Yes the gun violence is tragic. The sad part is it is just like the healthcare system everyone is trying to treat the symptoms and not the root cause which is the despair of a people unable to see the goodness in their lives.

Australia is a great example of how to do it, but everybody thinks Australia has no guns. I have a buddy over there who has more Glocks than I do! They limit weapon power, not your right to own weapons. It Works. Look at the data. Plus the last Aussie who committed mass murder a few years back had to go to New Zealand to do it.

One of the reasons why US gun violence is the highest per is the prevalence of guns. It ain’t the only reason.
A blanket ban on all guns wouldn’t work. we need tighter laws, and very stringent requirements to own a gun.

Look, I sympathize. It’s not something anyone should go through. But what are “common sense laws?” We already have background checks, age restrictions, etc. As @chocomalk said, nobody does anything about the people that get flagged. Criminals are let back in the street by incompetent prosecutors. And the US has the worst healthcare system in the first world. Maybe if people had reasonable access to mental healthcare they wouldn’t reach the point where they become self destructive.
Healthcare here is a joke. I have undiagnosed ADHD and depression. It took 5 months to get an appointment with a psychologist for a prelim interview to an evaluation. Medicare, when queried, then refused to cover an evaluation. Here I am 7 months later with no way to get the medication or help that I need. I’m forces to suck it up while my grades suffer from an easily treatable condition. I am not the least bit surprised people go on shooting sprees.
I am all for reducing gun violence with laws that make sense. But right now, most of them don’t. And the fact is that guns aren’t the root of the problem.

This isn’t an either/or, but instead a both/and situation. The US does not, in fact, have anything near the universal background checks that she mentioned supporting. There are also tons of loopholes, like buying guns at gun shows, which doesn’t require a background check. People who buy guns don’t need any sort of certification or training on how to use or store them properly and the legal age to by a gun is 18, yet we don’t even trust teenagers that age to legally drink. There are tons and tons of things we can do to reduce gun violence and make gun ownership safer in this country. We can also do all of those things AND support policy toward a healthcare system that functions the way healthcare systems are suppose to.

@thinktransnational any seller at the gun shows have to be a federal dealer and the federal dealers have to do a background check at the gun shows. It has been yhis way for years. There is no such thing as the gun show loophole. You have literally been lied to for years and you believe it.

@thinktransnational if you advertise selling guns at the gun shows, the organizer will demand you have an FML to participate. Otherwise they sk you to leave. If someone approaches you unsolicited to inquire about buying a private fire arm that is acceptable by law yes. Anyone setting up a table and advertising they are selling are considering in the business and have to get a license per the current law and legal precidents in court.
Now if you want to argue about private sales that is a completely different than telling everyone that you can buy guns at a gun show without a license. The majority of transactions at gun shows are going through the background check system. Politicians claiming otherwise are blatantly lying to you.

@Alexander Guzman Your argument is still disingenuous no matter how you try to frame it. Even if you have to have a permit to exhibit and sell guns, the fact of the matter is that gun shows bring together all kinds and there are people there that can and will sale firearms privately. Whether it’s a gun show, owner to owner sale or whatever, laws need to be change/update to require ALL sales to require a background check and right now that’s not the case. Only about 40% of firearm sold in the country require a background check and that’s not fair to those that go through the law process of becoming federally legal or the address person on the street hopefully the country that that live in keeps them safe from wildly preventable atrocities like daily gun violence.

This is what happens when a country bases its collective sense-making on myths.
The myth of the land of the free where so many people are incarcerated, the myth of the land of opportunity where so many people are homeless or without healthcare, the myth of old texts so sacred and infallible that they should always be obeyed when societal health is far worse than in the countries which abandoned or changed said texts.
Meanwhile, in the rest of the developed world, people are shaking their heads in disbelief as they watch the US mourn so many innocent victims. They shake their heads in disbelief when they hear people who call their country “the home of the brave” say they need their assault rifles because they are afraid of the government they themselves elected magically turning into a tyranny that they would be called to defend themselves from.
I’m sorry to say this, but background checks are a band-aid. People will keep dying needlessly until the US decides to change its constitution; until the right to own a gun becomes less important than the right to not be shot by a gun owner. Firearms should only be available to the army and security related institutions, like in the majority of developed countries with low homicide rates. Exceptions to this should be very rare, clearly defined and closely monitored.
Hoping that it won’t happen to your child does nothing. Phantasizing that you will eliminate all threats to your family with your gun does nothing. Sending thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims does nothing. Magical thinking does nothing, because the world doesn’t work on magic. Policy should be based on reality, not on myths. And if one is worried about elected officials becoming tyrants, the solution is honing one’s critical thinking skills, learning to embrace unpleasant truths instead of comforting lies, and thus avoiding electing potential tyrants.
