Oooh coevolution is so cool, and dogs are such a prime example to study it! the mutualism of selectively advantageous traits have really made the two species evolve in a way that is intricately related. I wonder if we can make more headway into telling if some traits were consciously artificially selected for or subconscious tho, especially behavioural ones

Teaching a dog to respond to a human pointing, only shows that a dog can be taught to respond to a human pointing. Not that it has some kind of bred in knowledge about human pointing.

I wish this explained more about the pointing behavior. Is it an evolutionary “proto-dogs that understood pointing survived, and those that didn’t died” thing, or some kind of “humans taught proto-dogs this, and selected for those that understood”?
Scoville
April 15, 2022 at 10:19 pm
I think it’s a mixture of both, mostly because dogs are so observant. At some point during “caveman times” (so to speak), humans and wolves/dogs realized they could be very helpful to each other. Ever since then we’ve been unavoidably picking up on each other’s behavior and skills, especially when it’s helpful (e.g. WE notice a type of barking/growling when danger lurks nearby, their ability to hear a sound before we can, smelling their way to something of interest, etc.). Those traits were all extremely helpful to early humans, obviously, and we helped to PROTECT them and teach them how to live more sensibly.
Since the desire for protection is instinctual, I feel like they must have used their superior senses and supreme attentiveness to help us and to help us help themselves, and we likewise used our bigger brains.

My dog Mr. Freckles (r.i.p) recognized the word “chicken”. I vocalized it in many different ways and did not always offer the treat. His reaction was consistently to wiggle and whine/bark and in his later years, he’d get so excited that his teeth would chatter!🤣 Growing up, all of our dogs lived outside and our bonds were not nearly as strong as the ones I’ve had with Freckles. He changed my attitude and life by bringing these beautiful animals indoors to share our daily wacky lives.❤Love the reseaech!!

I’ve actually started training my Transylvanian scent hound rescue OUT of waiting for help because she does it too much. She’s very intelligent, I saw that on day one. So I’ve been giving her cardboard boxes with treats closed inside and lots of effort needed. At first she didn’t want to do it. Then watching one of my other dogs get that treat was too much for her! Lol She can now do low effort box puzzles. Mainly because she could see she was missing out on food….. Training dogs is so rewarding….

Since humans interact with dogs so often, seemingly minor things can make a big difference. For example children can be afraid of dogs, but the cuter they look the less likely they are to be afraid, no matter how deadly the dog can be. So cuteness may be very helpful for dealing with human children.

So… I have to argue the pointing test. My cats understand it. My magpie understands it. The wild crows understand it, when I point to a bit of cracked corn they missed. The pigeons and geese don’t. But the crows and ravens? Yes.
My magpie, Tikka, understands it when I point to a spice jar and ask him to ‘scoot here’. He’ll shove it across the counter to me. He’s a very clever bird
NeraSomnia • Black Dreams

Magpies, crows, and ravens are Corvids. Corvids are incredibly smart, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they understood pointing– especially if one is your pet.

They still have a legacy of adaptation to (and by) the human environment and probably have a better chance of thriving on the outskirts of human society than probably quite a few other canines, let alone most other species.
(Also apparently in some cultures/some people prefer their dogs to be free-ranging rather than confined within a household, so there’s that – they might still have an owner, just that it’s “that village” rather than a person or household)

I think John Pilley and Chaser paved the way to prove dogs can differentiate two identical words with two different meanings depending on context, which kinda points to dogs understanding grammar.
Stella and Bunny combine different words to come up with some pretty wild abstract concepts. I remember Stella said “help water outside” when the “beach” button went kaput – meaning she knows the meaning of every word she uses, and came up with a way to express the idea she wanted with the words that were available to her.

Weird. Wolf Biologist say wolves also communicate with facial cues. Wolves with a full, facial mask and eyebrow spots can Express facial cues more readily than wolves without a facial mask.
They can show expressive eyes, but perhaps not as often as dogs.

Those dogs’ eyes are always asking for more, no matter how much food you have given to them.

All dogs, big and small, are man made and not natural. They’ve been bred to be completely dependant on humans for survival

It’s not really fair to fault humans for only understanding “6 types of barks” when most people understand 80-90% of dogs’ body language, which itself is the primary way dogs/wolves communicate.

primal food drive has many emergent behaviours that are easily anthropomorphized

OMG! If you want to have a good laugh 😆…I mean Crying laughing 😭🤣 you need to watch the cat video with those word buttons 🤣 🤦♂️ I’ve had cats. There’s NO WAY!!! No way they understand. Of course they can be trained but the owners acting like their cat is actually talking to them is HYSTERICAL! Especially because the cats always look like if they’re thinking anything, they’re thinking this Human has lost it’s mind! 😅

I don’t believe ‘evolved’ is an accurate enough term to describe this process.
