Founder and Executive director of the Edelman Fossil Park of Rowan University Paleontologist Dr. Kenneth Lacovara joins WIRED to answer the internet’s questions about the phenomenon of extinction. How do we know an asteroid killed the dinosaurs? Where was the impact? Could humans go extinct in the same fashion? What are the five mass extinctions? Why are we trying to bring back extinct species, isn’t it dangerous? Which species came closest to extinction but bounced back? Answers to these questions and plenty more await on Extinction Support.

the example about the California condor only reinforces everything I know about Americans. They completely decimate a population due to their own ignorance, arrogance, and pure stupidity – but then cheer and pat themselves on the back and think they’re the bees knees when they come up with a meagre solution. Every other country would be so embarrassed of themselves, but not Americans. They’re the greatest people at solving problems only they could have caused due to their stupidity.

I just don’t believe that ancient humans could make several species extinct. Could they have made a great impact on it? Sure but I think the changing world post ice age was much more of a contributing factor than Grugg and his brothers

yeah if a mass extinction meteor were to strike, we would know in advance and have some time to prepare. We could try to change its trajectory or we could just repurpose Cold War bunkers and go underground for awhile

I feel like bringing back the mammoth also has huge implications for the species we’re killing. We could find some remains, do some sciency-magic (or magicky-science) to bring them back, and suddenly we’re slightly less terrible for the planet. Humanity is still a cancer, but we’re trying.

Many times, people will say that invasive species are still OK even if they are spread by human activity, because humans (and human migration/transportation of goods) are natural too. Which is of course true – we can’t really objectively say that human activity is “unnatural.”

The issue I think more people need to grapple with is that, if they really understood the issue and were being honest with themselves, they don’t want invasives taking over either. Invasives aren’t just organisms that are “in the wrong place,” they have deleterious impacts on the ecosystem in ways that native plants just don’t. And they often have pretty deleterious impacts not only on the other plants and animals, but on us.

Invasives choke out waterways and make it impossible for boats to move. They destroy species diversity and create monocultural landscapes. They take over human habitations, like kudzu. They destroy things that are rare and special – such as animals that depend on specialized food sources – which we value. They negatively impact fisheries, recreation, landscapes, coastal flood and storm surge protection, and a lot more. We really don’t want invasives taking over, not if we are informed about what they are and do.

He says that we are in an extinction event because of climate change. Then he says we are are in an extinction event because of X number of species going extinct or a reduction in the populations. There are various reasons for those extinctions (e.g. hunting) not all of them are climate change or even close. Intellectually dishonest.

    • @ChriEl-g4v

      January 29, 2025 at 7:21 pm

In the 21st century hunting is not causing any animals to go extinct as someone that is a hunter . Trust me there’s too many hunting rules and regulations to prevent that and to make sure hunting actually benefits wildlife for instance wildlife biologist are the ones that dictate when hunting season starts and when it ends and how long it is, and how many animals you can harvest. Which is a good thing. What makes animals go extinct now is the increase of people. Because when the population of people increase you gotta make room for them. So what do you think happens to the environment? You gotta cut down more trees and Destroy more habitat to make room . And the population of people has increased dramatically over centuries.

  49. @Kushina87

While I agree, if modern settlers were the smoking gun for extinction (ie the dodo or the great auk) they should be brought back, instead of resurrecting already gone species, why not start rebuilding the critically endangered species? Let them get stable, then the species scientists are trying to bring back actually jave a functional ecosystem to return to? Rather than competing for already limited resources?

sharks are very good at acclimating to their environments and their challenges like food scarcity and temperatures and we dont know if reptiles could do the same, many marine reptiles probably did survive past the extinction event but not the 70 ish million years that have passed a since then

    This generation is truly lost.

    • @Vistresian1941

      February 1, 2025 at 8:23 pm

I share the skepticism that newer generations aren’t as interconnected with the information we have at our disposal (especially given the vast sums just on the internet alone), but writing off an entire generation because there are morons who intentionally empty themselves via social media exposure is pretty shortsighted. I’ve met plenty of older people who willingly dive head first into modern conveniences, entertainment and/or sources to collect what they believe to be ‘fact,’ which is often just opinionated conjecture.

It’s not like this guy is pitching *irrefutable* arguments that he doesn’t want anyone to challenge. (13:11)
All positions are argumentative and anyone can create theories that others can either prove and support or disprove and reject.
You’d be better off just giving your counter argument than only repeating the arguments of his you find objectionable.

I’m not defending all of the guy’s points, but there’s probably a better alternative approach to what you’re trying to get at.
