Feels like he is kinda lacking in women players, which is a shame. A feminine presence can add so much to a roleplaying table !
C’mon ladies, dont be afraid, really, you’ll have tons of fun joining a campaign I promise.
And we need more people like Robert in this world. 🙂

Well, that beats my 23 year game. Granted, mine started as a homebrew setting that evolved into using TSR settings…. Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft, Planescape; and even, to a lesser extent, Birthright…. all have been woven together into the continuous timeline (or should I say, “timelines,” as I’ve made use of the Chronomancer book) of one ongoing big-picture campaign.

  47. Mister Sniffers

    April 29, 2022 at 11:15 pm

Yikes. I respect his control of his life and commitment to HIS game, but wouldn’t want to spend hours in this guy’s house for “fun!” Having played D&D since 1983, I’ve learned that it’s not about the setting, world or campaign -it’s about the people!

He’s said I/me/my dozens of times, but barely said “their enjoyment” or “their fun.” Those are some a big red flags. But oh well, everyone can still have fun their own way.

  48. Tali Ban GB

    April 29, 2022 at 11:36 pm

    Dumb Question:
    Yall think he has fun?

Seems like such a controlling game master that every waking moment of his life must be pure anxiety

    • Mister Sniffers

He’s spot on about the Satanic Panic in the 80s and early 90s. A group of classmates I wasn’t friends with invited me to join their DnD group when they saw me drawing a dwarf battling a demon in my notebook. I loved everything fantasy growing up. My mom put a stop to all that and made me join sports teams instead to keep me busy after school. Thanks mom, this is one of the many reasons I don’t talk to you anymore.

What level do some of these characters get to

    • POTP Printing

      May 1, 2022 at 9:50 pm

      Hey Tim,
We get to many various levels; and the leveling system for characters and enemies are a little different than standard DnD.
Currently my character (and first in Roberts game; 4 years real time) is Lvl 26 overall: Lvl 19 Ranger, Lvl 16 Warlock
We are nowhere near godlike characters and there’s many times that we feel the power of the enemies we face.

I’ve lost many character ‘friends’ in game; only to then help their offspring as they start anew as members of our party.

    May 1, 2022 at 9:06 pm

This is truly awesome. Only recently I’ve started playing D&D (5e) and not too long before that was when I discovered it, I’m in my early 20’s and for the first time in a long time I feel like I found something that makes me happy, and I hope to bring or spark this same feeling in others too. I’m about to start a solo campaign with my sister who just turned 20 and even though I feel like I probably will never be the best DM and this role stresses me out, it makes me really happy just knowing she accepted coming into this with me and building a world together.

  84. Angel Zavala

Says they have the best D&D game in the world but doesn’t let the players touch their own figurines. Aight, sounds like the best alright. Best to who mate? people who started in the 80s? A lot of figs and terrain does not a great DM make. Happy that your game has lasted this long but “best D&D game” is subjective and means something different to each person.

This style of playing the game is known as a West Marches campaign. It’s designed to allow as many adults with adult schedules to play dnd as possible. They’re not exactly designed to run for multiple decades but their structure certainly allows for that a little more than your traditional, 5-7 person group of regulars.

The idea of a person crying over the death of their character isn’t weird to me. People cry over fictional character deaths all the time. Prime example being Lion King. I’d argue the game character is more intense because it’s a part of you.

This sounds like a dream game. I would be devastated if my character died and I was out of the game. That feeling of loss once you have immersed yourself and then it is gone. A game of that depth fueling that deep commitment and emotion is storytelling of the highest level. Thank you for creating such a game.

“Rock music is the devil. D&D is the devil. If I don’t like the way you look, you’re the devil.” Pretty much sums up the religious fanatics and their sycophants that rail against the unknown in the case that God doesn’t have enough time in the day to deal with something as minor as music, literature or gaming. I hate fanatic asswipes that want to control everyone in the name of their gods.

I admire him for his devotion. I grew up in church and as a kid I bought a D&D set and our pastor at the time found out about it and told my parents to burn it (and my Smurf curtains). Haven’t seen it in the 4 years I’ve been playing. I’ve seen a number of my friends (ie. in game characters) pass away/die. The game continues because we create family lines so we eventually pick up the gauntlet as our sons and daughters.
That’s where new 1st lvl characters come to be and why goblins can still be a hinderance as we progress throughout the world.

hahhaa 1:09 he is playing for 1,2 million minutes which gives 1,2 million/60×24 is 833 days a year. This man has been playing DnD so long he is changing the laws of time

    • Black Cat Red River

      May 7, 2022 at 6:31 pm

I think the calculation was 10 hours per week x 52 weeks per year = 520 hours per year x 40 years of playing = 20,800 hours total, which would then = 1,248,000 minutes. So no laws of physics or time have been broken. Although knowing Rob, that’s probably a conservative estimate for how much time he actually devotes to game-related matters per week. If he’s just talking about session time with players actually at the table, then 10 hours might be an average. If he’s talking about game-related matters, then my semi-educated guess would be that the average weekly time investment is much higher than 10 hours.

When I was first approached to play D&D years ago I thought I was too cool for it (which just shows how insecure I was: I thought my ex-wife would make fun of me tbh.) Now, I envy this guy’s commitment and passion for something he loves. This is actually making the world a better place too. I can only hope I find something I care about this much when I’m ~50.

      Awesome huh?
Game looks like it would need a lot of effort, and really complex.
But to be able to create whole worlds and be able to play them with a friend is worth the effort..

    • Knight Slayer

      May 9, 2022 at 12:44 am

@Cipher tho, we’d need a DM(dungeon master) to do that.. so that means one of us plays while the other makes up the story. It’d be better to play with a Group of Friends.

    • Cipher

      May 9, 2022 at 12:55 am

@Knight Slayer Yeah, could be a bit hard to play with all the people together, but I think it’s worth a try.

Robert’s games look wonderful and his passion and creativity are evident, but to claim your D&D game to be the “best in the world” is awfully hubristic. Robert is clearly excellent at a very specific sort of D&D, which emphasizes miniatures, model building and set construction. There are many wide and varied forms of D&D (and RPGs in general) which are equally as detailed, just as technical, and as lovingly crafted as Robert’s games, which don’t even descend into the physical realm of miniatures – games contained entirely by the Theater of the Mind. This form of play relies heavily on lyrical and narrative immersion. Words are crafted with the same meticulous energy that Robert pours into his sets (watching Robert narrate his game, he is clearly no lyricist). For many, Robert’s games may indeed represent the “best in the world.” For others, they might miss the mark on what they feel is subjectively important in D&D. Claiming your table to be the “best in the world” is like a musician making the same claim of their compositions: no matter how brilliant the music might be, the claim is not only preposterous but spectacularly egoic.

9:59: “More than anything else, the game represents friendship. And I find that friendship is based on planks. You need something to hold it together. So we may have gone to high school together, but as we go through our lives, unless we have a plank, we’re not going to get together. We’re not going to fly to see each other. So, as long as I can keep doing it, hopefully for all of my life, I won’t lose my friends.”

And there you have the crux of the matter. How many people that you liked or loved do you miss now, and how many friendships have fallen away because your life wasn’t structured to hold them? Wardhaugh’s found a way to combat that, and good on him for knowing why that’s important. I hope *my* D&D group is still together in twenty years.

This is inspiring! Started a campaign back in 2’nd edition (Back in 1998), and it lasted all the way until 4’th edition came out. (Luckily) the campaign ended there, and so did our interests, but it has blown up again now with 5’th edition and after a solid 14 years away. And this video inspired me to continue this geeky hobby until I’m (even) old(er)

Its funny how he tries to make excuses for his strict rules on his figurines. Bro, you passionately built this intricate world for 40 years altering your life around them. If you told them to use a brand new pair of gloves each turn-you’d be well within your rights. This dude is the DM of DMs.

  293. Dane

    May 9, 2022 at 11:27 pm

Definitely committed GM to that style of running a game. Though doing the same type of game for 40 years sounds like a prison sentence and the miniatures are cool, but to much of a physical representation kills the imagination I think.

One thing not discussed here that I’d like to know is: how does he handle power creep over such a long period? Characters must reach level 20+ regularly. Also, like, do the people who are out of the game still come hang out because death should have meaning in a game but not to the point where people just stop hanging out. If the game never ends, being kicked out of it is a lifelong exile in real life lmao.

I started playing DnD in 1978. It was a blast…I was almost always the DM. The most important thing is to have a DM who is fun, lots of personality and can keep the players interested. Many detail oriented DM’s are a little too dry and serious to keep the players excited about the campaign.

At 12 and 13 a broad spectrum of the smarter boys played, but by 14 it was just the nerdy kids. By 16 I did not play anymore. I picked it up a few times in my college years, but didn’t stick with it. I miss it, but video-game FRPGs are always there. I lost all my books and ‘Dragon’ magazines during a move in the early ’90s anyway.

I never had the patience to paint figurines. We played without them, mostly.

Isn’t the appeal of dnd is that it takes place in your imagination and it’s the role of the dm to weave a narrative that paints vivid scenery and scenarios in the player’s mind? Having to constantly rearrange figurines and premade terrains seems cumbersome and miss the point. Maybe I’m wrong though, don’t play this game.

How is it the same game 40 years later? Some of players don’t even look like they’re 40 years old. If you were playing with a group of 5 people 40 years ago, but none of them are playing now is it still the same game? Is he just saying he’s running games in the same homebrew world he made 40 years ago? Because thats not “the same game for 40 years”. This makes no sense..

Campaign style D&D has no beginning or end. If and when your character permanently dies, or goes into retirement, you can roll a new one up, and the DM can insert him/her into the game. As a DM who is not blessed with great income, I now have the software to match and exceed my desire for virtually endless quantities of figures/terrain. Tabletop simulator is the greatest tool in the toolbox for me. I can host my game, and friends can have a seat at the virtual table via the internet. Plus, we can use it to play any other game that we want…chess, checkers, Warhammer, Risk, poker, magic, monopoly, Tailsman…etc. Btw, it’s even more amazing in VR. It’s (my campaign) not really appropriate for most children. Think of its content as rated R fantasy.

We played Warhammer in the early 90s on a pool table. The board lifted up on wires so we could play pool and put the keg fridge to good use. Most of the figs and terrain was ours but we let people paint or rather they had to at least paint one fig before they could play.
The no touching thing is odd. But then the longest game we had was 3 months.

I’m honored to know a DM of this caliber that has been running a system loosely based on DnD but set in Tolkien’s LOTR world. He’s been running the game world with a large number of players and characters for over 40 years as well. It’s crazy to me how he keeps it all straight but he can wax poetic for hours on end about the deeds performed over the many years of his campaign world.

I have an ongoing storyline with my wife and my son’s two God-Fathers. We all met in College back in the early 90’s and preferred playing an interactive story over watching tv or just sitting around drinking.

The storylines involve several dozen characters, all inter-related to some degree and the story is still ongoing. Whenever we get together, we’ll play another few scenarios. It’s a fantastic way to spend time with friends. Will enjoy it til my dying day.

I’d be interested to see how the political, economic and societal aspects of the villages and towns have developed over the past 40 years.

For example, have people done quests for the children of other quest givers 20-30 years ago?

Did a decision by players back in the 80s create drastic ramafications for the players of today?

Has there been any butterfly affects? Where tiny decisions back in the early days of the campaign have changed things on a monumental scale now?

As ‘nerdy’ as some people might think he is, the attention, mastering and love of his craft is to be truly admired. Watching this was phenomenal seeing how 1 man has birthed a whole community of players, creating phenomenal quests and most importantly developed a platform for OTHER people to enjoy themselves. Well done Robert! 🙂

This looks more like arrested development at display. It’s tantamount to grown men still sitting in a sand box where they began making castles at the age of 5… only now their sand castles tower 500-feet in the air and they’re middle-aged men… BUT THEY ARE STILL JUST PLAYING WITH SAND CASTLES!

(for people who don’t understand the game) this is fantasy game loosely based on war games that generals in the old times would use to plot out there next moves during times of war, and some militaries actually still use this format of tactics and plotting out their tactics as well do simulations in rooms called war rooms back then and now, and there is also Warhammer which is more closely tied to the old war games generals would use in the war rooms

D&D should get the full story, in painstaking microscopic detail, every event and even jokes. Then get the old Skyrim writing team to just glue it together. And make a D&D version of Skyrim, but on a much bigger and more expensive scale. No meta jokes, no PC, if the right is offended, screw em. If the left is offended, oh well.

It would be game of the year for probably 20 years.

The beauty of D&D is that, while this level of realistic figurine play is quite the accomplishment and can add a lot to game play, the entire game can be played with just imagination. A set of dice and a character sheet are really all that a player needs. The DM just needs to know what rules they’re playing by and have an idea of where they want the story to go. It can be played with vigorous amounts of preparation, or it can be played extemporaneously. It is what you make it ✨

@memescoper I would disagree on TV series because table top games are a different thing. You are the main character in this fiction and you make the story. Its a hobby, a sport. It involves you. A TV show is short passive, inactive entertainment.

In the UK I had a thief called Rhesus Thrungesprocket in 1977-84 who I donated to an American fellow student in the latter year. He took Rhesus back to the USA and still uses him sometimes to this day. Rhesus is about 45 years old.

I think he is a bit crazy tbh. He can’t force people to keep playing if they don’t want to. I imagine he’d be pissed if somebody stopped. That’s not cool.

This is very cool but his extremely controlling personality would drive me totally insane.

So anyone who plays with him can’t touch, use, paint or bring their own figures? I’m not a DnD player but that destroys most of the fun.

This video is way too “woah look he plays so much d&d, look there are miniatures, look those are DICE, this is all quirky like Stranger Things lol”

I want to know what this campaign is ABOUT, god dammit.

This, right here, is what it looks like to “live the perfect life”. Being able to spend your life doing what you love most with no major restrictions, having friends join you in it, and honestly enjoying each day of your life.
This is the standard of living I wish we could all have.

Honestly this is borderline pathological … this is not a hobby anymore. I am a Dungeon Master and the ego and stress and how casually he addresses it is not healthy.

Imagine telling your daughter that her ex-boyfriend is contracually obligated to play for the next 100 years and thats your problem now

  787. Shockz Hybrid

    May 30, 2022 at 1:01 am

The story seems fun but he lowkey seems like he’s not very fun to p[lay with. Seems like he’d kill your character after you played them for 5 years and kick you to the curb to never see you again

    10hrs x 52 weeks(1 year) = 520hrs x 60min =31,200 minutes a year. Stick to d&d because math is not your thing.

    May 30, 2022 at 1:30 am

Does this guy let anyone play for free no matter your skill level or does he charge you like some type of fee to get involved with his campaign like you would with a club membership?
