Apple is seeing what Adobe is doing and wants that. Subscriptions mean, tiny price increases will occur over time – “a frog doesn’t jump out of boiling water ~ if the temperature is increased slowly”. Subscription price increases aren’t because the upkeep needs it, its to make the profit margin in exponential growth vs leveling off. If the profits level off, the stock price comes down, then valuation of the brand comes down. “Year over Year growth” is the CEOs favourite dirty word

Most people sell or trade in their old phones anyway, makes sense on a recyclability level as Apple has robots that can strip the phones down to bare materials to be used again. The phone is just a shell for your data, and that can travel with you from device to device.

It really depends on the price. The phones are good enough to keep for a good 4-5 years now without feeling like you’re missing out. But once I upgrade, I rarely touch my old phone or I’ll often trade it in. So if the price is right I won’t mind paying monthly to get more upgrades.

I change my phone every year and if the lease program would help to create fully transparent electronic waste management system … improve the recycling of materials I would be more then happy to participate … not to mention the benefit of saving some money through such lease program.
Ah in some markets there are already companies which offer you to lease for example high quality photography equipment or even phones… this is no different other then bringing it in-house and having the entire lifecycle of the device under control…. If done responsibly it should be good not only for the company finances but even more so for the environment and so called circular economy.

Sometimes subscriptions make sense. I think for consumption media like music, movies or tv it makes total sense. It’s basically ad free TV and Radio of the modern era.
I don’t even have a problem with the option of renting things. The issue is when there isn’t an option. Renting phones isn’t new. That’s what most carrier services offered/offer.
Personally it’s frustrating that there isn’t an option to pay a one off fee for many software I use for work. My income isn’t the same every month so not sure why software bills need to be. I’m fine paying a couple of thousand bucks for software that brings in money, but I rather pay it off once and then only pay again when I need/want new features

A HUGE ADVANTAGE NOT MENTIONED: doing a phone rental or subscription would be a way for the consumer to decide if they want an iPhone or a Android device without having to totally commit by switching and buying a device and signing a long term contract before using the device on a daily basis, this could be a test drive of other devices for the consumer.
As example: I’m a past Samsung user but now a longtime iPhone user, I would love to rent a new Samsung device to try it out first before totally committing to buying one.
CNET said nothing about this advantage for the consumer ????????

What about the environmental aspect? Let’s assume that the corruption in the supply chain and mining of minerals needed to build these phones isn’t fixed in the short to medium term. It’s in Apple’s best interest (financial and environmental) to take back our used phones and either refurbish to resale or to recycle to recover those rare minerals. Thoughts?

People already financing 36 months on their iphone, so renting might not be a bad option. Just like cars, not majority of people are buying a brand new car outright with 48 months financing (more like 84 month plus) or they just leasing a car due to low monthly payment. Simply put, people are spending above their means and let those manufacturers to take advantages of them easily.

I too am concerned about ownership rights and the way they have trended in the last decade for technology; it’s moving towards the Thanos finger snap of taking everything away. This Apple program is more likely than not to be in that camp.

I would never think about this awful idea: I would rather keep the flagship smartphone for 5 years untill the software updates have finished for life then upgrade to the new flagship smartphone.
Technically, we are in the right to hold onto our smartphones for the next 4-5 years. This is the company’s choice to raise extortionate prices for their smartphones. Buying a topend flagship smartphone for the price of Tv and Fridges is not easy to swollow like water!

Is this on top of paying your cell bill with your carrier? That’s too expensive maybe unless it’s not much more than paying it off with your carrier. I’d like an option of not upgrading, myself with Pixel since I’m not in the Apple ecosystem, and keep the phone for a while until updates aren’t supported anymore though bundled services might be nice to have. What a conundrum.

I traded in my XS Max for a 14 Pro Max. I typically keep my iPhone for 4-5 years before I upgrade. But if Apple made it a good deal, I might do it.
My last android phone was a Galaxy S4 and I don’t plan on switching anytime soon.
Android software changes too much and I don’t want to relearn how to use a phone every year, it’s annoying.
So my answer is maybe, depending on the price.

If you wanna be successful, you must take responsibility for your emotions, not place the blame on others. In addition to making you feel more guilty about your faults, pointing the finger at others will only serve to increase your sense of personal accountability. There’s always a risk in every investment, yet people still invest and succeed. You must look outward if you wanna be successful in life…

The IPhone 14 costs 464 material to make, the carbon cost of a new iPhone is much higher hovering around 8k a new generation of devices on lines are cutting the cycle of the dye to make it affordable. So for me, buying the phone on a lease hold to purchase agreement makes the most sense.
Why would I not be a responsible person and pay the overall societal cost of 8k. My iPhone 12 Pro goes to a new home and I update and cycle to the IPhone 14 pro and upgrade the memory.
Now the new IPhone goes from 12mega pixel to a now a powerful 48 mega pixel camera and ultimately faster experience but also even more personal experience.
Besides I am paying less monthly now with the new phone than the old one, not that it’s old just ready for someone who can take its residual value.

people are doing it everyday and when you stream music, and we are now at the point were it’s the same for apps ( on your devices ), this is all the generation knows. Also bet Lisa is a millennial and has never experienced a subscription free world, as for me I prefer to own as much as possible, I repurpose my previous phone into a standlone music player ( since they killed the ipod, and music is stored locally ( digitally ), the same with movies, if I really really like a movie I now buy it digitally and treat movies on streaming services as recommendations if I don’t want to rent ( digitally ). I’m hardcore Gen X and only use this digital age advantageously, but that’s what you can eliminate e-waste and save money by navigating this digital age wisely. This generation just lacks the experience and thus thinks everything that is feed to them is good but it’s now. Don’t get me started on EVs at this point in development ✌🏾

How is a subscription plan so different from Apple’s existing iPhone Upgrade Program? I’ve been doing it for the last 6 years, and I pay the sales tax on the new iPhone, and then I pay monthly installments (roughly $55 per month) for 12 months, then when the new iPhone comes out, I repeat the process. After receiving the new iPhone, Apple sends me a box to put the old iPhone in, it gets shipped to Apple, and we’re done. I never own the iPhone, however, I get the latest iPhone as soon as the new one is released.

You are right to fear. Apple is trying their best to kill right to repair. And this will discourage users from trying to repair their phone. It will make it harder to leave the walled garden because leaving will mean, not only losing everything in the Apple One plan, but the phone, the photos, the Notes, the shared cloud storage, etc. Apple is trying to be Hotel California. And nothing but laws from the EU will save us from that trend.

We already don’t completely own our phones and this upcoming subscription format has been something manufactures (e.g., John Deere, GM, Samsung and other phone makers, game producers, appliance makers, etc.) have been gradually ideating and conditioning consumers more into assimilating – *and we all **_need_** to fight to NEVER compromise ownership of *our* possessions.* Otherwise, we need to be willing to show backbone enough that we are willing to boycott companies that follow this system. Don’t start fighting back when it’s already become the norm and is too late; affirm our position *now.* Our children are going to suffer the consequences of our own negligence if we allow a system that compels consumers to rent everything while owning nothing comes into fruition. We need to be more vocal in the important places of discourse: their pockets, our own communities, and alternative systems standing against this. If you are impressed by Apple and Google’s multi-trillion-dollar valuations now, wait until they realize (and it looks like they already have) that it’s more lucrative to keep a customer paying over a lifetime than it is to settle for a relatively negligible one-time payment. Streaming is different because content is fluid, not material, and so it’s value behaves very differently than a car or house. You cannot break an episode of Stranger Things, or accidentally lose an entire album of Joe Rogan. So, subscriptions are more reasonable for content-based products. But the ability to access certain basic features of your refrigerator or drive your car however and wherever and whenever you want, regardless of what the manufacturer has to say about it? *That* _has_ to be *your* call, and at zero expense of anything. Subscription to use your car , TV, couch, cooker, watch, home alarm system, doorbell, or phone *should be illegal!*
I’m an American temporarily living in Canada and can tell you right now that a system like that would have no problems being assimilated in this country. Canadians are kind of “nice”/soft (compared to Americans) – won’t deny that – but I find they… Idk. Many seem to just abide top-down overreach and policy without much thought let alone question, and there is a certain naivety in how confident they are about the reality of how their local and federal government is run and especially about the media. And that’s why when I look around here, I don’t really see a people who would under any circustwnce be willing to stand against things like what Apple (and many others) may someday attempt. I will say that Albertans and to an extent many British Columbians seem have a more obvious exception, if only culturally. Slightly more fiery and passionate souls those people especially Albertans. They remind me a bit of Coloradans.

How it works
The $15 price offer is available to customers leasing the iPhone 6 before September 10, provided you trade in your smartphone within 30 days. Even if you don’t upgrade to the soon-to-be-announced iPhone 6s before 2016, you’ll keep the promotional $15 monthly lease price until you decide to change phones, or your lease period ends.
It’s important to remember that a lease plan does not mean you will get to keep your smartphone after your payment period ends. At the end of the 22-month lease, customers can hand back their phone and cancel their contract, continue to lease on a month-by-month basis, trade in their device for a new handset on another leasing plan, or pay the Purchase Option Price and keep their leased phone.

Depends on the price. With all the restrictions already on iPhones, the subscription doesn’t change much in terms of “owning your phone”. It big difference with the sub is it that essentially you are upgrading every year. If the price is good, then it could be worth it. The big picture downside of this sub is it could be that it means that Apple doesn’t have as much need to add more new features to incentivize people to upgrade. But we’ve already gone past the point where new phones don’t really have much new features anyways

My main question would be. What if someone who gets apple iPhone subscription and gets the newest most expensive model and just turns around and sells the iPhone for $2000 that same day ?? How would Apple not allow this from happening. Cause it happens now with people who get contracts for expensive devices and just turn around and sell it while still being on contract.

I kinda think paying a small subscription fee for a device may be a cool idea. Cause think of it like this. You go and get a $2000 device and pay over 2 years to pay it off until contract ends. But by time your contract ends and you want to sell your old device, you’ve lost quite a bit of value from that initial $2000 investment and now can only sell the device for $500-600 so your actually out $1500-1600 after 2 years.
A subscription model if cheap enough may actually save you money in the end from lost value when that device depreciates in value.

I think this may be a good thing for people who habitually swap phones as they come out with new ones, similarly to how some people do with cars. I feel it has messed up the car industry in the sense that cars just don’t last like they used too. I mean in some ways they last long as it’s not unheard of for people getting 300-400k miles out of modern cars not to say they rest of the car is okay at that point when we used to ditch cars at around 100k miles. To me though it seems the car companies want us to replace our cars about every 3-5 years as that is when we more expensive maintenance items start to fail where I feel those type of components would fail in 8-10 years in older less complex vehicles. Maybe I’m off base. Just my observations.
