Nanotechnology researcher Dr. George S. Tulevski is asked to explain the concept of nanotechnology to 5 different people; a child, a teen, a college student, a grad student, and an expert. Nanotechnology is the study of objects at the nanoscale (between 1 and 100 nanometers in size). Objects at this size have a peculiar set of properties that differ from objects at the macroscale. Dr. Tulevski does his best to succinctly explain this phenomenon, adapting his language and tone along the way.

Hold on, Why can’t we make carbon nanotube by rolling graphene sheet physically instead of growing it using CVD process? To my knowledge graphene sheets are flexible right?

Honestly, The more I rewatch this video, the more I understand it.

Dude it’s not like you can grab a sheet and roll it to a radius of a few nanometers, and you also need new bonds to form anyway

The last bit of this with genetic manipulation is scary af – biochemical mutational what now? You’re discussing the plot of a sci fi novel where a virus creates super soldiers in particular people who have a genetic propensity towards that evolutionary trait (just as there are those who are more likely to contract certain types of cancers or even coronavirus) my concern is the negative impact of engineering cancers or viruses to occur rather than towards elimination.

17:47 It’s not a virus, but the protein enzyme used in CRISPR (cas9) and other types of gene therapy (and editing) are building gene nano-structures. So It’s pretty well heard of.

I’m only half-way through this video, and this college student is EXACTLY the kind of student I’d want if I was a professor of any sort: smart, humble enough to ask questions, curious, and excited about her field of study. What a cool thing to see. Most college students I know are just there because they think they have to be.

WIRED seems to be mainly dealing with hard natural science, and some foraying into arts (practical or creative) I suppose for this series.

Humanities and social sciences could get fiesty and political even more, though it has already happened on some manner in the hacking video on this series concerning China and Iran.
