Lol why was this so funny!
It’s like apple trying to reinvent the wheel.

If Apple tries to make something new – bad. If Apple doesn’t – “they don’t innovate anymore”.

iPadOS 16 is seriously making me consider going iPad-free and just getting a touchscreen Mac monitor instead.

Does it mean people buy a full blown monitor cos they wanna use ipad with it?

Why this bizarre halfway house? Why not just have normal resizable windows that work how you expect them to? We’ve had nigh on 40 years of computers behaving a certain way. The iPad is flexible enough to act like an iPad and like a computer depending on what the user wants, there’s no need for this weird compromise.

I want to use the iPad as a laptop. Seems like iPad OS 16 is a step forward in display but no improvement in file management. So still no MacOS-like file management.

Great video! Thanks for zooming into this! Was wondering though… How useable is it in portrait mode on an 11 inch? And when connected to an external display, how does mirroring work/ look?

    • eletroflame

      July 20, 2022 at 6:13 am

I tried portrait mode, same as split view.. everything is stretched vertically, although you can reduce the hight.. but all the apps still display in the middle of the screen, wasting the top and bottom.

Games and apps that force full screen will not rotate at all in portrait mode. So it will look like what you see when you run games on the external monitor.

IF they can allow us to freely move the apps, full screen apps / games can auto rotate and becomes smaller in portrait mode, it would be actually very nice. Play a game at the bottom of the screen, while playing a video on the top.

Lastly, you cannot play 2 videos / audios or games at the same time. One may auto pause once the other one starts. It all depends on the apps and the video.. which is very irritating… making it looks like a poor multitasking.

      July 20, 2022 at 7:12 am

@eletroflame thank you so much for your elaborate reply! When you say all apps display in the middle of the screen, does that mean that they are locked in place in the middle ~ we cannot move them around?

Wished someone made a video showing just how they used stage manager for regular iPad use cases

    • eletroflame

      July 20, 2022 at 7:51 am

@arnold1125 Yes, they auto-snap to the middle of the screen when you try to move it, just like in landscape mode, but with much less width space.

The 11 inch with its screen ratio is perfect for portrait gaming (Think like a iPad mini but with extra screens for other apps on the top). but they ruin it.

Ffs how do you get it to work on a tv. Usb c Dongle + hdmi cable doesn’t extend, only mirrors. Yes I activated stage manager

      July 19, 2022 at 3:57 pm

These tech tubers expect you to know what cable and what input the screen has. Show it, explain in detail

I really don’t know why Apple doesn’t use regular words and wants to feel like they have their own words. That zooming of the window does not zoom in the windows, it makes them “Fullscreen”, why not title it what has been around forever “Fullscreen”. Zooming entails the content would become bigger but they don’t.
Even the name “stage manager” is a bit daft. Those windows are not stages they are windows. They just didn’t want to call it multi-tasking or windows manager.

Apple Is just remaking features the Mac has had for years and incorporating iOS features into Mac os. At this point they should just make them touch screen MacBooks

Is it really okay to instal it the beta version? I have a lot of work on my ipad, ( illustration etc ) will my data save after i install the 0s 16?

    • brightboxstudio

      July 20, 2022 at 11:00 am

I will wait to install the final release version. If you must try the unfinished beta, simply back up your entire iPad so that there is a complete copy from which you can, if needed, restore your iPad and all of the work on it.

Stage Manager is not effective making the content on screen smaller, less usable screen real estate.

  21. Eric Sparkman

    July 19, 2022 at 7:11 pm

I really think stage manager is for using an external monitor while the split screen is still meant for multitasking without an external monitor

For real work you simply can’t beat a MacBook Air with its integrated trackpad. IPad is just pleasure machine with a little magic and that’s about it.

I am so excited to finally play with this feature in September! Still very glad it’s optional though, as I prefer the current multitasking layout for my smaller 11” iPad Pro. Feels more like a feature I’d prefer on the 12.9” model and while using external displays.

Have seen an video/article about broken mac screens that get detached from the keyboard. The concept needs some polish but it would easily be doable.

Tired of all the whining about Apple not making iPads behave like the Mac. It’s an old argument that Apple is ignoring and only geeks want it. The average general use iPad owner could care less. But what we all could use is Multi-User Profiles or at least a guest mode.

Until iPad is can play two sources of audio at once, it cannot claim to multi task.

Thx for the review and thx for staying critical. Those so called iPad revolutions make me cringe. Given the price point of a M1 mac plus magic keyboard, the way that Apple make the iPad evolve is more then irritating. By the way, what is multi tasking without a genuine finder like desktop???

  34. Michael D'Angelo

    July 21, 2022 at 11:49 pm

I’m going to add the unpopular opinion: I would rather have full screen external monitor support-mirroring with traditional multi-tasking, than only getting full screen external monitor support only via stage manager. You get 4 apps in a weird layout only. Right now, I use Split View for 2 apps I am working with and have 3 or 4 others handy in slide over when I need them.
