Having trouble falling asleep — or staying asleep? Alcohol, sleeping pills or drugs like marijuana help you in the short-term, but they’re only a quick fix, says sleep scientist Matt Walker. There is, however, one proven way to treat your insomnia and help you get the zzz’s you need.

Sleep — we spend one-third of our lives doing it, but what exactly do we get out of it? And how can we do it better? In this TED series, sleep scientist Matt Walker uncovers the facts and secrets behind our nightly slumber. (Made possible with the support of Oura) Check out more episodes on TED.com:

I have tried CPTI after years of problems with sleep and I wouldn’t say this was a wonderful experience . Sleep deprivation, which this methodic is based on, was harsh by itself, but the worst thing was that the problems with sleep eventually returned in some time after CPTI ended. You may try it if you’re desperate but no magic pill there. What REALLY helped me was reading a book by Sasha Stephens ‘Effortless Sleep Method’, and after this I don’t have any issues with sleeping. And even if I have I don’t really care so much as I did before.

I had a similar experience as yours if not worse, as delaying the time of going to bed and yet having to get up early for work nearly killed me. No, it didn’t work for me despite the regular online support, in fact it made me feel even more helpless. I eventually gave up work altogether as a last resort, this was at the end of May. Will read the book you recommend, even though I have a collection on the genre.

Omfg can the mental health institution please stop pretending that CBT works as a catch all for all mental health problems.
It has its specific uses, correct, but that is about 10% of cases where they use it to treat 90% of issues.

For example my insomnia is due to CPTSD which CBT would most likely just exacerbate, as it is not holistic and does not treat my body where the trauma is stored.

For me regular yoga, massage treatment and yes medical thc is much more effective than trying to solve the problem through changing my thoughts (I have tried this treatment extensively).

This worked for my mum’s insomnia. She was prescribed dozens of drugs that just made it worse until she finally was taken to a sleep clinic. Simple little techniques like not drinking caffeine or alcohol, not lying in and staying out of your bed if you can’t sleep until you feel tired (e.g. going for a walk or reading a book) did her a world of good

I tried getting CBT for my insomnia, both therapists just referred me to trazodone, which has been working somewhat.

  19. Real Talk

    December 15, 2021 at 11:26 pm

CBT does not necessarily work for everyone even in terms of normal therapy, and that’s an important point to make. It is worth giving a shot if you have not had CBT before or find it effective for you. But also keep in mind that how it’s performed, and how well it works for you, may depend a lot on the therapist and how well they mesh with you. They may also just refer you for medications anyway. This video is essentially claiming that going to therapy will allow you to circumvent the use of medication, and that is *not* necessarily the case.

Low dose THC works like a charm. Have been on trazodone, clonazepam, and melatonin in different combinations and only helped with sleep for a few weeks; I developed a tolerance to them so quick that it was scary to keep up titrating the doses.

No, this is a bad idea.
However you might sleep better for the first couple of nights, it will eventually stop working and you will find yourself always sleeping there out of the fear of not sleeping if try to sleep in the normal bed. You will become dependent on that.
Trust me i just recovered from insomnia. I thought I couldnt sleep because i was doing something wrong and i had the feeling that my thoughts were keeping me up all night. I got a book from my mom about sleep and it was the best gift i could ever have gotten.

Making authortive statements about medications, sleep therapies or any other treatment is really unhelpful. Especially when a significant minority doesn’t respond to the treatment you present as the only treatment that works & imply that all other treatments don’t work for anyone, or that using drugs is not a good thing

I have chronic pain (don’t even start!) which causes my insomnia. I have found ways to mitigate MY sleep issues.

Every time some doctor comes along & says sleep hygiene, as they define it, is the ONLY way to manage insomnia, people like me get a kick in the guts. As a person who lives with chronic pain, I get undermined by the medical system thank you very much!

Cannabis is not just THC so to refer to it as an isolated compound is misleading at best, disinformation at worst.
Cannabis has an entourage effect caused by many molecules. Learn about it before pretending to have authority.

Think about the people you have kicked in the guts with this video. Those you can’t help with anything in this whole series but have nonetheless raised hope because we are always looking for a better treatment, TED has a reputation for bringing us quality science & those thumbnails, then not only do you not have anything useful but you then kick us while we are down by undermining what little relief we have found.

Now I’m so angry I can’t sleep at all!

    Thanks for less than nothing

      December 17, 2021 at 8:13 am

Would love to try CBTI, but the American “healthcare” system is a huge barrier!! I’ve had doctors tell me CBTI is the new “gold standard” treatment for insomnia only to be unable to find any CBTI practitioners in my state that accept my insurance. So I can either keep using trial and error on sleep meds, or go completely broke paying for CBTi out of pocket?!?! So frustrating – so tired.
