You can also install windows on a Mac without bootcamp. This is only if you want replace OS X with windows, using Alt at startup.

I understand why you can’t use the latest Windows variant (11) for this installation. But why is that fellow using macOS 11 Big Sur when he could also use macOS 12 Monterey? Monterey on an Intel Mac still includes Boot Camp Assistant even though it’s not on Apple Silicon Monterey installations.

Been there, done that years ago… Window’s on my specked out 2015 Mac laptop absolutely sucks. The fans go crazy and I can’t stand using it on my Mac laptop which otherwise runs very quiet when running macOS. If you need both systems, you’re almost better off getting a cheap Windows laptop in addition to your Mac laptop or desktop. I also feel like Windows runs slow and is laggy on a Mac. My Mac laptop has a 1 TB hard drive, so I split it pretty much down the middle and it still sucks running Windows.

Eh, I’m using it currently on my 2019 16″ MacBook Pro and there’s really no lag. Though I do agree the fans ramp up when on Windows. However, I never really care about that because I have headphones on while playing a game or talking to someone anyway (also that happens on macOS as well when doing similar tasks, and I much rather have a cool computer than a hot computer) lol. My opinion is I rather not have an additional laptop, but again, my opinion. Doing whatever works for your workflow should be the goal.

I have installed Windows on almost every Mac just for the versatility. It’s been pretty handy. For my kids who like the Mac but want to boot to Windows for games, it’s great on our travel laptop. My niece had to start working from home and I rebuilt her old MacBook Air so she could dual-boot for work software. (Her hard drive was dead, so I got a new one that was more accommodating for the space requirements of dual booting.) If a family member or friend needs a temporary computer because their current one goes belly up, I usually have a spare to loan and it will run two common operating systems. I have gone through this process many times. The topic in this video was handled in a straightforward and accessible way.

You’d need an Intel based Mac first.
Anyway if you need Windows just get a PC since you’d need an Intel based one anyway.

    • Windows 7Pro2009

      January 29, 2022 at 7:29 pm

You can only run Windows 10 ARM as a virtual machine on an M1 Mac. This video is about installing Windows 10 *natively* on a Mac, so you MUST have an Intel based Mac to install Windows natively i.e on the bare metal.

Great explainer video regarding Boot Camp. But running Windows as a virtual machine allows running both Mac and Windows at the same time! And also permits the very handy sharing of data and files between Mac and Windows! So, how can you make a video about “how to run Windows on a Mac” and not also discuss the typically much superior way of doing so using VMware Fusion or Parallels (the latter of which also informally supports running Windows on M1 Silicon Macs)? That is a huge and horrific omission from an otherwise nice video. And not up to your usual very high standards. Your readers/viewers deserve better and more complete information in order to make informed decisions. So, how about appending to the video a few minutes regarding Fusion and Parallels? That would be great and a huge improvement. 😃

      January 31, 2022 at 2:42 pm

I have installed Win11 on my M1 Mac using Parallels. Parallels itself walks you through the process. It seems to run just fine, but software choices for the ARM version of Windows are pretty limited at present (there is x86 emulation, but it’s pathetically slow.)
And, of course, Parallels itself has to be purchased. Microsoft, so far, hasn’t hit me up for a license purchase, but it’s not clear how long that free ride will last.

I wonder if an in place windows 11 upgrade would work?

    • Şaban Güvenç

      January 30, 2022 at 11:02 pm

Yes it does. But you have to modify some files in ISO file of windows 11. Then run setup in that ISO file to upgrade bootcamp to windows 11. I did it and it works.

Hey man I’ve got a question regarding this, so I’ve actually had windows for about half a year now on my Mac, and roughly 3 months ago my windows became very weird.

It would always go into an infinite boot up whenever I would restart, out into sleep mode or shut down on the windows version.

Ive tried reinstalling windows but it’s no good.

Restarting on the Mac version works perfectly fine so yeah I need some help

ALSO a new problem has occurred hah, do you have any other tips for the windows support software being stuck? I tried the 3 things you mentioned but it is still stuck

I included a small section to address this. Try running Disk Utilities to repair your hard drive. Also make sure your computer has the privacy and security settings to allow for downloading from any site. Took me a few tries too but it eventually worked.
