The Haitian Revolution included a g3n0cide against White colonists, and as a result the southern political elite collectively dropped a deuce in their pants and reinforced their stance against abolition. Even the poor southern farmer who otherwise might have been accepting of abolition were scared that the same would happen to them if Black Americans were emancipated.

He didn’t mention that the colonists categorically refused representation in the English parliament. They insisted that any taxes must be levied by their own colonial legislatures. That’s why King George refused their demand

I’m extremely dubious of any political scientists who act like they can’t offend mein fuhrer. Like. That was weird. And uhhhh I’m pretty certain there were revolutions in Asian between 4000 BCE and the establishment of the new Roman “democracy” so again. I’m extremely dubious of this guy, he sounds like a very careful shill.

  21. @Wittynametag

    November 18, 2025 at 7:52 pm

The impact of “Glorious Revolution” of 1688 feels overlooked by those outside of the UK and Ireland, it ensured that the British King was answerable to Parliament, ending centuries of unrest around the issue, established many laws and rights and democratic ideas that were the bases of future revolutions like the French and the American, and lead to the British Empire becoming the super power that it was.
I think this is probably because there was so much happening in terms of European warfare at the time and it can’t be as simplified as the other two, as well as French and Americans wanting to focus on the idea they came up with their ideas all by themselves, and definitely wouldn’t have copied the British.

He first talks about the slavery in Ottoman Empire, then goes on saying that Mamluks overthrew the Sultan’s rule, which makes it sound like they overthrew the Ottoman rule, but they actually overthrew the Ayyubid dynasty, even before the Ottomans existed as a beyliq.

Out of pure curiosity, how does China’s economic slowdown compare to America’s? We’re also experiencing falling birth rates with a slowing labor force. In fact, our economic growth is based on AI optimism, but outside of this, the economy is rather stagnant. And we’re just now starting to see this bubble burst. Coupled with a slash in spending, high tax rates, and tariffs (without any major companies planning to build factories in America), it seems like we’re putting ourselves in a worse position than China. Just a curious history student here!! Thank you 🙂

8:51 this proves this dude has NO IDEA what he’s talking about. Xi Jinping’s popularity was never as high as it is right now, China’s homelessness and unemployment rates decay every single year for the last decade, and their overall economic statistics are on a fast increase for the last 15 years non-stop. The US, on the other hand…

  52. @arthurmont-morency5027

    November 20, 2025 at 8:47 am

It’s very symptomatic of the current polytical status US is in right now that the “revolution expert” Wired selected spreads this level of misinformation and share the exact same ideas towards revolutions the rulling classes pushed forward for the last 50 years. It’s true what people outside the US say: There are no left wing ideas in the US whatsoever, not even on the academic levels.

Great interview, learned a lot! But I have to say, the comparison of the Bastille to modern events felt like a real stretch. The contexts, causes, and goals are just worlds apart. It kinda diminishes what a true revolution actually entails. Still, loved hearing the historian’s perspective on everything else! 🤔📚

There was a US-backed military coup in Brazil in 1964. The armed forces called it a “revolution”. Brazilians know it was a violent power grab by the armed forces with the support of the catholic church, land owners and economic elites.

Ironically pre-Reform Act parliament(as anyone who watched BLACK ADDER 3 knows) didn’t represent the British people either. You had rotten boroughs, basically empty old areas with maybe 7 or even 1 voter having as much or MORE power than populated areas; some like Manchester didn’t have ANY representation till the 19th century. So when they wanted to vote like Englishmen, this was an idealized view on their part; MOST Englishmen could not vote then.

  101. @rev.rachel

    November 22, 2025 at 10:23 pm

I’m fascinated by how many people in the comments are viscerally opposed to the comparison between Jan 6th and the storming of the Bastille. There are certainly obvious differences, which many have pointed out here, but I think a lot of people are missing the point of his comparison. He’s highlighting the similarities that include 1. a lot of people storming a large government building with apparently violent intent, and 2. a lot of people *feeling* like they were standing up for the little guy, the disenfranchised, the poor, the silenced, etc.—even if in truth the Jan 6th rioters were aligned with the people currently in power who were trying very desperately not to lose that power.

Revolutions are not all inherently morally good or bad, and I suspect a lot of the comments here are assuming that they’re always a moral good, and then reflecting on the comparison based on whether the commenter thought Jan 6th was good or bad.

Mr. Goldstone’s understanding of the Iranian revolution is, to be quite generous, fuzzy. Iran was literally invaded by the West TWICE during the 20th century (during both World Wars, despite its neutrality). The invasions led to over a million Iranians starving to death. Also, he seems to imply that Mohammad Reza Shah was installed by the CIA in the fifties, despite the fact that he had been Shah since his father’s exile in the 40s. Yes, Operation Ajax basically granted him dictatorial powers and rolled back a half-century’s worth of Persian democratic regulations and previous attempts to defang the monarchy’s absolute power, but still. His broad-stroked presentation of how the Shah’s regime unraveled over time shows the fact that he is, despite the video title, not looking at the matter through the optics of a historian.

I’m sorry but thinking the Chinese would revolt en-masse in the next 10-20 years is an absolute batshit insane take. In terms of access to basic needs they seem to be doing almost better than us at this point. This guy is a hack.

US and France, whose democracies are similar in age, are falling apart. I’ve wondered if this is part of something larger ending the Western world as we know it

I experienced the Nicaraguan Revolution, I was in El Salvador’s revolution and saw the Zapatistas taking over South Mexico. January Sixers were just laughable hecklers. I hope their grandchildren never have the shame of learning that their grandparents were on January 6th.

The COVID pandemic was a mess is the US explicitly because the power was in the executive’s hands and the orange one did nothing.
