The haptics are essentially a speaker. Soundwaves are caused by vibrations, haptic motors vibrate. The difference is modern haptics can vibrate at higher frequencies than older haptics. Hence the Xbox controller goes “BRRR” while the Steam controller and Nintendo HD Rumble can play tunes. The dualsense can do it too
