More ways for Amazon execs to see video footage of you. It’s funny that Amazon wants to be known for security when their app store is the worst for malware. And lastly, their ring neighborhood app does nothing but make old white folks more scared of their neighbors, one quick browse of the local Facebook group very effectively demonstrates that.

    • japzone

      September 29, 2021 at 2:53 pm

Not sure how practical the flying chainsaw noise maker is for security, especially since it apparently can’t traverse multiple floors, which would’ve been it’s only major advantage. Astro makes more sense as a roving security camera in that case, as it’s much quieter and can probably be away from base longer, plus it won’t fall out of the sky if something hits it.

    • Claire Reilly

      September 29, 2021 at 4:21 pm

@Morgan’s Lifestyle Videos I didn’t even think of the outside element – can’t imagine Astro’s wheels handle lawn too well!

      Price aside, easily Astro.

      – The drone can’t bring you an unopened bottle of beer without a bottle opener (like in the video lol).
      – Astro can wander around your space completely autonomously for 2 hours as a time with a 45 minute charge.
      — Even following you around keeping your music, audio book, or podcast within hearing range while you’re working around the house.
      — Or following you around with a video call so you can keep in touch with loved ones without interrupting your daily routine.

      – The drone can only fly a pre-defined flight path for 5 minutes with a 2 hour charge and there is no remote control.
      – If the drone encounters and obstacle in its path it just goes back to its dock.
      – Astro has so many features so far beyond what the drone can do from monitoring your home to entertaining the kids.

There’s really just no comparison. Well, except for the drone is $750 cheaper.

Also, I have *clearly* invested far too much thought into this.

  43. K Murph

    September 29, 2021 at 9:46 pm

Weird how they play this up as a cute, cool robot while we all know it’s a cold unfeeling robot behind the set of eyes display. I guess they are fooling someone with that talk.

Not bad for V1.0. Although I am not a great fan of full TFT display left hanging like that and also that stick is quite annoying, I must say.

And of course privacy is a whole different isssue. Discussion for another day.

  53. Scott

    September 30, 2021 at 6:03 am

It’s a cool technology and I am appreciative of it in that respect; however, I really don’t know if I want this thing to stroll by and watch my family shower. Ring isn’t the most secure thing in the world. There is countless footage of people hacking into the system and watching you. This is technology. Nothing more.

  54. Ryu

My mother in law is having mental decline. My spouse is active duty and we can’t live even in the same state. Part of the house in her kitchen caught on fire cause she leaves newspapers on her stove. She forgets her pills and gets lonely. She’s having a hard time using her cell phone and this machine we could see and talk to her in live time. A year ago and now I still don’t like it but I never thought I’d be in the situation I’m in to consider using it.

  61. o

    September 30, 2021 at 1:21 pm

If it could do everything from washing the dishes to making me a sandwich to picking up groceries to vacuum my carpeted stairs and not just washing but folding and putting away my laundry, I’d consider it.

Home security cameras have been hacked into previously: _”Family was watched through Nest security cameras”_ — CBS Chicago
(Incidentally, that incident realized the smarthome hacking from the “Almost Human” [2013] episode “Disrupt”.)

Astro is the equivalent of a roaming security camera — the average person doesn’t want strangers gaining access to Astro’s camera and motor control.

    When the homebots have hands…

Did you ever thought “Alexa is nice, but I wish she could Spy a little bit more?” Well, today is your Lucky day. Astro can not only record everything you say, but also everything you do. It can potentially read Documents, watching you in your Sleep or when you get out of your Shower and knows exactly what times you are at Home. Genius!

  80. James Deal

    October 1, 2021 at 11:59 am

    It’s $1,500 unless you’re a day one buyer.
Don’t confuse people with a $1,000 price tag. Do some basic research.

I would really like to beat the _hit out of that thing. Anything else made with a camera that you plan to enter our personal lives is not a good thing. Are the same people buying this item, buying the new facesmash sunglasses. I know they’re happy for helping them keep tabs on the public. Give me a baseball bat!

  92. Markus Hamilton

    October 2, 2021 at 5:26 am

This is beyond hilarious! Asus created “Zenbo” in 2017 and Blue Frog Robotics created “Buddy” in 2018. The products were just not introduced to the US market. Now that Amazon (OMG, Amazon) copied the idea and uglified the design and of course adapted it for the US market (aka include a beer can holder) it’s all in a sudden the greatest ever. Three or four years ago, not a beep from cnet. Amazon didn’t do anything except copycat an existing product.

$1,000 + $20/month for extra features. And all these “security features” …in other words more ways to spy on you to sell your data/privacy. But hey it can beatbox!!!
