True answer: because it’s cheap to produce a movie with very few actors.

I walked into the theater expecting to see some average new film and I walked out with new curiosity and awe in my mind. This movie was actually really freaking good.

My theory: in the book there is a moment that can be missed if you’re not paying attention. In the process of designing the machines that will take care of the crew while they are in the coma, a technician mentions fixing a problem with one of the feeding pumps/machines. I think this problem occurred again while the ship was en route and since there was no one awake to fix it, the other two starved in their sleep.
