We’re living in a cyberpunk dystopian world. Practices like this should be illegal. The government and companies shouldn’t be allowed to spy on people and learn everything about them, its literally a form of stalking and it’s creepy just like it would be if it was someone you know who had all these details about you. It’s messed up that we’re at the point where society just accepts mass surveillance

Why does all enforcement have to be so heavy handed anyway? I loved the auto obfuscation for operators. We need more visibility into this so that it doesn’t end up enforced for fear and protocols are in place to make sure the human element is taken into account and trust that there’s a feedback loop to improve the system for everyone in providing meaningful services not just stalkerish ones.

You can’t have both safety and privacy (in public) in the same time. China’s been doing this for a long time. They even caught escaping criminals the moment they stepped into big cities. They have one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

    Like the video game watchdogs.
I know people crap on about being spied on. Let’s be honest, you are being self righteous believing someone thinks you’re that interesting to be watched. Just do the right thing morally and socially and you aren’t a person of interest. That’s still freedom.

Also, another rebuttal is that we are being marketed constantly, but we sign up for that (for the most part) and it actually assists technology progression, which we ironically rely on so much

When it comes to use of Surveillance Systems and Face Recognition Technology by authorities, western media mainly NYT, WSJ be like ” look China is doing this, China bad; Surveillance Systems and Face Recognition usage bad, no privacy, oh no” and then they don’t talk about similar trends in America & European countries. I am not defending what China is doing with this tech, but there is a grand bias how these things are covered by different media houses and editorials.

Back in the day they said “The walls have ears”. Well now they do, as well as eyes, bluetooth and wifi scanners as well.
It’s not just the cameras, if your bluetooth or wifi is on you are being tracked by every Google, Amazon and Apple device. The tech giants have outsourced mass surveillance. If the police have someone on video footage and it’s not clear enough for an identification they will send a geofence warrant to Google who will release the information on everyone who was in the area at that time. Combine that with the fact you have not been caught once by camera, but countless times. There is no issue with accuracy as you are shedding data points every where you go.

I’ve known about this technology for 20+ years now and still don’t get it why people get anxious hearing about it…
If you’re not a criminal and have nothing to hide, the FBI being able to find the streets we take every time we go to the grocery store won’t really hurt us… But I DO wanna help the Police catch all these ANTIFA thugs who burn loot and kill… Agh. People are weird.

This is a ~novel~ good technology to help us fight crime. Not to help the government see where you sleep everyday… Remember January 6? Tell me how on earth they have found all these (1000++) people…?! Yeah. It’s what you think. With ^^^^ technology.

    • Matthew Viramontes

      July 7, 2022 at 1:32 pm

Yes. And it’s worse than that. It’s also legal in the U.S. to film into someone’s house if they have the blinds open. So you could be standing on the sidewalk and film into someone’s house and it’s totally legal. The only places forbidden to film in the U.S. are in bathrooms and in hospitals.

I mean.. unless you’re partaking in illegal activity or have a criminal record, it shouldn’t be that scary. If I was a suspect in a murder, but I wasn’t anywhere near the area, I’d be out the room in no time instead of being interrogated due to cell phone tower pinging and such. They’ve been known to persecute innocent people. I’d think this would help to stop that. Just my two cents

    • Onkel Pappkov

      July 25, 2022 at 4:06 pm

I like your child-like naivety. It’s wonderfully optimistic to think that this somehow reduces wrongful persecution instead of increasing it. I would want my children to grow up with that mindset, knowing things will be okay and there are no bad people.
