25 years ago, I was working as front desk receptionist/admin assistant at an new start up analytical laboratory.
The company had done well and the founder CEO put on a big celebration.
The lab had made its first million dollar in profits!
A small voice in my head said to remind him that the lab techs…the foundation of his business….were making $8. an hour.
I held my breath and sent off an email to him.
He announced in the next staff meeting that lab techs were getting a raise up to $11. an hour! because the lab could not make a million without them!
So…use your voice!

A big part of being able to speak up in an organization like a company is having managers/execs above you that are a) respectful and b) willing to have your back. I’m fairly self-confident enough to call out BS when needed even from people all the way up the chain. But my “success” at doing that (meaning, my ability to do so to enact positive change and not get fired) often hinged upon having the respect of higher ups and the support of a manager/director/CTO right above me. Of course, I do my best to do my job well so there’s a reason for that respect and backup but there have been plenty of times I didn’t have that support and it went sideways.

I did quit my job, and it was because I did speak up–respectfully, and repeatedly–and I was ignored at first, and bullied when I was insistent. I’ve always been a boat-rocker, and not everybody likes that. If we want to encourage people to speak up, we have to show up for them and back them up.

I feel you. And even when we did our best to fully understand the other person or even when the other person felt their perspective were fully understood, there is still this unwillingness to listen to our concerns. It’s like they are still more obsessed with using their power to judge us than to at least listen. It’s so frustrating. Glad you were able to walk away to protect your peace tbh.

I had friends who were dance teachers. The woman said she was afraid of getting in front of a crowd and speaking. I told her everyone in the audience goes to the bathroom the same as her. Just think of all of them sitting there on a toilet with their pants down. Now she is cured of her fear of speaking in public. Does anyone have a cure for giggling too much?

I see many people speak-up for something they think is true… intimidating others that do not agree,and getting even more convinced of the worldwide conspiracy against their conviction…. And speaking hatred, while they themselves think that ‘ it is simply the truth!’
Speaking the truth with technicians in Telecom for example about company social injustice, or on purpose ignoring superior equipment because of power/money/politics… with every meeting slowing down the exchange of daily work related issues, because of what that one person thinks is injustice, cover-up, fraud or abuse.
Many whistleblower are just frustrated workers and regarded traitors by their colleagues.
There’s an interesting twilight zone when addressing ‘the Truth’ and speaking up.
