Some really strange answers. I wonder if you gave the same questions to another player what they would say.

My all time favorite player to watch. I loved tennis in the 70’s, when you had such idiosyncratic players as Mac, Borg, Connors, Lendl. Borg and Lendl’s style pretty much won out, because nobody can play like John or Jimmy.

You don’t have to approve of it, and we certainly don’t have to agree with him… BUT you GOTTA respect John McEnroe’s spirit and his passion for the game. He says it like it is, on and off the court, and… well… I’d argue his occasional tirades were EXACTLY what put butts in seats in the day… just as much as his skills and talents. ;o)

For McEnroe he was one of the very few players that could get angry or throw a fit and still be able to win the game. The thing is once you lose or start losing in tennis you aren’t thinking clearly so obviously you are going to make more mistakes. John was the exception to that he sometimes even played better when he was angry.

    • KaptainKreeper

      September 5, 2022 at 2:55 pm

Because not only do they not fly as fast, but not every part of the ball dies equally. Some parts you can hit as hard as you want and get nothing off of it, others will send the ball flying. That and at the highest level balls will deform slightly too

Is he not watching much tennis? Plenty of current players that throw tantrums, not just Kyrgios, Dimitrov and Tsitsipas and Zverev all throw tantrums, Djokovic defaulted a match 2 years ago for hitting a lineswoman, and that’s not even mentioning multiple Serena Williams outbursts, doesn’t mean they don’t still win

6:45 – Racquets can be restrung that quickly? I don’t play tennis, but it seems like a whole thing. Not just getting the string (cord? It’s “restrung” so it’s got to be “string” right?) through the holes and woven but also getting the tension right. Isn’t that kind of a lot?

Point of order, if I may: I think women who play tennis prefer to be called women, not girls. Not trying to speak on anyone’s behalf, as here on YouTube anyone can speak for themselves. But there’s a general linguistic shift in English-speaking regions where “women” is the female equivalent to the male “men” or “guys”, while the word “girls” is narrowing its scope to the age range of what we’d call “boys” on the other side. So it’s not “girls’ tennis” unless the men are cool with “boys’ tennis”.

MOST tennis players are perfectionist and tennis is very bipolar. Ups and downs in each match can make anyone crazy.

Big fan of JM since he came on the scene as a player. I’m a Raider fan and somehow John brought out that me against the world mentality that I identify as a person and Raider fan. Translate that to tennis and I hung on to every point watching John and that started me playing tennis now for 40 years and still going. Old tennis players are now picking up pickle ball because they cannot move as well but I’m still playing tennis in my 60s. Beer has been a great source of reliving my glory days. Pickleball, maybe one day if my partner is attractive. Lol. Love this content for John. One of the greatest to play and THE GOAT in men’s doubles. I’d love to see a pro tennis tournament with only wood racquets allowed. 🎾🎾

The picking ball explanation is wrong actually… you want to pick the ball with the least amount of felt for first serve so that it goes faster through the air, and the ball with the most felt for second serve as those are better for curves. Thought he would know that…

I remember seeing John in his early days. I loved him. When he lost his temper I just wanted to give him a hug. He was such a perfectionist that he held himself and everyone else to a very high standard. And he couldn’t stand it when that standard was not reached.

Seems like the next generation players are trying to maintain Rafa’s manners of not smashing a racket. You see a lot of them trying to do it but stop. But like John said, there’s nothing wrong with showing emotion, smashing or not smashing a racket neither makes you a good guy nor bad guy. Tennis is a mentally demanding and challenging sport, I don’t see anything wrong with showing emotion on court

  149. Alex Somers Lahr

I like you a lot, Johnny Mac. But you just called the women’s side “the girl’s side” (while answering the first question). You can’t be serious?! Do not play into the belittling of women by calling them girls. It’s a slip that women hear and contributes to many feeling les than. You would NEVER say “boys” instead of men. So don’t do it to women.

  150. Alex Somers Lahr

Hahaha! John is great! If you don’t have time to watch the whole video, at least watch this take….it’s hilarious 5:16 . The last part about “you just hit the ball in the bottom of the net” had me rolling 5:43! 😂

I would like to ask him two questions: are you disgusted with the current state of American tennis. Two, you played a lot of Davis cCp and Doubles: if you had single handedly focused on your Singles career…could you have won more Titles, and did that loss to Lendl at the French destroy you as a human being, which also denied you a Grand Slam on Clay….lastly like Agassi who got distracted with Brooke and the glamourous life did Tatum ruin you?

  159. TennisCoachChip

    September 10, 2022 at 11:09 pm

4:00 I would put racket and string technology ahead of the improvements in the surfaces. Players can hit the ball so hard with so much spin now that it makes it very difficult to volley.

  160. KL

    September 11, 2022 at 5:20 am

I get it. I only ever really competed in track and field, but there were still plenty of moments where I would’ve smashed a tennis racket into the ground if one were available.
