I Used AirPods Live Translation on My Family. This Is a Big Deal. | One More Thing
One of Apple’s most interesting new products is the ability to use AirPods for live language translation. CNET’s Bridget Carey talks about her experience using it with her Spanish-speaking family, along with her first impressions with AirPods Pro 3. You can find the products mentioned in this video linked below Apple Airpods Pro 3: *CNET…

Unboxing Apple’s New $549 AirPods Max 2 in Purple
At first glance, the AirPods Max 2 don’t seem like much of an upgrade from their predecessor. But when you factor in the improved noise canceling, sound quality, voice-calling performance and new features, they do seem to be about 20% better than the previous model. That may not seem like a huge difference, but it’s…

Isn’t it just a speaker? Do you NEED to have airpods for the apps feature? That sounds weird to me if it’s the app doing all the work. Might as well just have it on the table and translate both on the screen too

These translation apps are very easily confused by slang. So if you’re speaking Spanish and you say stuff like AY NOS VIDRIOS AL RATÓN, the AI will be baffled. At least for now.

Tha main problem I have with the live translation is how far behind the best Siri is when it comes to speech synthesis. I have NaturealReader and it is hard to describe _how much better it sounds_ THAN THE APPLE VOICES.

There goes the language skills many have built up socialising with others speaking another language.
I guess watching European news channels would be easier but at the same time it’s the loss of language skills (no matter how little in the first place) that’s the concern.
The strap with iPhone looks like Bridget is the bus conductor on London bus when the bus conductor went around to sell bus tickets after passengers got on the bus. (In Sydney Australia, last time I saw one such bus conductor was around my time of last year high school or first year university decades ago.)

Mic demo felt a bit weak, but there’s hope!
Paired with the 17 lineup’s front cam and some solid SW updates, this combo could be a real game-changer.
Feels like Apple finally had the courage to refocus on innovation this year.

I’ve tested multiple “live” translation earpods and while they work reasonably well in quiet, controlled (single person speaking) settings, real world situations like restaurants, shopping, outdoor chats like doing tourist travel talking in a group these types of hardware fail. Let’s see if a[ple has better conversation isolation algorithms

Until Apple improves the AI on the audio inputs to remove things like wind noise, side conversations and someone’s hair brushing against the mics as well as adding the intelligence to predict the next word it missed during translation, the live translation feature is going to be error-prone and pretty useless.
@user-oj8ss4zq3x
September 20, 2025 at 6:03 pm
Newsflash live translation doesn’t work anywhere near as good as one might think. Hopefully it will in the future. It basically just picks up parts of conversations.

@CowboyOdie
September 21, 2025 at 2:58 am
About two way conversation, I fully expected Apple to say you can wear one pod and hand its mate to the other person. Then it would translate whatever language the wearer is not speaking into each pod independently. For example, the left one (I’m wearing) would translate anything not said in English. The right one I loaned to my gf translates anything not said in French. I realize a lot of people would not want to share their pods… but there are times when that would be exactly what you need. And I would think it’s something a company like Apple could pull off in a heartbeat.
@deputydd4364
September 22, 2025 at 2:38 am
No way I’m putting someone else’s AirPods in my ear or lending my pristine AirPods from my clean ears to someone else’s wax filled organs!!! They can just read the translation on the screen as I talk (already used it on a French trip, I reckon about 80% effective)

September 21, 2025 at 12:25 pm
I wish this could be done with two sets of EarPods and just one phone. My girlfriend is Latin learning English. And we tried these out this weekend. At home in a quiet environment they work great! But out in public the phones are picking up on everyone’s conversations around us and not just ours. I wish we could isolate the conversation between two EarPods and not have to use the phone as a mic.

I’ve been using live translation for a while with my Galaxy buds 3 pros for a about year now at first I wasn’t impressed, I bought the meta ray bans soon afterwards and tested them both with a Mexican coworker the Raybans came out on top, she had to slow down with the ear buds but my Galaxy phone was in my pocket, I have tested them recently at work around some Spanish contractors, they did a little better and the phone was out on the desk, neither are perfect but the Raybans doesn’t need your phone to be out, I also have the INMO Air2 and it worked better but there are no sound only visual across the lenses, I also have the 15 pro max and upgrading to the 17 pro max but I don’t think im getting the new airpods, I have the powerbeats pros as a backup to the earbuds and a apple watch that i forget that i have sometimes cause I the Galaxy watch ultra everyday, which lasts 2 days on a charge, with Z fold 6, the Apple products are backups but thats not to say i don’t like them, i do I just don’t want to be locked in that ecosystem.

@WafflesIsTheStuff
September 21, 2025 at 1:24 pm
Well that’s a bit shocking. I was not expecting them to already be this commitment to Siri. Sure raises a lot of concerns and questions but apart from the obvious ones, how does Apple think this will play out exactly? Are they becoming like Google who just start and abandon huge projects like Stadia that did not meet their expectations then just jump to whatever’s next ? Because i only see a few scenarios where it is understandable. With so much going on, it’s looking more like a pet project than anything else. But i guess there’s enough to give Apple the benefit of the doubt and remain optimistic.
