It’s funny how sharks are considered fish and lungfish and coelacanths are as well but a shark, lungfish and ray-finned fish are like the difference between a mammal, bird and a reptile

I would go back to school if I could to completely change fields but for now, more marine biologists please. If you can find someone who specializes in whale communication or penguins I would be so happy too.
I didn’t know there was an omnivorous shark. And I want to know more about that second tagging method she mentioned; the one where they ping their location with sound. So many interesting facts.

I have a crazy story about a shark encounter I had a few weeks ago! My family crab in western Maryland and Delaware, where the water is brackish but shallow. We were putting out 100 ft trotlines with chicken necks every foot in water about chest deep, and we would wade along them with our nets to scoop up any crabs we found. My sister and I were taking the lead as she would pick the line up out of the water for me to catch the crabs. We feel a sharp tug and see a large dark mass in the water a few feet before us. My dumbass was like, ” BIG FISH!” so I attempted to scoop it with my net. NOPE, it was a 5ft bull shark feeding on a chicken neck. It must have been young because it was pretty small, but as I saw its fins and face, I sort of malfunctioned and bopped it in the face with my net. It must have really been startled because it kinda thrashed around and then swam away. My sister and I were absolutely TERRIFIED once our brains caught up to what on earth had just happened. We were so shocked neither of us got bit, but I can guarantee we didn’t stay in that water long after that! It was crazy. I have never in my life seen a shark that far up the river before, let alone a bull shark! I will be telling my grandkids this story when I’m 92 stg.

I believe there was footage a carcharidon carcharius resting in a water jet flow, if I remember correctly it was monitored in this stream of water for around three hours. The Matawan Creek, New Jersey shark attacks of 1912 was the story used by Peter Benchley as the back ground for the rogue shark in Jaws.

  65. Spakko TV

    August 27, 2022 at 7:41 pm

Agree with everything but one point. Sharks are never pets nor are the every living a healthy live in any captivity what so ever.
There are no white sharks in aquariums cause the die within days. Others live longer but like orcas, dolphins or other big predators they live short lives, show unnatural behaviours and often have abnormalities or deformed bodies because the are held in small tanks.
So if you want to see live sharks with your own eyes there is only one correct way. Visit them in their natural habitat by diving… with NO cage. ( it’s not only live threatening for the shark but for you as well, but that’s a whole other story)

Even though I knew exactly what it was as a 8 year old kid. Knowing more than a fuqn adult. Now I’m salty about it again lol wish I would have kept it anyways.

The “most dangerous shark” question was actually referring to loan sharks & payday lenders. While payday lenders are extremely predatory I think the bigger issue is the culture that allows those lenders to exist in the first place.

WOW, someone who knows their stuff, and just answers the question. So wonderfully refreshing. I can also wax lyrical about my ‘profound’ levels of scientific brilliance, but prefer to just try and answer the question. If only the show boating, celebrity scientists, would do the same.

It is likely that the shark is the most evolved predator, a product of 450 million years, (ready formed teeth rows, highly silent scale hide, agile with highly developed senses) , and we’re lucky they live in the ocean!

  138. Clay Butler

    August 31, 2022 at 3:23 pm

I really get annoyed when these experts talk about the chances of being attacked by a shark. They compare it to other unusual events like a lightning strike or a vending machine falling on you. That’s absurd because you don’t have equal exposure to lightning storms, vending machines and sharks.

If you never go in the ocean your chance of being attacked by a shark is zero.

I never use vending machines but I surf everyday. So to say I have a greater chance of being hurt by a vending machine than a shark attack absurd.

I don’t know why they just don’t say shark attacks are rare. And if you don’t go in the ocean it will never happen. And then leave it at that.

By recreating one digitally, they found that a meg can move at 1.4 meters per second

Also, they found that they can eat apex predators the size of our orcas in one bite!

The chances of being bitten by a shark isn’t 1/3.7million when you’re actually in waters (at dusk) known to have sharks. I really hate these cliché and misguided statements. We live in a dynamic world where the % chance of something happening to us continuously fluctuates between 0% and 100% depending on where we are, what we’re doing, when we got there, and what’s happening around us.

Just because it’s a life-ruining event for the target that makes you sad doesn’t mean the shark is a serial killer. If they wanted you dead or eaten why would so many pathetic humans manage to escape an “apex predator” if that predator wanted them off the planet?

My biggest interest in life has always been aquatic life, but for some reason I’ve never found sharks to be very interesting. Thanks for giving me a much deeper appreciation of them.

Correction: “Jaws” _was_ actually based on a true story, the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916, you may have heard it referred to as the Matawan Maneater incident, where 4 people were killed and one injured by what is presumed to have been a Great White or a bull shark. This has been confirmed by Peter Benchley, the guy who literally wrote the book, and by Steven Spielberg himself. The 1916 shark attacks are even _mentioned specifically by name and date_ in both the book and the movie (the scene where Hooper and Brody are trying to convince Mayor Vaughn to close the beaches.)
So, yes, Jaws _was,_ in fact, based on a true story. More than a little surprised that the good expert didn’t know that.

I’m surprised that if shark teeth regenerate, how a scientist hasn’t developed a technology that achieves the same in humans?

There are many benefits to being a marine biologist indeed

  279. Bennu

    September 25, 2022 at 12:29 am

Actually last I checked white tipped reef sharks are most endangered. It’s honestly hard to keep up with. Even the methods of people counting sharks could be completely different. One group can say oh there’s 1500 reef sharks in this area. Another counting in the same area could say 600. Regardless reef sharks have seen about a 90% decline in only a short time. But again it’s hard to keep track of. Especially in the ocean

  280. Bennu

    September 25, 2022 at 12:34 am

Wait so you’re surprised to learn that a species of shark can digest grass because you don’t see that in other sharks. Meanwhile whale and basking sharks exist😑
