What if you could eat chicken nuggets without harming a chicken? It’s possible through “cellular agriculture,” says Isha Datar. In a talk about cutting-edge science, she explains how this new means of food production makes it possible to eat meat without the negative consequences of industrial farming — and how it could fundamentally change our food systems for the better. “It’s our once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get a second chance at agriculture,” she says.

tempting. yet completely avoiding the central problems. i am pretty sure the capitalist patriarchy will find myriads of ways to make the life of billions of beings even worse using this technology.

we so called “civlized” people could also realize how completely crazy it is to capture, forcefeed, protect, slaughter and eat an animal.
eating a vegan diet off of permaculture and synthropic farming would be much easier. and bio-engineering can supply vitamin b12.

The moral value of this should be sustainable somehow also lest the anti cause rear it’s ugly head again. Blind faith will cause problems with cloning techniques. Just don’t tell them what it’s made of and there will be no problem. It’s kinda like calling a quantum computer a better computer but it has nothing to do with quantum mechanics. So, if you’re gonna sell cloning protein for human consumption you’d better hide it under another old label that’s already been accepted and trusted maybe.

  29. papercutsyn

    October 23, 2021 at 2:43 pm

Her presentation is nothing than a lobby presentation of the new food industry and private investors.
A few things to point out:
She points out that subsidising food, meat prodiction, is bad, which is made by the democratically voted governments.
She wishes for a protection of “PI’s”, which are Private Investors. In other words, if their project fails, the public has to pay for their losses.

I agree that it would be good to have that kind of “food” but who owns the patents, how much power would those entities have if they would control the protein food supply? Just look at Monsanto what they are doing with their cropsseeds in north and south america.

It’s really interesting and good idea. But I ‘m concerned about the industries and highly qualified laboratories that need to be set up and maintained in order to achieve this. A small about of contamination would turn out to be a futile one.

Stop this argument and if you think animals are being harmed, open a zoo and buy all of them, MEANWHILE BARBEQUE SUNDAY GOES ON, THERE WILL BE LOTS OF MEAT NOT GROWN IN A LAB OR A PETRI DISH

Let’s not. There’s nothing wrong with killing animals to eat them. That’s how most animals survive, the bigger ones eat the smaller ones. Not to mention that there’s plenty of animals who would gladly eat us if given the chance. And there’s tons of pests and diseases that make our life harder. Nature isn’t this perfect, peaceful, pure entity that green voters make it out to be. If I have to live on this planet that is constantly trying to kill us with natural disasters, coronaviruses etc., then I’m at least gonna have my bacon and eat it.

The 7.9 billion people in the world need cellular agriculture, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and food logistics. Of that population, 9.1 million die every year from hunger, while 1.6 billion tons of food are wasted every year; food waste is an ethical, environmental, and economic problem we have to solve pronto. 💕 ☮ 🌎 🌌

I’m a big fan of this idea in theory, I’m glad she pointed out how incredibly hard it will be to pull off though. There are so many problems to overcome: You need to keep the bio-facilities ultra clean and it has proved nearly impossible to make such facilities without incredibly high cost. We need lots of these facilities and they need to be large, but don’t have enough companies that even know how to make them and none that have made them to a large scale. We need so many more bioreactors, and growing something of decent size requires moving from small to progressively larger reactors multiple times – not so efficient and each move introduces the possibility of contamination. Many batches will have to be thrown out when contamination occurs, and it already occurs quite often in the small-scale production currently going on.

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY SUPPORT the idea of cell agriculture IF we can find a major breakthrough or two that makes it a little easier, but the hurdles I mentioned are immense. Maybe some kind of bioreactor redesign that doesn’t require multiple, progressively larger reactors or something. I’m afraid those chicken nuggets shown early in the video are about as good as the industry can do for many years to come.

The question is, is this method can be commercially widely applied?, will it be that be less costly and takes equal amount of resource, time to produce? These questions not mine but companies who rules meat sector. They will surely think of shortcoming profit not cows and greenhouse.

  89. Joyce Ann Solario

    October 27, 2021 at 12:23 pm

Scary personally I think there can also be side effects of eating mutated cells. Scientist has always created stuff that had problems in the long run. Growing your own food, and having your own farm can be more sustainable for small countries. Commercialism, Factories, and Capitalism is the problem and governments should stop giving more permits for more factories that causes major problems. But hey I am probably eating so many cell cultured stuff that I do not know of.

    October 27, 2021 at 10:04 pm

Anybody thought about how much lower quality this kind of meat would be, due to oversimplified “nutrients” and cell types that the business will use? Its a dangerous idea to basically manufacture food out of chemical soup. Why? Because for profit companies are optimized for that, profit. That means the cheapest possible solution that does the “trick”. And we all know that regulation is non existent or not effective. Imagine if you got health issues or food poisoning every time you bought cheapo / fake product on Amazon! Look at what the artificial baby formula is compared to real mothers milk. One has 10 000 + components, the other 100 (maybe less). Why? Even if (BIG if) the manufacturers had the knowledge to do it properly. Would you be able to buy 20000$ baby formula? Its like saying that Coca Cola is the same as apple juice. Its never going to be.

    • Boris Hamanov

      October 27, 2021 at 10:14 pm

And btw, going from hunting and gathering to farming increased abundance, but drastically reduced food variety and nutrient quality for our ancestors. This is known science. It took them a while to adapt. Like a couple dozen centuries or more. I am certainly not looking forward to the next stage of this “evolution”.
