America still has a modicum of liberty and we place a higher priority on innovation. So no, that won’t happen here. Unbelievable how people simply allow themselves to be governed like this. So much for allowing for innovation.

This is great news! We need universal chargers, that way there will be less problems with wires and in the case that some emergency situation happens where you lose your charger you can easily find a replacement!

Apple needs to stop pushing people onto iCloud, and open up full data transfer bandwidth over the cable. usb 2.0 in 2022 is a joke. Some people don’t want iCloud and/or don’t have good enough internet to get much use. When you migrate android phones you can plug the usb c cords between the phones! It’s sad that iPhones can’t do it

I wonder when this will end up being a negative? Like when there’s the eventual progression from usb-c will there be disagreement on what to move to? Will it lead to stagnation in charging port standards since everyone has to be the same?

Apple doesn’t care about the convenience of the consumer, but rather how to milk them instead. Not switching to USB-C was just another way to keep their customers locked into their iPhone prisons. Especially with the fast charging technology that has been out for so long for Android and other devices it’s obvious.

It’s an excellent idea…apple is just greedy…they just love milking consumers with any means necessary…that’s why they are finding it so hard to let go of the lighting cables

  36. Gary Just Gary

I still use an Apple iPhone 8+. The main reason I haven’t upgraded is because of the charging port. Once they do, I’ll buy immediately. I hate the lightning port. It always breaks on my phones & I’m forced to upgrade or use a pad charger.

    • Tom Karches

      June 24, 2022 at 3:16 pm

I bought my 8+ when it came out and the Lightning port has never broken. Are you talking about the Lightning cables?

    • Ryan Anthony

      June 24, 2022 at 3:52 pm

@Tom Karches No, it’s the port. No cable works with it. My phone won’t even charge with one anymore. Have to use the touch pad charger. It’s frustrating.

    • Tom Karches

      June 24, 2022 at 6:50 pm

I was surprised to find out 4 out of 5 of my laptops could charge via USB C. 2 of them have regular power bricks with circular laptop connectors while the other 2 ( m1 MacBook Air ) charges only by USB C but can change via my cellphone charger slowly so USB C is the way to go.

    • Will Bar

      June 22, 2022 at 9:38 pm

I find USB-C unreliable compared to the superior Apple proprietary format.
I’ve had more USB-C issues than any other type of cable combined. Might be the price of universal compatibility.
    Terrible change..

  51. Christopher Loughrey

    June 23, 2022 at 1:53 am

IPhone users wouldn’t have issues with tut move as they already use it with their iPad and Macbook so it would allow them to use their existing iPad cable and have less cables to carry around. It would be a lot different than removing the headphone Jack add Apple users are already using the standard in every other Apple device and would be compatible with their existing 20w iPhone charger so they wouldn’t have to buy a new charger

  52. blackcoffee T

  54. Ambiguous

    June 23, 2022 at 2:12 pm

From the start I want to say the thunderbolt connection is way better designed. All USB-c devices should change their designs to look like thunderbolt connection design. And further more if it’s a pride move then drop it people, when we take world wide decisions we do it in the best way to respect health and upgrade it’s quality. I’m fairly new in the Apple world, I started with one device but all I can really say relevant on the topic it’s that thunderbolt is the better design. If this world politics intend to take all the bad decisions regarding general population with concerns only of they’re own pockets, than I might consider getting rid of all smart devices and anything household alike, I’ll be fine with one single laptop. Naw that’s a real protest we should have for our own good. Pls take this matter serious, don’t rush to think you are saving the environment with usb-c because you are not, just the opposite. You think low health quality damnation is good for all smart devices users. And take in consideration I’ve been having a lot of health problems with usb-c devices and since I started switching to thunderbolt I already resolved most of them. Maybe for scientists is easier to understand but everyone should be well informed and helped with the best informations for their health and they’re life quality.

I wish that was in USA too. I use android phone and airpods which have two different cables. It’s annoying but understand because I think my external battery is also another type of cable.

  62. Jimmy Mcjimmy

    June 24, 2022 at 4:05 pm

This was really stupid on the EU’s part. The usb standard is constantly evolving. And yes, you can manufacture based on one region only, car manufacturers do this regularly. They should’ve recycled the cables instead of locking themselves into a standard managed entirely by American companies under some weird belief that we would stop what we’re doing and conform to their laws. If the standard changes, the world outside will get that cable, and there will be a special old cable just for the EU.

Btw apple is shifting towards wireless charging anyway.

  63. Ibrahim Swiss

I’m a iPhone 13/11/6S/SE current owner and even I say, the Lightning port should have been switched over to USB-C years ago!! I love how the EU is forcing Apple’s hand on this but Apple makes millions on their proprietory lightning connector which is why they don’t want to give it up. Too bad, Apple. USB-C OR DIE!

  72. Ellie Kim

    June 26, 2022 at 3:38 am

That’s so dumb. First off can you even charge a gaming laptop with a type C port effectively? Also during 2025-2028 you’re going to have a ton of MORE waste with any lightning cable and accessories garbage. That’s more waste.

If you look at the law it says must use usb c not wireless charge only. And I have a Asus g14 laptop it can charge by usb c or the standard power cord and my Asus rog phone 5 has two usb c no wireless charging. Now about wireless charging it uses more electricity it charge a phone than wired charging and that is a waste of resources. Put a voltage meter on them and check. Now if you look at GM’s car EV1 it used a padded that plug into the car but it was wrapped in plastic and worked like wireless charging. It was a dead end as it used to much power than wire to battery charger but it was safer. Now look at the demand for electricity and what wireless is doing.
