In this episode of Game Over(analyzed), Associated Researcher of Media Culture Lars Schmeink breaks down how cyberpunk is portrayed in modern video games. Most people recognize the cyberpunk aesthetic from movies like Blade Runner and The Matrix, but there are plenty of video games that fit into this subgenre as well. Lars talks about how the cybernetic enhancements from games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution relate to both real-life and cyberpunk fiction.

Lars Schmeink is an Associated Researcher of Media Culture with Hans-Bredow-Institut.

Lars is co-editor of “The Routledge Companion to Cyberpunk Culture” ()

Saying he is a “researcher” is just like saying someone is an engineer, without mentioning if thr type is electrical, chemical, mechanical, software and so on. Does this guy know about technology or about psychology? Both could be researchers and talk about either the realism of cyberpunk or the perception of it and the appeal.

I think the story of Pinocchio might be one of the older stories to influence robot oriented science fiction. The relationship between creator and a creation made in the image of the creator, the creation’s quest for meaning and morality, a soul if you will. You can see the influence in Bladerunner, the works of Asimov, A.I., etc.

it’s an old stereotype about how people who use computers a lot are nerds living in their parents basements. It was meant to be derogatory and imply that they are losers. Now it’s just a phrase thar doesn’t have the same connotation, or weight.

    • Normacly

      January 20, 2021 at 6:54 am

@Pedro Salvador It is clear that corporations has more rights than regular citizens.
Example: Executives in Duke Energy admitted they ignore reports of improper storage of toxic coal ashes near water ways for decades. Therefore, it resulted in the 2014 spill in NC, which spread to other neaeby states. Yet, they recieved only minor fines, and the executvies walked away scout free because the governor of NC at the time was a former board member of Duke Energy. Meanwhile, the majority of the costs were push onto the citizens via tax dollars directed for clean up and higher energy fees by Duke to cover the fines.

  77. replayXstudio

    January 9, 2021 at 9:31 pm

Too much confusion in this video about what “Cuberpunk” is vs “The Future”. Cyberpunk isn’t just defined by technology or the net. Bladerunner doesn’t have an extended focus on all things being connected. Neither does Akira and there are numerous other examples. Just being futuristic isn’t cyberpunk. There is an aesthetic that goes along with it and this video completely overlooks that…Deus Ex is NOT Cyberpunk

    • Moist Banana

Detroit is a stretch, but Deus Ex is definitely cyberpunk.

  78. Mythos

For the record V is a HE, not a SHE….You can choose a SHE but the default is a HE….Sorry but i’m fed up with this political correct BS 24/7….

    • Andreas Egeland

      January 11, 2021 at 7:20 am

In the context of the clip, V was a she. I don’t see how describing what is literally happening in the clip is political correctness. Nor do I understand the idea that any character is inherently male or female. A character has the attributes they have in the final product, not in its original conception.

    • Mythos

      January 11, 2021 at 8:52 am

@Andreas Egeland the same thing has been happening slowly but steadily for years now. First we had Commander Shepard in Mass Effect. The lead was male but after pressure by gamers and feminist groups they also included a female version. I am not the only one around who says these things are happening.

    • Andreas Egeland

      January 11, 2021 at 11:16 am

@Mythos While I agree with you on the broader idea that changing games to include more female characters is political correctness, what confuses me is the idea you seem to have that this means that Cmdr Shepard or V actually are male , even when the game has been changed to make them female.

Honestly, I just don’t see the connection between this video and the issue of political correctness.

    • Mythos

      January 11, 2021 at 1:27 pm

@Andreas Egeland I just don’t believe in coincidences any more…It so happened that the person playing the game in these clips changed the default gender to Female. I don’t know, could be, but with the amount of propaganda we see everyday i just find it hard.

They really shouldn’t have had a list of entirely AAA Games when talking about cyberpunk, do you really expect large companies to actually depict corporations owning the world?

The whole idea of “uploading” your consciousness is completely impossible. You have to ask yourself, what is it they’re uploading? It’s not like you’ll close your eyes as a human and open them again as pure data, it will be a digital copy of your mind, but is it actually you? What happens to the original? Is it destroyed? I don’t think I’d be comfortable with having my mind destroyed to provide a template for a copy that isn’t actually me.

that’s why it’s presented as a spiritual idea, which requires the premise of something akin to an actual soul existing in a (fantasy) cyberpunk world, not the real one (i mean, unless you are not an atheist, but my point is religions don’t stop existing because transhumanism does, they just change. i have an overly negative view of this if it were real but i enjoy reading it in stories)

All these questions should have been addressed through dialogue in CP2077 imo

Credit where credit is due, Cyberpunk is also one of the ancestor’s of the genre. Cyberpunk 2077 is based on a tabletop role playing game, the original came out in 1988 and was just called Cyberpunk.

I’m surprised this guy didn’t know what the ice bath was about. I would think anyone this into the genre of cyberpunk would have surely played the Cyberpunk table top game, or at least would have read the books.
