Black queer people were instrumental in black liberation, but not black queer culture per se. That’s a mostly, if not wholly, an American invention. There have been elements of black culture that can be traced back to Africa, that could be considered queer according to modern sensibilities. But there’s never been a case where queerness has ever largely characterized African or black subcultures. There just isn’t enough historical precedent for that. (Or none that I’m aware of.) Queerness was tolerated and accepted but was relegated to the fringes of most African societies or capitalized on for specific functions, eg. Gay bodyguards and eunuch servants for female members of royal families. Outside of those contexts, it’s never really been a thing for black people culturally until our identities got wrapped up in American and eurocentric societal contexts

A lot of the time people talk like this, they are only referring to American History, which is just dumb. They’re acting like American history is the only history worth talking about.

This video is like a nice tall glass of 🧊 cold water. It’s so much truth being told. the reactionaries in the comment section cant take, like at all!! 😅😅 proud of the speaker as well, you did very well telling our real Tea ☕️, not only is this video highly informative, but it sets the record straight on a lot of ish.

Despite the blatant anti-blackness and constant leaching off/whitewashing of black queer culture, mannerisms, and phrases by non-black queer people, queer culture was created and is still maintained by Black American LGBT.

Without us, the black community cannot move forward
Without us, the queer community cannot move forward

Black queer ppl are the source to the art of drag, queer political organizing, ballroom, and all the culture that anti-black queer people love to indulge in and falsely claim as their culture but not using 1 ounce of privilege to dismantle systems of oppression that black, brown, and yellow counterparts face

    We the moment!

Fascinating – so much history has been swept under the carpet. The few well-known queer Black icons are just the tip of a grand iceberg of legacy – a legacy which extends across cultures worldwide. For example, as a straight white musician on the other side of the world in New Zealand, I am forever grateful for rock music, at least partly the legacy of pioneering musician Little Richard. How many equally important names are unknown to the many?

  36. Andy Cordy

    February 3, 2023 at 8:24 am

Just to hear these histories is near miraculous in the context of the suppression of Black History more broadly. I am delighted to witness this champion of research and applaud the effort that has been made in bringing these cultural tributaries into the mainstream of history.

One thing troubled me though, that a great man like James Baldwin was not sited among the names in this all too brief exploration of Black, Queer History. I am so ignorant of the state of contemporary Black history presentation that I really need to see a broader perspective. Queer culture has always focussed on the visible, the show, the attention seeking behaviour. What of life for those who did not dress in camp outfits but tried to challenge the oppression with their intellect, their art. Is their effort not of value in the broader, all erasing sweep of history which leaves only the most doggedly persistent, the most flagrant and uncomfortable for historians to find and faithfully represent?

I’m sorry, with all due respect to the talk itself, I just can’t take someone that “dresses” like that seriously. You can show off your culture through fashion without being virtually half-naked on a speech stage. This isn’t the time nor the place to wear something so vulgar. Same reason why don’t show up in a classroom or an office wearing a swimsuit. And just imagine the outrage if it was a woman instead…

@Hubert Nicolas At least I made the effort of listening anyway, I’d be curious to know how many people simply didn’t click for the thumbnail alone. I’m technically LGBTQ+ too, and the way these people present themselves is exactly why I and many others want nothing to do with them at best. It’s so unnecessary, yet here we are.
