The only reason why Apple has old MacBook design with M2 which is similar to Air M2 is business strategy.

Well, i own M1 MBP. IMO, Apple makes us as users happy because we feel our device aren’t outdated yet. So… i’m not gonna upgrade to M2 ’till new chip release in a next few years. M3 TBH with 3nm 😀

      June 22, 2022 at 1:48 pm

You probably don’t even need the M3. Apple supports it’s products for years so that M1 MacBook of yours will still be fast in 5/6 maybe even 7 year.

@ONEWAYLEEWAY Agree… Regarding device age, i hope so. But we never know how long our device last. Considering possibility of defect at some devices.

I love how every time Apple do a redesign on any product(something that should be standard over time) they have the balls to charge the customer extra for it. Thinner bezels and a notch on i Phone X…an extra $300, touch bar on mac pro…$300, a new bigger screen for the mac pro 14…new price $1800(instead of $1300), i Pad Pro has thinner bezels now…$250 extra. Madness when you think about it…

      June 22, 2022 at 2:27 pm

The main reason is that TSMC have put their prices up, this was well advertised and hard to ignore as inflation is everywhere! I heard it is about $100 extra for the A16 and maybe more for the M2, so the consumers have to pay for supply price increases and just look at the Intel 12th gen, even with much higher competition they have escalating prices. I think you are being unreasonable there as Apple costs R&D over the life cycle of a design so cost per unit is not that high. It is sadly just the world we live in now with inflationary pressures that will get worse before they get better.

    • ONEWAYLEEWAY

      June 22, 2022 at 3:25 pm

@andyH_England In 2017 the i Phone X was $250/$300 more expensive then the previous i phone just because it had smaller bezels and a notch. Inflation was no where near as bad as it is today(because the world wasn’t falling apart) and they STILL charged us extra. Sound familiar? It should because they’re doing it again with the Macbook Air…Same smaller bezels, notch and $200/£250 more expensive.

    • andyH_England

      June 22, 2022 at 3:37 pm

@ONEWAYLEEWAY There was a $200 difference between the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X and the X has more expensive OLED and the very expensive (at the time) front Face-ID camera tech. Though I am not saying they are worth the extra $200 there was other stuff as well including a co-processor on the X for a Secure Enclave, also dual optical stabilization on rear cameras on iPhone X. So for me saying Apple ramped up the price just because of a new design is way too simplistic and not really true.

    • ONEWAYLEEWAY

      June 22, 2022 at 11:15 pm

@andyH_England “Apple launched the iPhone 8 in 2017 at a retail price of $699 for 64GB” and the i Phone X was $999. Now my maths isn’t that great but I’m pretty sure thats a $300 difference. And OLED isn’t an excuse either because even cheaper flagships had OLED at the time so they had to introduce it as part of the redesign to catch up to the competition. Face id is impressive but is it worth the $300 upgrade over touch id? Don’t get fooled they’re charging you for a redesign…

    • andyH_England

      June 22, 2022 at 2:35 pm

Who? CPU per core year-on-year growth on any platform is rarely much more than 10% as we reach limits of 5nm.

    • chidorirasenganz

      June 22, 2022 at 3:55 pm

@andyH_England I mean it’s like 10-12% making it higher than any of the m1 macs and better than any standard winbox

    • Adrian Anzano

      June 22, 2022 at 6:31 pm

yes, it’s better than the Pro in fact.

    • Gabriel Gledhill

      June 22, 2022 at 6:32 pm

It is, certainly. There are two definite advantages, the fan and perhaps a superior battery life, and the difference it makes has been shown to be negligible. Everything else is preference, and it is difficult to conceive of what person would prefer the M2 MacBook Pro.

The basic M2 MB Air only has binned 8-core GPU so it will perform significantly below the MB Pro 13 in heavy GPU workloads, the Pro about 25% more grunt. So you need to upgrade to the 10-core GPU for $100 making them the same price, but it is misleading to say the bas eM2 Air will perform close even disregarding the active cooling which can make a big difference in warmer ambient temperatures.

So you think the 10 core mb air will have solid performance with heavy gpu workloads? I want to get one but I do game sometimes and wondered if it could handle that

    • chidorirasenganz

      June 22, 2022 at 3:58 pm

I was with you until you said there will be a big difference between the 10 core in the mbp and mba. Unless you are rendering something for more than 10min or something else extensive over time you won’t tell any difference. Even when the mba throttles it’s only a 6% difference

The new M2 air and m1 pro 14/16 new design is a let down… this 13 inch m2 and m1 air is the last wedge design series… built quality has dropped with the new chassis and design adoption. The new design has hollow feel, heavier monitor enclosure and weaker hinges (to support new air cooling option)..

def get the MacBook Pro from 2015 if you need a reliable machine and still fast to this date but if your willing to spend a little more i’d get a M1 Macbook Air.

Spend more on the m1. The 2014 MacBook Pro is no longer supported, and the 2017 MacBook pros are known as some of the worst MacBooks out there, m1 would last you way longer.

    • Zachary Allen

      June 22, 2022 at 6:10 pm

2014 isn’t supported and the 2017 was horrible. If you don’t have money to buy an m1 or m2 just wait it out

I don’t think it really makes sense. Apple’s notebook lineup should be: 13” MacBook Air, (possible 15” MacBook Air), 14” and 16” MacBook Pros.

Good on Apple for keeping it. What you can’t do, if you care about your customers, is say to professionals “ hey, you can’t have what you could before, only something slightly worse. But not too much worse, you’ll be fine”. Professionals can get uncomfortable about the lack of the fan for heavier workloads, and that’s enough reason. And anyway, a company should never downgrade the experience of the users just because there is new cool stuff, only upgrade it. Even if it won’t be a success it must be in the lineup.

I dont like the M2 lineup as apple released it. It feels like they should have a left the MacBook Air alone, just leave the M1 can call it a day. The M2 MacBook Air should have been released as the M2 MacBook Pro (add a fan or whatever). Be done with it at that.

I have the intel base model 2020 magic keyboard right before the M1 MacBook pro 13 inch I love it fast and quick only hate the battery life I would gladly take the M2 model I love this design and the touch bar is amazing to me it works well and it does exactly what I need it to do I cannot wait until it’s released definitely well worth it at $1200 I keep hearing M1 battery life is fantastic I can only imagine M2

@Felix Five and that’s why they have the MacBook Air the new one for folks like your self you get the same design good power at a very reasonable price but it’s a lot of folks behind the scenes that like the Touch Bar and this design and computer idk why people hate it so much or what they do expect it to do it does what it need to do or what it was intended for it to do

the answer for this product is simple. it’s macbook gov/mil/edu. it’s not for the consumers. in order to meet the RFP requirement, the product needs to be publicly available. also needs to be new enough to last yet old enough so it’s easy/cheap to maintain. think about the global gov/mil/edu balk purchase. aapl is making the right decision.
