Talking about romance in game, my best friend just gave me my Christmas present today, and it’s a framed print of some art that she comissioned of my character and her girlfriend dancing together. It was so sweet that I started to cry when I opened it. I’m so invested in these adventurers lives, and just want them to be happy.

I would argue, to Play, you only need the Players Handbook. But then again, I play Pathfinder and you really do only need a Core Rules book. As a player sine 1979, it’s always been that way 1 book is all you need. Now to DM, you do need those books, and maybe more.
Elf was only a Race and Class in the 1st Edition “Basic” It was never that in the regular or “Advanced”
OH and GREAT Chris Walken voice
Races: Wolfen /Lupin (This was a race in Pallidium) You have cats, why not Wolves. Why not Bear-men
1st Ed, the XP was different between classes, So a wizard took more XP than a Thief/Rogue, etc. In my games, players start off 1 level lower at the XP of the start. But sometimes I start them at the same level at the XP needed to be that level. My view, not everyone is equal in life or the job. You will always have someone more experienced than you, and you may be more experienced than someone else.

You can always attack with your off hand using a bonus action. The combat style allows you to use a one-handed weapon, and the feat to add your hability modifier to damage rolls. So yeah, rogue can always use that to increase the odds of hitting at least once on their turn.

A couple of these answers are just not right… Most likely not Joe’s fault, but the proper answers got edited out. 0:51, no, you don’t need to get any books to learn. Wizards of the coast has a free PDF on their site with the basic rules that is more than enough for you to play your first campaign. Those three books might run you over 130$, a ridiculous investment for something you don’t even know if you are into. The best way to start is to find a group and have someone teach you the ropes. 6:46 With daggers ni both hands, any character can attack at least once with one hand as their action and use their bonus action to attack with the other hand, but this second attack doesn’t add your dexterity modifier to the damage. The fighting style Joe mentions (which base rogues don’t even have) allows you to add your modifier to that second attack and the feat gives you +1ac, the ability to stow or draw 2 weapons instead of one and to wield 2 weapons that are not light at the same time.

When you take the Attack action and Attack with a light melee weapon that you’re holding in one hand, you can use a Bonus Action to Attack with a different light melee weapon that you’re holding in the other hand. You don’t add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus Attack, unless that modifier is negative.
If either weapon has the Thrown property, you can throw the weapon, instead of making a melee Attack with it.
A rogue can do this, and take the Fighting Style/Feat to add their ability modifier to it, but they can do the second attack with a dagger regardless.

dnd is a roleplaying game where the dm writes a story and you live the story. You can do whatever you want with that story; Cause chaos, spread good, etc. but you still have to follow the story the dm tells.

6:40. I am surprised Joe got this basic thing wrong. Yes rogues can attack twice if they have dagger in each hand, but not per one action. Literally anyone can do two attacks per turn since level 1. All it takes is to have a light weapon in each hand. Then you can attack once as an action and once as a bonus action. The fighting style or feat doesn’t help with the amount of attacks or doesn’t allow rogues attacking twice per action at all.

6:40 anyone wielding two light weapons can make use of two weapon fighting, i.e. a bonus action attack after taking the attack action. the fighting style allows you to add the normal modifiers to the dmg of the bonus action attack. the feat allows you to use two weapon fighting while using non-light one handed weapons.

December 14, 2020 at 12:18 am
thats an easy answer any decent D&D player would know, that has played an evil campaign. the answer is Neutral Evil, because that player isnt forced into any kind of decision, which means the DM can never fully plan around that players decisions, also that player might choose to “balance” his fellow players, should they become too lawful/chaotic/evil. because they are slaves to their alignment, NE is master of his own.

Not quite right on the two weapon fighting rules. The rules are that any character can wield two light, melee weapons and use their bonus action to attack, IF they first attack with their main hand weapon. The character doesn’t get to add their damage bonus to the offhand weapon damage, just the dice damage. The two weapon fighting style and feat allow you to add that damage bonus and the feat also allows you to dual wield two weapons that aren’t light.

December 14, 2020 at 1:18 am
Correction: what was asked exactly, yes. A rogue can attack with a 2nd dagger but it only does 1d4 damage. The first attack gets your sneak attack added and your modifier (str or dex your choice).

December 14, 2020 at 9:36 pm
Regarding the Rogue with daggers questions: Two-weapon Fighting is something everyone has. If you’re wielding two light weapons, you can attack with one as an action, and then with the other as a bonus, but you don’t add your ability modifier for the bonus attack. The fighting style allows you to add the ability modifier, while the feat allows you to dual wield weapons that aren’t light, among other bonuses.

Note on the two weapon fighting that is asked about at 6:35. Rules as Written, when you use your action to make an attack with a light weapon, which a dagger is, and you can find more in the weapon section in the Player’s Handbook, you may then use your bonus action to make an attack with a light weapon that is being held in your other hand. When you make this bonus action attack, it does not add your damage modifier to the roll.
To shorten this, you can use your action to attack with a dagger, you roll your damage, add your dex mod, then you can use your bonus action to attack, you roll your damage, but you do not add your dex mod to this second attack.
Reasons why you don’t add damage to your second one is two parts.
First, this is your off hand. A right-handed person is not very skilled with their left-hand so that’s one reason why you do not add damage to the second swing. There are ways in the game to get skilled in fighting with two hands and thus allow you to add your dex mod to your second attack. Easiest way is to take the Two Weapon Fighting fighting style. This can be gotten by either taking a class that gives the fighting style or by taking a feat that gives the fighting style.
Second is because of how the math works out in the game. A short sword is another one of these light weapons that you can use your bonus action to attack with and these deal a d6 of damage. If you make two attacks in a turn and you do not have the Two Weapon Fighting fighting style, you deal 2d6 plus your dex mod. A greatsword deals 2d6 plus your str mod. So the math works out well. Daggers deal less damage because you can also throw them.
Kyle Weir
December 14, 2020 at 10:46 pm
Incorrect on the rogue with 2 daggers. Daggers have the “light” property, therefore when you are holding a dagger in your off hand and make an attack with a weapon in your main hand, you can use a bonus action to make an attack with the “light” weapon. You do not get go add your relevant modifier to the damage roll without the “two weapon fighting” fighting style or the “dual wielder” feat

Just a point about the two attacks using dagger thing. In 5e at least, every weapon with a light property can be used to attack twice. So you can dual wield a dagger or a short sword. But, when you do that, you don’t add the damage bonus to the second attack. For example your dex is +3 so your dagger’s damage is 1d4+3, you can attack twice, but the first attack is 1d4+3, while the second attack is only 1d4, so total of 2d4+3. However if you have the feat or the fighting style, then you’re able to add your damage bonus to both attacks, so first attack is 1d4+3, second attack is 1d4+3, for a total of 2d4+6.
At least that’s how I’m playing it anyway.

For dealing with players that simply resort to torturing a prisoner for all their information or to do what they want, you kind of have to also keep in mind what class and Alignment the players are. A lawful good cleric is not going to allow his party members to needlessly torture an unarmed prisoner under his protection. Acts that go against somebody’s faith could risk penalty by that characters God.

The last dnd session I played in ended in one of the players who wanted to retire his character betraying the group, another player joined him and I later find out he was only pretending to join the enemy so he could kill em later, but forgot to do nonlethal damage and ended up dying with the original traitor

Sorry bro but your advice on the two attacks is wrong, you can wield two light melee weapons and attack with both on your turn using your bonus action for the second attack but you don’t add your ability modifier bonus to the damage of the second attack.

I put together what I felt was a wonderful open to a campaign for a group I DM’d. I told them during Session 0 that the premise was that a reclusive aristocratic family had announced they would be holding a banquet at their mansion – this mansion was massive, standing atop a heavily forested hill overlooking the bluffs to the sea below – and that nobles, merchants, and even the common folk were flocking to see what secrets the mansion and it’s enigmatic family held. So their character could be a noble seeking an audience, a merchant looking to establish trade, a thief looking to see what they could score, a bodyguard for someone else attending, a commoner seeking employment, etc. They just had to be something that fit the setting in some way.
Once they’d arrived, as the banquet went on, some of those attending would quietly disappear. Not in large groups, or in quick succession. An hour would pass and one or two people would be missing. Another hour and another couple of individuals would be missing. Eventually the players would catch on, either because someone they had come with was among the missing, or they’d notice the lack of people, maybe they had snuck out of the banquet hall and noticed someone else had done the same but they had turned a corner and vanished. It became a mystery.

I feel like the player dies and creates a new character at level 1 would be interesting if there was a lone survivor. You would have this party of level 1’s with a higher level character acting like a Gandalf for the hobbits. Would make for some interesting story and roleplaying.

I hate to rules lawyer you Joe but the two weapon fighting rules found on page 195 of the PHB can be used by any character of any class. The fighting style allows you to add the damage modifier to the roll. The feat gives you a +1 to ac, and ignores the light property of the weapons you can use while engaging in two weapon fighting. Taking the feat dose not give you the fighting style!!
So the answer to that persons question is yes, the rouge can attack twice if they use a dagger or light weapon in each hand. But the second attack is a bonus action and they do not add there DEX mod to the damage roll of the second attack.

My favorite start of a campaign was nothing grandiose, we were starting as lvl 3 characters, so our party was getting back to town after completing some bounty, and there was a festival happening at the same time. Nothing of significance happened towards advancing the story, but it was a great way to have everyone show their characters’ personality, some went to the church’s garden so they could relax in a more quiet place, some participated in a drinking contest, and one character joined a wrestling tournment where he got the nickname Peter the Rock that stuck the whole campaign

Much respect. A lot of people disregard the Dragonlance world. I really enjoyed all the Tracy Hickman & Margaret Weis books. I think they are some of the best. I would say my favorite out of all the Dragonlance novels would have to be the Legends Trilogy. But you could never go wrong with the Chronicles. Those need to be made into a movie. Also, the Meetings Sextets 6 book saga really puts some depth into the Companions.

As a long time Athas / Dark Sun DM: Choose which “lore Version” you prefer, bc there are huge differnces between DS, revised and 4th Edition lore. I myself love to start my campaigns with the death of Kalak (and the rest of the Sorcerer Kings still alive) bc it leads to interesting tension and stories imho.

7:15-9:35 Similar to this scenario, I was in a party that walked into a city of ghouls at night and took it upon myself to purge the city. At dawn, the ghoul bodies had turned into human bodies, and the dm told us the high king had made a deal with a mage to make his family immortal like him. The mage was a necromancer and cursed the family and the town. I was chaotic evil

Btw, who else when the question about the more dangerous between Chaotic Evil and Lawful Evil came up thought immediately “Lawful Good is much more dangerous, especially when the rest of the party is not” (How many times parties were screwed by having Lawful Good Paladins or Fighters with them denying them the advantage of surprising the enemy). Btw, the seagull should have totally been named Steven.

Hold on… can’t rogues still get the second attack even without the feat/fighting style so long as they hold a light weapon in each hand?
The second attack would require a bonus action and not get added damage normally, but it’s still possible for any character capable of using two light weapons.

So in the first game I was running, I crit killed one of the PCs with a goblin at 0 HP. 3 nat 20s in a row. They were second level, I believe. This was in 3e.
I also saw a friend of mine, same player as above, actually, roll 15 consecutive ones, didn’t matter the die, or die type. Attacks, skill checks, damage rolls, saves. Yea, dice didn’t like him.

Chaotic evil vs “chaotic stupid” – had a chaotic evil character go on an entire quest to uproot the criminal underworld of a city- essentially cleaning house and achieving a relatively peaceful state in what used to be an extremely corrupt city- all because he thought the taxes were annoying and wanted to ruin the lives of the government officials- he didn’t care that good things happened- he just wanted to cause as much pain and annoyance to the dude that lead to him being taxed

I’d suggest the easiest way to get into D&D (or RPGs in general) is to look for an existing group in your area (check local game, book, & card shops). Ask to sit in on a session or two (try not to disrupt), then ask if you can join (ask after a session, rather than during, and be prepared to do some homework). Having experienced players & GMs to talk to & ask questions of can be very helpful (be mindful, however, that there are those in the RPG community, as in any other, who are just out to ruin the game for everyone or who will try to take advantage of you).

one of my favorite ways to start a campaign is to have a gargantua or the Tarrasque come ripping thru their village . my big campaign that had gone on for around 10 years off and on started with all good races pushed into one last city as evil conquered the realm. The evil forces couldn’t get past the main gods protection enchantment so they cut off the city with a massive crevice around the city and a magic forest of giant spiders.
