath coasters and the guy clipped a loose guidewire that sheared his foot off at about 90 mph… If you have ever been at a park when someone gets injured, it is surreal, they quickly drag the body parts off, hose off the blood, and everything continues as if someone wasn’t just brutally injured by one of the “fun rides”. Almost like they know putting full transparency on their injury and deaths would cost them their business? There is no such thing as a *safe* amusement park, just *safer* amusement parks.

I actually consider myself fortunate to have been on Disneyland’s Magic Mountain when it broke down. That’s because after they stopped the ride, they turned on the lights. Sure, we had to sit there for 10 minutes while they fixed whatever issue made them stop the ride, but I actually got to see what the ride looked like with the light on. Also, after they started the ride back up, they let us ride the ride all the way through a second time to make it up to us. As I said, I think we were fortunate to have that happen.

  182. @liamh3710

    August 28, 2024 at 2:51 pm

Had me facepalming at the start. Kingda Ka is the tallest, but it is not the fastest. You’d think this guy would know that, right?

And before anyone says “I’m pretty sure he meant currently operating” that wasn’t the question. Formula Rossa may be closed, at the moment, but it’s still standing and will reopen. Unless that changes, Formula Rossa is faster. It’s like saying The Smiler no longer had the most inversions on a rollercoaster when it was closed for a period of time. Weird logic.

  183. @BanterMaestro2-y9z

    August 28, 2024 at 7:55 pm

It all depends on what you consider ‘best.’ What do the riders consider best? That is the only measure that matters, and it is entirely subjective.

  184. @davidsongood2627

    August 28, 2024 at 9:24 pm

For any roller coaster enthusiast out there, the twisted timbers at King’s Dominion was recently opened, reopened, reworked a couple years ago. It’s considered a hybrid coaster like he said at the end. It is by far the wildest most exhilarating ride I’ve ever had. When the coaster stopped I was laughing because I had no clue what just happened. The park also has other great roller coasters so it’s worth a visit. The dominator is the smoothest one I’ve ridden and they also have the intimidator 305 which I just found out in this video no longer holds the G-Force record but it used to. My wife blacked out for about 3 seconds on that roller coaster

    • @wilmofosho

      August 29, 2024 at 10:18 am

I just watched the video of the Tower of terror in South Africa. I would hardly call that a roller coaster let alone claiming the record for one drop. The intimidator is light years better

Aren’t metal rollercoasters affected by expansion/shrinking as well with heat? I know it’s an issue with trains, so usually, when laying down track, they try to lay it down at the highest temperature they can, even artificially heating it as they lay it down and weld it to other tracks, as to prevent any bending. Though perhaps they do the same with coasters
