The whole first half is a terrible muddle of logical fallacies and forced correlations.

Besides the fact that the “people” couldn’t even slightly afford coffee nor tea, at least not until very recent years (after WW II, to be clear), every actual factor bound to the development of modern society, economy and technology has been ignored, in favor of “hey, they stopped drinking booze and went for coffee”.

Right, Germany totally was consuming more coffee than beer in the late 1800 until the 3rd Reich.
Or, like for the US in the 20s and the 30s (see “Prohibitionism”), when they started to raise more and more. Disconcerting.

Okay, so… The whole of Europe obviously wasn’t drunk all the time. That’s just demonstrably false (and frankly: has been disproven more than enough times already). The beer that was drunk was usually lower in alcohol than modern beers to begin with. They did *not* give their children ¨hard cider¨ all the time. They also *did* drank water. What do you guys think wells were for?

It’s also highly unlikely Voltaire drank 72 cups of coffee a day. That would mean drinking 3 cups of coffee every hour of the day, including when normal people would be sleeping. Those cups were smaller and the coffee was probably less strong, but not enough to be able to dirnk 72 cups of them in a day.

Marijuana gives you way more cons than pros most of the time. (I am a stoner and smoke at least 2-3 joints a day). But the lung damage is simply undeniable, these days air is harmful because of pollution, but the rule of thumb is that anything that’s not air is bad for your lungs

I would say that being addicted is not worth the benefits. I have been addicted for 10 years, and it has hindered my sleep and my ability to focus throughout the day. Yes I’m alert for that first hour or so, but then get a caffeine crash midday so I have to reach for more; which then negatively effects my sleep. The process is then repeated on a daily basis. Quitting this stuff was the BEST decision I have made. I sleep like a baby and am able to mentally and physically function throughout the day. Quitting caffeine is a b*** but once you do, you never want to go back.

Although a case can be made that caffeine subbed for alcohol, it sounds rather hollow that a society or human culture’s ingenuity is tied, or has to be tied to being drugged up to be successful. In today’s world, better diets (largely) as compared to the old days of society, vitamin supplements should be considered equal fuel to caffeine. With the hugely increased use of prescription drugs, how much of drugs are actually helping culture?

He ignored a lot of small risks in this video. Like heart or mental issue that come with coffee and addiction. Or bladder cancer and irritations or the high short lives bloodpressure spike. And we are getting more and more information the damage bad sleep gives us each year, which coffee stimulates. And that a very big group is not quite good at breaking down caffeine which probably have higher chances of problems like above stated.

Many of the benefits researches are correlational and not direct cause effect. Healthier people drink coffee or are people more healthy because they drink coffee.

Wow. Everyone gives Caffeine a pass. Is it good for you? Well in short bursts yes. In long ones I would have to say no. Missing out on sleep they cover, and yeah it sucks, but much more than you realize. Trying going 2 weeks without and at first it sucks, cause you in withdrawal, but then things do get better, and your faster at what you do. Why? Because you sleep better. There is a trade off and this does not go far enough to describe that.

if you can avoid relying continually on a foreign substance, that’s better than having to be chained to a drink multiple times a day. Nicotine may be more addictive but it’s kind of the same principle. Moderation leads to an overall better life balance in my opinion.

In Brazil drinking coffee is extremely common in all ages but I used to hate it. When I was a child when I got to high school I needed caffeine to get trough the long days but senior year I was so addictive I had extreme stomach issues and had to quit for a while. Now, I only drink because I like the taste and always have it pure black

Bullfuckingshit. Coffee has been responsible for having an inability to focus in a linear way, remember ANYTHING, and make me feel like I’m jacked up on cocaine (very similar stress-rush for me). I’ve quit for the last month, having only herbal tea, and my memory is coming back, I can focus on things for longer without feeling like a drug addict that has a.d.h.d., I have close to no more crazy breakdance-impersonating heart palpitations, and I have substantially better sleep.
OH and as a bonus, I don’t feel nauseous and get as bloated/look 5 months preg and feel desperately hungry 12 minutes after eating too.
I drank a french press in the morning and have been heavily ingesting coffee since I was 15. 28 now.
For anyone out there considering trying it, I recommend it !!

I like how he poses caffeine as the only solution to focus and minimizes the impact on sleep. #EXERCISE has the SAME POSITIVES and actually makes you sleep better. And you don’t risk the effects on your #immunity that is caused by #sleepdeprivation.

Also he talks about the unhealthy American diet as the only option – you could eat vegetables to get those same #antioxidants.

  153. Julius Hamilton

    August 27, 2021 at 11:05 pm

His claims about there being historical periods defined by one drug or another needs pretty hefty support. First of all, an actual correlation between caffeine and “science” must be established, and the concept of “linear thinking” made clearly defined. There was science in Ancient Greece, and there are drunks in modern Europe. Without ruling out contrary possibilities, and seeking counterexamples, the theory could easily be selectively supported, motivated by a confirmation bias.

Then, a testable theory of causation must be put forward. Even if the aforementioned correlation turns out to exist, how do we know what the relationship between the two is, with confidence? Maybe there were factors far beyond caffeine at play in the rise of science in the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. In linking two highly salient, observed events, it becomes too easy to assume without sufficient grounds that they must be connected.

Maybe caffeine did have a role in scientific activity, but we should try to prove that with rigor.

So the beginning implied that coffee *replaced* alcohol as the most common drink and ended this era of people being drunk all the time, but it doesn’t explain how. Coffee requires clean water to brew, so wouldn’t a community need access to clean water (i.e. no longer stuck drinking solely alcohol) BEFORE coffee could become popular in that community?

  181. Horned Melon Productions

    September 3, 2021 at 8:05 am

It would be interesting to compare this to the history of tea in the East, where it was initially closely tied with Buddhist religious classes. The Japanese tea ceremony, for example, can last up to four hours, and doesn’t seem designed to increase productivity (maybe focus, maybe rational thinking). Tea is more popular worldwide than coffee, so it’s arguably a more important case study for caffeine use and how it’s interacted with other historical events in a different time and place than those discussed in this video.

Finish your last cup before 11 am. By the time you hit your REM sleep, the caffeine is out of your body! This video only mentions that 50% caffeine is circulating in our bloodstream even after 4-5 hours. But it doesn’t tell you what’s the best time window to consume and how long does it stay overall.
It’s around 12-14 hours. Say if you sleep at 10.30 pm, you are likely to reach your REM sleep around 3 – 3.30 ish. Now deduct 14 hours. Your last cup must be around that time! So you get the benefits and negate the side effects.

Michael Pollan is one of the most Anthropocentric Human on the Planet.
When you listen to him Justify any Addiction or the use of psychedelics in treating the human condition, he is just admitting that we need these harmful crutches just to stay alive and Flourish in a world of over consumption.
He’s wrong and continues to support the Cult of Carnisim and Addiction.
In the end Capitalism wins and He feels that’s a Benefit that out ways the drawbacks.
Perhaps he will wake up or fail to wake up, Literally, and one day and we can collectively use his body as compost and grow some Healthy plants that sustains life instead for reducing it.
    Obviously Not a Fan!

I drink caffeine every day and some might say I’m addicted, but what’s the benefit in giving it up? Humans naturally need stimulation

Having said that, the problem with the caffeine is the same problem with amphetamine. You develop a tolerance and instead of improving productivity, focus, etc, you’re just drinking to avoid the withdrawal symptoms, which in my case is always a painful headache. So i find it strange this video tries to credit caffeine for making people more productive and focused, in my experience the tolerance develops very quickly and you no longer get that benefit. It’s the same as other stimulants.

Einstein didn’t use caffeine. His teas and coffees were caffeine free. Also recent studies are showing that it inhibits creativity, which you’d expect since creativity is very often non-linear, so the ability to do both is crucial for great thinkers.

Decaf is a good way to wean yourself off regular coffee and it usually contains almost similar amounts of antioxidants as regular coffee, although it may be up to 15% lower. The main antioxidants in regular coffee and decaf are very effective at neutralizing reactive compounds called free radicals. So if your diet is deficient, then coffee is probably helping a bit.

However, while coffee may be high in antioxidants, so is broccoli, spinach, carrots and potatoes, all of which are high in antioxidants. And so are artichokes, cabbage, asparagus, avocados, beetroot, radish, lettuce, sweet potatoes, squash, pumpkin, collard greens and kale. Using lots of spices in cooking is also good.

Since switching to decaf, I sleep much better at nights. And I also don’t wake up feeling like a zombie or experience states of extreme lethargy through various parts of the day. This used to be a huge problem for me. And furthermore, if I go without decaf for a few days, I’m not hanging out for it.

The problem with Americans is they don’t understand how to use/play/eat/drink/fight in moderation.

Everything is overdone and that’s the problem, not caffeine, not pizza etc. Lack of moderation and understanding of food is the problem.

This is stupid misinformation. A dumb meme I’m tired of hearing.

    1) People in the Middle Ages did drink fresh water, it was not riddled with disease except in cities.

    2) Medieval beer was far less alcoholic than today, it would take an immense quantity to actually get buzzed let along drunk.

    3) The Arabs had coffee for many centuries before Europe, and they never underwent an Enlightenment nor did they break the normal daily cycle determined by the Sun.

    4) This implies heavily that there was no technological or scholarly advancement during the Medieval period, but anyone who knows the history of science knows that the Scholastic synthesis was a huge advancement over Ancient thought and was a huge factor in the Renaissance of the 12th century. This is a period *utterly ignored* by popular history, but professional historians know it well.

This is so easy for anyone with a little bit of education in history to debunk it’s ridiculous and sad how far it’s traveled.
