What do you hear when you sit in silence? For artist Rose B. Simpson, that question is the beginning of all art. She comes from a line of ceramic artists stretching back generations and, as part of her multidisciplinary work, she also builds custom lowrider cars. (If that sounds like a contradiction, that’s kind of the point.) In conversation with “Design Matters” podcast host Debbie Millman, Simpson invites you to find your own aesthetic — not by searching, but by listening. (Recorded at TEDNext 2025 on November 10, 2025)

This powerful conversation deeply moved me. It taught me that creativity isn’t just making art; it’s a vulnerable act of connecting with our true selves. Their raw honesty gave me the courage to embrace my own messy, beautiful creative process without any fear of judgment.

@CenturyWisdom-q5w you explained the fear I harbor as I draw, paint or create…am I accessing something inside? Do we all have ‘it’? Is there better in me or others to take up this space in the world? Am I good enough (as a person, yes showing my true vulnerability) to create this and put this ‘out there where others may see it? Hear it? Experience it and judge its originator? Time to trust myself. I won’t know until I return to creating.

As a creative we can ask what potential can I see & how can I be of service. Begin with the senses, open eyes…
