The Controversial Climate Tool Funding Real Change | Sandeep Roy Choudhury | TED
If a company plants trees to offset its pollution, is that climate progress — or is it greenwashing? Critics of carbon markets say it’s the latter. But Sandeep Roy Choudhury, who’s spent two decades financing climate projects from rural cookstoves to coastal forests, says the real failure is discouraging companies from even trying. Hear his…

I refuse to play that game today…if you don’t make something clear & say it directly to me & look at me in my eyes I’m not going to waste energy trying to figure you out, read between the lines or read the room….especially if the person doesn’t like me….they are going to have to be uncomfortable & do the difficult thing of telling me to my face….& roll the dice as to what my reaction will be….I think it’s the only way to communicate….too long I’ve had people play games & I just won’t do it at my expense any longer…..

Society rewards stupidity and obedience as pillars of its order. The crowd in the emperor’s procession knows the truth privately—the nakedness is evident to each eye—yet they persist in their delusion because obedience demands it. To acknowledge the truth openly would shatter the fragile edifice of power, which relies on the collective stupor of the obedient. The powerful need the stupid, for stupidity shields them from accountability; it transforms free individuals into a herd, easily led, where each fears to be the first to speak lest they stand alone. To remain silent in the face of rewarded stupidity is to partake in it, to let obedience erode the soul. Let us be the voices that turn private unease into public reckoning, lest society devour itself in its own deceptions.

I prefer to tell the truth, no matter how painful it may be for the other person or myself.
I am autistic and cannot stand deception. To assume that everyone is aware of these unwritten rules is a clear indication that Mr Pinker has no clue what he is talking about.
People like me need clearly communicated standards to follow. I would assume that everyone could benefit from these written standards, except for those who routinely break the rules.

For those who want to double check their blind-spot and any biases that one might have developed passively about Pinker’s takes, check Daniel Schamtenberger’s take on his views, even though in a classic Daniel move, he does it indirectly without name calling.

Double speak and poetry encryption
Poetry can mean many things all at once. The message you get depends on the lense or perspective you view if from. We encrypt to hide the message so it won’t be damaged before it reaches its intended target. Sometimes the target does not exist and will not for decades after the messages are sent.

If I take it that Pinker is being truthful and he is consistent then when he assesses students’ work he must mark what he guesses they mean rather than mark their actual words. By academic standards this would make him incompetent and unprofessional as an examiner, as he himself cannot but know.

I generally love Pinker, but his ending:
“I hope… I don’t have to explain how these norms are currently under threat or what is at stake if we lose them…. It’s so obvious.”
Was a weak message. Specificity and clarity are often substituted by ambiguity when an argument is lacking in substance or when the speaker is too cowardly to stand by his convictions. Can anyone articulate your perception of which norms are at risk of being upended? Only respond if you are capable of steelmanning the opposing viewpoint in good faith.

Steve doesn’t want to believe how serious the world’s problems are, or know why we struggle to stop them. So that final comment of Pinker. You interpret it based on the filter you arrived with. It’s either anti Trump or it’s anti Cancel Culture. And you believe that’s the only possible interpretation because you think that you and Pinker share a set of common knowledge.
@BenTibbettsStudio
