How can the lessons of the past help us navigate the turbulence of the present and future? Social philosopher Roman Krznaric explores why history isn’t just a record of what’s gone wrong — it’s also full of solutions, resilience and radical hope. From Edo Japan’s circular economy to the peaceful coexistence of cultures in medieval Spain, he reveals why looking backward can actually help us move forward. (Recorded at TED Countdown: Overcoming Dilemmas in the Green Transition on October 30, 2024)

Roman Krznaric explores how history can guide us through current crises, offering examples from Edo Japan’s circular economy, medieval Spain’s cultural coexistence, and the abolition movement to show how past solutions can inspire hope and action for a sustainable future.

Imagine what we thought we knew and found out we were told lies about, and not question the validity of who really benefits from the lessons that we’re spouse to learn from that history

Yes, like all the lies about the abolition of slavery in the US… It takes work to find the truth.

What we learn from history is that we do not learn from history. Just look at the election of Trump… it paralleles Hitler quite closely.

Japanese history too. It is filled with their triumph and suffer from war. Not with their victims, terrible war crimes.

The French Revolution example seems to be the way to go. The oligarchs constantly sacrifice and enslave commoners, reaping the world. Solutions that infringe on profits and upset the owner class are thwarted by nepotism.

So he urges to rovolt because gradualism is slow? Did he study the ratio between successed active desruptions and those who were brutally crashed or had no effective development?

  17. @bryannorris8049

    March 18, 2025 at 12:43 pm

Imagine thinking an issue was so destructive to the planet that it is fine to disrupt society and to destroy cultural treasures to stop the gradualism, but you’ll destroy an ally in reaching the goal if you think he is on the wrong side politically even if it pushes back the timeline. The political activism against Musk overriding the contributions of his investments in a lower carbon future convinced me that nobody takes climate change seriously and that I shouldn’t prioritize it either.

This is why we need to question everyone and everything. Curiosity is very important! We learn, we adapt, we overcome (and repeat ♻️). You may share your findings with others but never oblige them to your findings

I love the question. If I could travel back in time, where would I travel to?
    Genius. Seriously.
Because the past can be re-created for good and also for bad.
So the next question should be.
Where would I NOT travel to…

OMG! a historical stupidity the myth of peaceful life in Muslim invasion in fact the term praceful is FAKE and antagonic with military invasion clearly ; for the reason the Muslim invasion in Spain the historically word for defintion of this historic episode of term INVASION military principally no quantitative by the way is “pescefull ” the Russian invasion in Ukraine? great stupidity ; Christian slavery in Spain and only the rulers Muslims were the privilege charges in all oficiall stablisments etc… the Christian “Reconquista” of Spain is the Re- conquest for the autochtonous people of invaded territory..
