Apple’s iPhone Duo is out and we want to see how durable it is. So we built a robot to fold it 20,000+ times a day to test its limits. How long do you think it will last? 100,000 folds? 200,000 folds? 500,000 folds? Tune in and watch the testing live. We’ll have CNET’s editors online to answer any of your questions.

TLDW: finished the vid at 61,227 folds and has not failed.
@dancrane2

61,227 / 365 days =167 open/closing per day, assuming 8 hours of sleep, leaves 16-hrs per day or just over open/close 10-times per hour, so far.

Not everyday use. This is best-case scenario, gentle opening and closing with force perfectly applied perpendicular to the hinges. These are going to be a nightmare in the coming months I guarantee it.
@itman9000
October 26, 2026 at 5:27 pm
@Jordan-rb28 lmao if you think people are slamming their $2000 phone closed, you’re a fool.
@loughrey101
October 26, 2026 at 5:44 pm
@Jordan-rb28 if you’re using it as an iPad replacement then you could be opening it 50 times a day
@tanichiro
October 26, 2026 at 6:26 pm
@itman9000 there are people who are doing it.. i’ve already seen lol.. mostly brand new users who’ve never handled other foldables before
@CodedGames
October 26, 2026 at 6:34 pm
@loughrey101 So this video which had 61k folds would be over 3 years of use at 50 times a day

In my opinion, the test is invalid. While it does validate the mechanism, it doesn’t reflect how a real user actually handles the phone. A typical user doesn’t close it that way; they use their fingers, everyone applies a different amount of force, and they often press on different parts of the screen to support it as it closes. In other words, people here are very careful when opening and closing their phones.

What kind of idiot closes their phone at such a slow speed in everyday life?
@데이비드초
October 26, 2026 at 8:39 pm
If you close it so slowly, there is almost no load on the hinge area. If a person closes it with their hand, the impact wave from the closing area acts like a lever and is transmitted to the inner hinge located on the opposite side. The person who designed this is a metacognitive individual, and they are likely a narcissist solely focused on creating a machine that can perform folding operations without error.

How is such a biased and half-baked trick even defensible? You need to run the exact same tests you do for other products. Why double standards only for Apple? Deep down, you guys are just fundamentally biased.

do it like fold 1 not like this
@Kerub_ada
October 26, 2026 at 9:14 pm
That’s incredibly gentle… We need to test it aggressively and toughly.
@Clate63
October 26, 2026 at 9:17 pm
Why so slow and gentle? Testing environments are so different compared to the samsung foldable

This machine is a very gentlemanly one compared to the test machines of the Galaxy Z Fold 1 generation.

It seems the comparison was made using unequal criteria.
