The Loop automated insulin delivery system, developed by the community of hackers #WeAreNotWaiting, offers more flexibility and control than FDA-approved systems on the market. I’ve been using it for over six months — and I’m not looking back.

**This video is not medical advice. Loop is highly experimental and not approved by the FDA to treat diabetes. Users take full responsibility for building and running it at their own risk.**

The History of Loop:

*This video omits an important player in the creation of Loop, Ben West. He decoded the communication protocol that allowed the DIY movement of looping to start, and wrote much of OpenAPS.*

fda approved doesnt mean that the product is safe (its always the users fault if is not btw), and they are way far away from beeing good, safe or even up on time. just look at the ui. every mp3 player from the 90s has done it better.

the project sounds great and has so much hard work from everyone, but i’m always worried about the security of these devices.. ultimately they all connect to a cell phone that has constant access to the internet.. is taking control out of the users hands good if it leaves the an opening for someone else to get in?

    Still sounds sinister!
Put your trust not in this world nor the things in it. It’s not going to last. But Lord Jesus Christ, the risen Savior suffered, bled, and died on the cross for your sins. He was buried and rose on the 3rd day according to the scriptures! He is the Only Begotten Son of the Living God of the heavens and earth! He is the ONLY way to eternal life. He bore your sins and wants you to come by faith and believe on Him. Repent of your sins and trust in Him. Confess Him as your Lord and Savior. He’s coming back to earth soon to gather those who have put their trust and faith in Him alone. You don’t need to fear the end of this world He’s going to judge evil people and those who refuse to trust in Him. They experience God’s wrath and they will be punished eternally. Those who trust in Jesus Christ are SAFE! HE IS OUR ONLY HOPE.
No good person, good behavior or money can save you!!!
No earthly plan can save you!!!
Only Jesus Christ gives you the chance to be born again through faith in Him and security.
His gift of eternal life is FREE, but it costed Him everything.
Don’t waste your chance to be free from sin and receive eternal life!

And why is CNET promoting a NON FDA approved method when Omnipod 5 which is FDA approved will do this on its own?

    • Christian Fuchs

      April 12, 2022 at 10:37 pm

because it is not working. it claims it does, but not in a working way and way not as good at all.

    • Greg Phelps

      April 13, 2022 at 12:07 am

They stated multiple times in the video that it’s not FDA approved

    • Christian Fuchs

      April 13, 2022 at 4:35 am

@Greg Phelps do you really think such exists? But to proof it: ask every person who’s using such a pump, and what their troubles with this device are.

    • infg3570

      April 13, 2022 at 12:57 pm

Open source gangs typically get it right faster and better. But use the Omnipod 5 since it is sanctioned (the guy did stipulate more times than I care to count that “It’s not FDA approved” 😒).

  24. STOP Diabetes

    April 12, 2022 at 11:30 pm

Here’s medical advice: Don’t do this. One mistake and you’re dead. If you are sleeping and your “hacking” gives you too much insulin… well, that’s that. I’m a T1 x 30 years. I’m also an NP and a diabetes educator. Let the flames begin…

    • Julian Shuster

      April 13, 2022 at 5:07 am

all of these systems (Loop, AndroidAPS, OpenAPS) have set insulin constraints and predictions that make it so that regardless of any insulin given, it can always back out of the treatment decision. Granted, it is entirely up to the user to set these things like with normal diabetes management. A lot of work by the community and thousands of man hours have been put in the creation of these systems to ensure safety.

I would even go as far to say that these systems are safer than manual treatment. For example, OpenAPS and AndroidAPS have a feature known as Autosens. Autosens calculates your sensitivity to insulin based on blood glucose deviations per insulin given. Insulin resistance is varied day to day and Autosens has saved me from random hypos and even high resistance days.

    • Evan Sayles

      April 13, 2022 at 1:02 pm

Read the documentation for these open-source projects. They are designed to be safer than injections or un-looped pumps, with redundant safeguards to prevent insulin overdosing. I use AndroidAPS and I’ve had a low blood sugar less than 1% of the time in the last week: significantly better than when I was manually bolusing and changing basal rates.

Really awesome that they started the movement to improve insulin pump technology but the big companies have taken their ideas and made them into working, FDA approved devices. Tandem pumps with control iq does the amount of this stuff that matters and Omnipod 5 algorithm is on the way. Tandem has thousands of users data too. Even though that is mentioned in the video it’s not enough to make me feel like they are promoting the safer options.

    • Evan Sayles

      April 13, 2022 at 1:44 pm

The commercial options are great and I’m excited for more people to get access to them. However, the open-source options are years ahead of any of these companies in terms of their ability to issue corrections and handle changes with minimal input from the user. If there are people who are willing to look beyond what’s available off the shelf, I think the open-source community has a lot to offer.

I’ve also been looping for years using AndroidAPS. It’s changed my life entirely for the better. My A1c has never been better and I almost never have dangerous lows anymore. The looping systems are incredibly effective, and best of all I can go hours without thinking about my diabetes at all. The long-haulers know just how exhausting management can be, and AndroidAPS has taken so much of that burden off my shoulders. Thanks for making this video and spreading the word!

  32. Sascha Stiefeling

    April 13, 2022 at 9:11 pm

    Hey Dude.
First of all i would like to give you my props for that video from a technical Viewpoint.
Very well made. Good Visuals. Good on Cam Performance. In short great Production Value.
    But !!
I believe you are promoting the wrong message.
I started Looping back in the days around 2016. I had the same level of enthusiasm about that stuff as you are now. And that is absolutly fine. I was diagnosed in 2008 with age of 37. It took me years to learn about my diabetes and how to deal with it utilizing the available Tools and treatments. In 2016 i discovered the benefits of looping and (as is said) was blown away.
So far so good. Dont get me wrong. Your diagnosis is not so long ago. Almost one year ago. Do you really think its a good thing to promote Looping to potentional “newbies” while being a Newbie by your self ?
“I hacked my Insulin Pump”. Sorry No you dont. You just copied & pasted some work that other great Folks from our Community were great enough to share. And so did i back in the days. Long story short. In my opinion your video sells the message: Hack your Pump and your T1D runs on Autopilot. And that is for me more than risky. Because it isnt that easy.
Sure you can get into looping very easy. There is al lot of help on the webs that will guide you there. But guess what. Using Loop and other DIY Systems is still a risk that you take for yourself. No matter how well those System are performing. In the end of the Day you are responsible for what your are doing. When my Loop fails or stops working for whatever Reason i know how can handle my T1D manually. Because i was used to do it for years. And i assume (dont take it personally) after one year of living with T1D your not at this stage. Maybe im wrong. I hope you get my points.

  34. robertkyllo

    April 14, 2022 at 7:03 pm

This is a wonderful video. I’ve had type 1 for 40+ years and have seen almost no improvement in the way I care for myself. There’s been no new medications except for the transition from animal to human insulins and the transition to the new ultra-fast and ultra-slow acting insulins. Why would companies be motivated to progress the tech with all the money to be made? Companies are a living financial entity which die without income. Will our politicians encourage a different path? No. Loop could be the first real improvement. Sad situation.

for a product/app that was made by a bunch of cool people, not like a big company with loads of R&D money, this is EXTREMELY well made. great job guys at Loop, well done.
