We really do need to take gender out of the discussion on these kinds of topics. Any suggestion that something that improved is because of women, is quite frankly a back handed insult, bordering on being passive aggressive against men, and it’s just so unnecessary.
From personal experience having worked with both genders in the military and other organisations, over the last 26 years, when we quite rightly ignore gender, it makes for a far better and more productive team and a better work environment for there to be a mix.
There was a period I was extensively involved in media ops, and had dealings with the likes of BBC, Sky News, Reuters, Associated Press and many more. I clearly remember that the team head of the Sky News team was female, the reporter was male.

What fragile ego you have for taking this as an insult when her point is to educate the audience on the existence and impact of female workers in war reporting.

    • @SeanHendy

      November 29, 2023 at 8:20 am

@@Toopalaylay sad that you completely missed my point. Why is it about women? She admits herself early in her presentation that men vs women has been debated for a long time, so why continue it? Why not just focus on the impact and importance of war correspondents regardless of gender?

Is there any reason why we should be surprised that women are as least as effective as men as war reporters? in which case what message is this talk trying to get across?

    • @SeanHendy

      November 29, 2023 at 8:21 am

Exactly my thoughts. Gender has nothing to do with it. The competence of the person is what makes an impact. Their gender shouldn’t be an issue.

@@austindenotter19 why do you feel the need to comment like that rather than engage in a constructive debate? Surely you’re more intelligent than that. There’s nothing wrong with having an opinion, but accusing someone for being wrong for having an opinion, is really poor.

Bright lights, camera looks like a weapon system, might be wearing bright colors, plus standing out in the open so they’re an easy target (or exposed on a vehicle). Someone might just take a shot at them thinking they’re someone else.

12:13 “…that harnesses our unique perspective and our own unique strengths. Now many of the things we may have feared in the past would be held against us; our compassion, our empathy, and our focus on civilian lives have become our greatest strengths.”

Am I understanding correctly that she’s saying that compassion, empathy, and focus on civilians are uniquely female strengths?

Continuing to push these narratives of “look how well this one gender is doing this one thing” perpetuates this feeling of division and encourages the “us vs them” mentality that is so incredibly prevalent today.

I find myself thinking; “Yes *obviously* women can be sensational war correspondence journalists, why on earth do we need a TED talk about that?”. Maybe I’m just really entrenched in my Western feminist mentality and some parts of the world will really appreciate this talk, but to me talking about compassion and empathy as uniquely female strengths feels like going backward more than forwards.

These *people* risking their lives to show the world the brutal realities of what is going on in these parts of the world are heroes in their field. That should be the focus, not their genitals.

    December 1, 2023 at 4:38 am

Honestly, if she focused on the topic like the title is stating it, the TED talk would be far better. I feel like she has the need to prove herself as a woman in the field to the audience over and over again, its just unjustified that this is a gender debate again. It would have been way more interesting to hear about your life as war reporters in general, no matter if male or female. Like the shower situation, living conditions, fearing death, smuggling, accomplishments and such. Instead, she only scratches the surface to those very relevant aspects and makes it all about gender. „Look how awesome war reporting is because we women exist there!“. Feels a bit outdated and by BEING a woman holding the TED talk, she automatically draws attention to that there, in fact, are also female war reporters.
