Some people get inflammation from the same food. Inflammation due to semi-toxic foods is more common than genetic predispositions.. if your body is responding to the food with inflammation then that means you’re not getting the nutrients out of it, which means you’re going to eat more, so extra inflammation along with a need to consume more because of nutrient deficiencies is the most common cause of this issue

Until we know more: do a few hours of light exercise per week (at minimum), limit your fast food meals to two per week, take in at least half your food volume in freshly prepared veggies, be sure you’re getting sufficient protein and drastically limit refined sugar! These are the rules that help me keep my weight reasonable.

    • Sarah Hodgins

      December 14, 2021 at 7:50 pm

sounds great and I know this is true in theory but it’s -18C out and snowing. I live in an apartment where I cannot do exercise unfortunately. I don’t want to go to a gym due to covid. The sidewalks are roads are dangerous and covered in ice and snow.

Fast food no more than once per week. It is dark and cold and gloomy out so I do not want to eat half my food volume in freshly prepared veggies, and they are expensive too. Unless those veggies are roasted sweet potatoes!

I also suffer from ADHD which has caused severe depression and anxiety among other major issues. SAD is a problem but I did purchase one of those light things recently.

You see, it’s not about forcing myself to eat and do things I don’t want…because I have done this many times before. It just is not sustainable with the other issues.

BTW thank you for your post, it is not meant to criticize and I appreciate it

I work out vigorously for at least 200 minutes every week, eat my 5 a day and onl eat brown carbohydrates and am still technically obese by BMI standards. People’s bodies are different. Muscle and weight differences matter. Genetic matters too

People talk about the physical aspects of obesity, but obesity is far worse than just that. Obesity causes relationship harm which leads to social damage. People are less empathetic towards that they are repelled by. They are less kind towards them and more indifferent towards them. This allows for criminal and violent activity to flourish as people are not interested in the welfare of their fellow community members. This also creates demand for human trafficking. These social alterations create some of the most dangerous side effects of the obesity epidemic.

“People are less empathetic towards that they are repelled by.”
This isn’t the obese person’s issue. If fat people scare you, that’s on you

    • Eli Nope

      December 14, 2021 at 3:58 am

@jacob maez That may be the case in a sense of social duty and obligation, but I am talking more about subconscious behavior. Most people are not self aware enough to be reasonably expected to be able to do that. It’s an unrealistic expectation.

Obesity is food addiction. So it should be treated in a similar way as drug addiction. Create a rehab center when the obese person just has access to healthy food and after a while, most of the cues that trigger the desire for unhealthy food become weaker.

So many researchers study obese people. I wonder if anyone is studying people who are able to eat whatever they want their whole lives and yet stay really skinny, especially if they also have obese people in their families. Because I am one of those people. My mom has always struggled with her weight, so how she ended up having a kid like me is a total mystery. I’d love to know what makes me like that.

  16. Tegan Crutchfield

    December 14, 2021 at 11:31 am

I’d like to share my story. I am not an obese person but I have been larger than most females for all of my life and bullied horribly because of it. It wasn’t until I almost died from a huge tumor on one of my ovaries in which I had to have immediate surgery, that I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome. I have tried numerous diets and workouts but according to my doctor and science, being very small is out of the cards for me. I workout, eat minimally and still struggle. No junk, no fast food. My doctor even encouraged me to try and eat a little more during the day to regulate my metabolism.

I say all of that to make this point: weight loss and size is not always one size fits all. Yes, while having a genetic predisposition like PCOS and other illnesses make it hard but not impossible to lose weight, it is still heartbreaking at times.

Right now I am completely healthy and a normal weight according to my doctor but I always wish and hope to be smaller. However, I realize that is somewhat unattainable as my height adds to my larger frame. The only time I’ve ever been really small (trying to be less than 100 pounds) was due to anorexia which pushed my heart muscle to the brink. I understand however, that I struggle with body dysmorphia according to therapy which comes from being bullied when I was younger because of my weight.

Please understand that everyone is not the same. I am tired of the “stop making excuses”, “push away from the table”, and ” you need self control” types. Losing weight is not impossible if you commit. However, some of us have to claw and fight more than the average person to be healthy due to circumstances which are beyond our control and the narrow-mindedness is exhausting and detrimental to our spirit. Especially when the disease is incurable. I’m not whining, just stating facts. Disease, stress, trauma, and outside factors all play a definitive role in weight management.

I’m already prepared mentally for possible negative comments on my post. If that person is you, then may the Lord bless you anyway.

Hugs to everyone. You are all wonderful inside and out.

@KEMAL C. but many or most DO have medical problems!!

    • Tegan Crutchfield

      December 14, 2021 at 9:15 pm

@KEMAL C. I know what the video is about because I watched it. Again, if you read the introductory sentence to my post it reads “I’d like to share my story”. I have the right to share MY STORY. I did so to encourage others whether you have a medical condition or not. People who are obese know this and they understand how society judges and ridicules them on top of their personal struggles with it. Before I was diagnosed people like you came out of the woodwork. I was just waiting for it. Hope you find what you’re looking for as well, maybe some insight and understanding perhaps?

@Sarah Hodgins I agree Sarah. Thank you commenting that. People judge based on appearance and have no understanding of underlying issues or what’s really going on with a person.

    • Sarah Hodgins

      December 14, 2021 at 10:28 pm

@Tegan Crutchfield it’s a tough habit to break, judging people! Also thank God you didn’t die from that tumour!!

    • Angela Bilyeu

      December 15, 2021 at 2:51 pm

Obesity is a symptom of disease. It isn’t the disease. You need to look deeper to find the roots!

    • Charlene Ramlu

      December 15, 2021 at 3:29 pm

@KEMAL C. she had a huge massive nasty medical problem! Which is directly related to weight for women all over the world! She had a surgery, She nearly died! Get a grip. That tumour in fact tainted I’m sure most her life until it was removed because of hormones, I’m sure you can imagine if someone had something that huge growing in their uterus that, that would have caused some inconveniences along the way lol. Our world doesn’t promote sisterhood and kinship places of safety where we can heal one another, and confide in one another and bring forth knowledge. I hate that through comment you have to get the hurtful stuff and the helpful stuff 😣. This Ted Talk was great I appreciated his premise. I wonder is there an actual pharmaceutical form of what he was talking about toward the end?

    • Tegan Crutchfield

      December 15, 2021 at 8:32 pm

@Angela Bilyeu That is precisely why I mentioned that disease, STRESS, TRAUMA, AND OUTSIDE FACTORS all contribute to obesity. Please don’t tell me where to look. I’ve studied this for years because I’ve seen people without a preexisting condition deal with this and feel like outcasts. Depression , trauma, and stress which can often lead to emotional eating are factors. People don’t realize that sometimes food is used just like drugs or alcohol to tap the pleasure centers within the brain.

    • Tegan Crutchfield

      December 15, 2021 at 8:33 pm

@Charlene Ramlu Thank you so much for being so kind and understanding Charlene!

@Tegan Crutchfield I’m sorry. I also have studied this for years, but I haven’t studied YouTube at all. This comment ended up in the wrong place. I meant it for the speaker. I found your story inspiring. Thank you for sharing it.

365 lbs says – High fructose corn syrup. Sugar everywhere all the time. Coke, Pepsi, Oh my god, so inside me is a skinny rat clawing to get out? This is so creepy. I can feel it. Let’s face it. I’m fat because I’m a lazy piece of crap that finally got tired of running 5 miles a day and lifting weights 2 hours a day, and I drink 3 cokes per day, and at least a quart of milk, every day. Donuts twice a week. Sausage rolls for breakfast, hamburger and fries for lunch, pizza for dinner. Surprise! I’m fat as a grizzly bear going into hibernation. Glad you are workin on a cure. PS why are so many retired Marines fat as ticks?

  25. Paul Brooks

Throughout history we were underfed and nutrient deficient. We were the fat rats in a very scarce environment—but we didn’t and couldn’t know how our genes would express based on how life was. It wasn’t until our environment changed drastically that we were able to see the genes express themselves.

  26. David Van de Voorde

    December 15, 2021 at 7:49 am

This guy is just coming up with excuses for his own obesity. Genetic defects are very rare. The POMC deficiency? 50 cases described ever!
Yes, different people react differently to food. Yes, a lot of hormones play a role. But for 99% of the overweight people, what and when we eat is the root cause.
