On a mission to create a hunger-free world, agricultural entrepreneur Cedric Habiyaremye makes the case for cultivating quinoa — and other versatile, nutrient-rich grains — in places experiencing malnutrition, like his native Rwanda. He shares a model to help smallholder farmers across Africa diversify their fields with nutritious and indigenous crops, taking a step towards ensuring healthy foods are available and affordable for all.

What’s remarkable about this video is that the rise in popularity in quinoa has driven up its price so high that in Peru it’s causing a malnutrition crisis bc farmers can no longer afford to eat it.

Cedric, Quinoa is such a new gift to the world. I grew up in Colombia and NO ONE cooked quinoa. Ironically I discovered it in the US when it became known as a super food. This is the type of TED talk that has value.

This is a great video. I love quinoa. Is it true that we grow enough food to feed 10 billion people but a lot of it ends up getting fed to our livestock to meet demand for meat markets in rich countries? Soy beans are fed to cows but unless you have an allergy most people could get protein from soy too could we not?

I stock shelves in a grocery store. I would love to work on a farm one day growing quinoa to help world hunger. the fact that people live in poverty anywhere makes me infuriated

This is one of my favorite foods. I didn’t know that it was a complete protein source though. Might be an ideal grain for eating while exercising heavily.

Quinoa tastes soapy to me. It probably has high levels of saponin in it, but it’s ruined every thing I’ve ever had it in.

    Also… the phonetics sucks. XD

Congratulations on the wonderful work! Here in Brazil quinoa is still part of the recent fashion for healthy and poorly known foods, it is still not really popular. I will endeavor to change that.
But we have a beautiful rural tradition, which came from Central America and took root in the culture of all of Latin America: the MILPA Consortium. Corn, beans and pumpkin, planted together. Sometimes it receives the name Três Marias. The text is already long, if you don’t know it yet, look it up and you’ll like it. Everything is based on heirloom varieties, the farmer always owns the seeds. Congratulations also on your mother, beautiful woman. And for the son she has.

Any extra variety in the cycle of the crop is actually a great way to keep the ground healthy, also by having this 3 or 4 plant in rotation if one field don’t produce well usually the other crop do great that year.
