How Apple and Disney Can Save Muppet Vision 3D
No mixed reality headset has done this before, but CNET’s Bridget Carey and Scott Stein make the case why Disney’s experience with VR and partnership with Apple make it possible to use Vision Pro to preserve Jim Henson’s final project, Muppet Vision 3D. The attraction is set to close at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park…

If Apple can spend billions over a decade developing a car, it can afford to continue to develop the Apple Vision Pro. This is a product worth developing and getting into the hands of the public as well as businesses. There are so many applications for this product.

I think there’s 1 thing that could save the vision pro: life VR sports season passes. If they were to set up a live VR 360 3D camera on the sidelines of sports games and sell season passes to stream the games I think it could be HUGE! They could include a single team’s season pass (of your choice) for free when you buy a vision pro. This could be a complete game changer. Think NFL, NBA, or MLB games live in VR.

Love it! Between Apple and Disney, they would be creatively irresponsible to NOT take this on. Sadly they have become so profit and woke driven, that they are largely blind to proper creative value. e.g. She Hulk, Acolyte, Obi Wan, Mando S03 — the list is long! Until they awake from their slumber of self-image worship, they are sadly incapable of seeing creative paths worth taking.

Similiar things have already been done. you can watch retired disneyland ride Adventures Thru Inner Space (guests are shrunk down and look back up into a huge eye looking into a microscope, a scientific ride where atoms and molecules are shown) in the meta quest

Disney could have a theater where everyone gets an AVP and can select from a list of VP movies, including this Muppet 3D one. Just a big room with seats and everyone watches a 4 minute interactive movie. Possibilities are endless.
@TimothyCollins
December 6, 2024 at 1:30 pm
What I never quite figured out is why nobody has tried the next step in VR – 3D movies that are immersive. It’s an idea Broadway has done for awhile now – think Tony and Tina’s wedding or such where the audience wanders from room to room with the actors doing their scenes around them and the story can be experinced in different ways encouraging repeat viewings. No idea why VR headsets haven’t yet had that type of movie pop up yet.
@jessestone117

This sounds like a perfect application of a device like the AVP. Love the suggestion! I hope this happens

Apple, a consumer technology company, introduced the Apple Vision Pro, a luxury product rather than a consumer item. Its high price point falls short of the value it offers compared to its competitors. Google’s products outperform the Apple Vision Pro in this regard. This is one aspect of Apple’s misguided approach to innovation, prioritizing the creation of the most expensive product over practicality. The Mac mini, on the other hand, will be their best-seller due to its value for money, with many individuals purchasing multiple units. The Disney Muppet stuff is a joke. Who is Disney aimed at? Kids! I would never buy a Vision Pro for my kids! A very misguided strategy.

When the Vison Pro came out, I said it would be Apple’s biggest bust since the Newton. I was right. VR headsets are never going to be anything more than a novelty and this one cost way too much. Even the PSVR2 didn’t sell. No one wants to wear these stupid things on their faces.

I think Bridget is VERY onto something when she mentions the value of these devices for reliving “spatial” memories later on. However, I think the iPhone “spatial videos” are underwhelming compared to what is actually possible. So, I think what we REALLY need to see is innovation and adoption of more advanced volumetric video capture at the consumer level. Imagine being able to record the full scene of your family Christmas and then actually being able to move around in the virtual playback of the video, looking at the scene from every angle. I think the secret will be smaller VR180 cameras that you set up in 2 or 3 places around a room on tripods. The footage will be combined in post to create truly volumetric “holographic” video that you can view LIFE SIZE all around you, that you can actually move around in. That’s what I’m waiting for.
