No amount of couples counseling would have changed the fact that my former partner and I were simply not compatible. The relationship is now history, and the only regret I have was not staying in the friend zone.
@jliller
February 14, 2025 at 6:08 pm
I think a lot of people, especially young people, focus on how attracted they are to someone and not enough on whether the relationship should fall apart if they stopped and thought rationally about it at all.
@mitacestalia7532
February 14, 2025 at 7:14 pm
yeah, this remind me of a couple who bf is basically down to earth while the girl wants to be free. People point it out how they’re just not compatible and it’s better to break up.

Best way to tell you’re not gonna make it: you’re seeking couples counseling. That might be where most people go to get instruction on the best way to split up.

Not everyone wants to be in a couple or married. Not every married person wears a ring. Every marriage is different, so I wouldn’t assume a counselor’s personal experience should guide their practice.

My husband and I have a deeply loving, happy relationship, and we regularly try to help other people experience love the way we do. A big part of that is teaching people the things we do to support one another, grow together, how we treat each other day to day, etc. It is so reassuring and fulfilling to listen to a specialist reiterate the things that we do naturally, and I’ll continue to encourage people to be open and flexible with their partners or potential love interests.

February 14, 2025 at 8:26 pm
1:37 _”The truth is not whatever comes to your mind. The “Truth ” is what is constructive to the relationship.”_ Talk about _oversimplifocation_ ?!?! To limit “Truth” to being wholly constructive, whether in the context of it’s nature or it’s function, would surely be the single most harsh condemnation of every individual on Earth over half the time. Within the psych community, there is this unspoken challenge present with every leisurely ingestion of MHT content on the internet. It’s called, _”Tell me your practice is located in California without actually telling me your practice is in California.”_ .
No purchase necessary to win, though. You can spot them too.

8:40 what you’re saying is very presumptive. It may be the primary way to think, feel, and experience affection for some men, but suggesting this all or nothing attitude about it is disappointing. Why do you focus on the man in this situation instead of the woman to better cherish those intimate moments? There are also women who are like this as well. The right answer is probably closer to working with both. Your answer kind of puts this 100% on men.

All feelings are valid, but not all actions taken on behalf of those feelings are valid.
Definitely something lots of people seem to misunderstand.
It’s not always easy, and sometimes impossible to control our feelings, but we can always control what actions and decisions we make. That’s why one should always accept how someone else feels, and not try to change that, but we can still have (reasonable) expectations as to how someone should behave even when emotional

@JDMimeTHEFIRST
February 16, 2025 at 3:12 pm
I suggest not seeing a couples therapist. My partner acted completely differently around her and I was very emotional and she blamed me for caring about the relationship. I was also undiagnosed autistic and making all the effort. My partner ended up not putting in the effort. And he started seeing the therapist for solo therapy. I feel like that’s unethical. Message: both people need to make the effort for a relationship to survive. One person can’t do it all. And both people need to communicate and keep up affection. If you don’t prioritize each other, nothing will change.

I have a question about relationships and social media. How can I stop comparing my relationship to the couples I see online? Especially when it comes to Valentine’s Day. I saw a lot of couples getting each other beautiful gifts and going on dates and having the man plan it out for his women. It makes me feel envy and also happiness for that couple. I suppose I am just wanting to experience something as magnificent as what I see online.

February 18, 2025 at 6:11 pm
About validateling emptions, a lot of people think this means “the feelings i have are appropriate and i should act on them.” In reality, to “validate” someones emotions is more like “acknowledge”. Validating your emotions looks more like “i am feeling x. I am allowed to feel x.” And stopping there. It doesnt mean “i feel x, so i have the right to act on it.” Or even “i feel x so that means that is the appropriate response.” Sometimes youre angry or sad and thats okay. Whats not okay is blaming those emotions on someone else or acting however you want because of them.

Like the husband, who does not understand that wife will be tired after taking care of kids, if he doesn’t help 🙄 ir the boyfriend, who is “distorting facts”, which we would just call lying 😂 I was listening to her answer and thought, “yep, yep…. so basically lying…. wait… she didn’t mention that word, did she??”

I don’t think romantic relationships are a good thing and I think this world would be a much better place without them. Most fathers hope that their daughter never finds a partner and remain single for her whole life due to the dangers and risks of romantic relationships.
It seems nearly all fathers don’t ever want their daughter to have a boyfriend/husband. The overprotective father thing is proof that romantic relationships are a bad thing, and that this world would be a better place without them.
Most fathers seem to get upset whenever their daughter dates someone, and that proves that romantic relationships are a bad thing. Being single is far safer than being in a romantic relationship. People (especially women) should avoid romantic relationships and be single.

The second poster was exactly the kind of thing my ex abusive fiance was like. He would say mean things and tell people private conversations because ‘they should know they are being talked about’ when all it does is hurt those people and everyone else.
He became abusive VERY quickly after two years together, and those were his excuses for those two years before the words turned into physical violence.

This was mostly standard up until the last question. Sorry, but if someone is distorting facts they need help with coming back to reality, not to be enabled to “experience” things however they want. Yes some situations can be interpreted differently but mostly facts are called facts for a reason, because they don’t care about you feel or experience them, otherwise that’s the root of toxicity.

I think the ‘valid feelings’ one deserved more nuance. You can have feelings that are valid (the bar is simply ‘do you feel them?’) that aren’t JUSTIFIED. Unwarranted jealousy is a common one.

For one part of the couple to maintain ALL cleaning of the household? You can’t make up for that in other areas.

I think my parents are both prone to regress to their inner 16 year old selves. They recently divorced at nearly 70 years old, despite both of them saying its not what they wanted and neither of them thinking they need couple’s therapy or therapy generally. It has me pulling my hair out listening to them both.

The thing that’s weird about the “Don’t want them to have male/female/other genders las friends” is that the couple are not tying the knot upon entering the relationship and getting shipped off to a remote island.
It’s just dating. The life either of them has built up till that point is not going to vanish all of a sudden. Live with it or leave. It’s simple.

I need some advice. I’m in a wLw relationship and I’m monogamous. My gf just told me she thinks shes poly and wants a bf. I’m devastated and crushed. I keep searching for answers. What should I do? I’m trying to be understanding and read up about polyamorous relationships. I am aware that these dynamics exist but I can’t bring myself to do this. I don’t want to lose her. We want to get married and start a family. But she wants a man in our relationship and to be the father of our kids. I’m torn. Should I just do it and will learn to be comfortable with it? Or just end things?

Oh man, that question about emotional regulation is so relevant to my relationship.
My partner is quick to frustration (he likely has adhd) and when he gets loud or grumpy e.g. because he’s running late and has lost his keys again, i can find it very distressing. But he carries so much shame about it that it’s hard to have a conversation about it without him shutting down or getting defensive.
Very hard to find the line between being understanding of his emotions/ helping him avoid triggers, and slipping into trying to control his environment as a way to avoid my own discomfort or just neglecting my own emotions because i don’t want to shame him for his

I like your advice in general and I enjoyed watching your show. I do however find therapy itself to be a bit contradictive. There are times when an individuals personality and character when an issue arises should be considered, but there are other times a more idealistic point of view is the driver than viewing people as individuals. The flexibility should be there for every aspect in a relationships issues.

One thing I don’t really agree with is her response to the ‘what do I do if my family doesn’t like my partner’ question. Just because your family doesn’t like someone, it doesn’t mean they’re jealous. Ask them why. Maybe your family sees something you don’t, they may see red flags. They might see controlling behavior or something that you don’t because you’re starry eyed. I know some people have crazy families who are jealous or bitter and will try to break you up, but always ask for an explanation. It might be a good one that saves you a lot of heartache later on.

I do think there should be limitations in relationships, like sacrifical love. Bc when I get married I will not be trying to have friends whi are girls that my wife doesnt kniw. Bc the many stories if affairs even when they never thought they would. Limitations, like boundaries showcases respect and honor to her
