What would be cheaper, the $500 ARMac mini + $100 dev account or the release Mac mini with “apple silicon”

    • Channing Chea

      June 23, 2020 at 11:33 pm

That developer ARMac might technically be cheaper, but it doesn’t have the same i/o as the normal Mac mini. So you might want to hold off anyway.

Currently on 2013 MBP 13″, I have waited since 2015 for a usable laptop upgrade. No more. I am buying 10th gen Intel today, and will wait for second gen ARM from Apple, after first adopters smooth out the corners.

I’d buy one now if you plan of playing PC games running bootcamp and windows 10 on a mac. Once they go arm, the games will be almost nonexistent even for ARM windows.

The difference between this jump, and the previous one from power pc to Intel is massive. When apple switched to Intel, the x86 processors were so powerful they could emulate powerpc with ease. ARM on the other hand already struggles to run a full windows experience, let alone run advanced x86 applications. Apple will no doubt make it work somehow eventually, but if you’re someone who’s buying a MacBook pro or above for heavy use, it makes little sense to move to ARM or wait for it in the foreseeable future.

    June 25, 2020 at 12:08 am

Besides Mac Mini, I bet you there will be a 14″ MacBook with ARM chip by the end of the year!

  45. Mark Job

    June 25, 2020 at 12:15 am

*OMG ! OF course ! YES ! Do buy the latest Intel based CPU MacBook Pro 16, as it is 1. The fastest Production Consummer Laptop in the world for Digital Content Creation currently, and 2. Catalina is currently the end of a Mac OS which is a very mature platform right now. Do you really want to wait, and take a full frontal dive into the great unknown, investing in a new OS and a new (unproven) hardware CPU solution ? New platforms often have big bugs to work out, while proven systems work better for mission critical work.*

As a software developer, I am now a bit stumped on what to do. Kind of odd that Apple’s announcement was at WWDC, a developer event, and there didn’t seem to be a lot of direction for me. My concern is losing not only Xcode (for a while at the most), but .NET Core, node and tons of other tools, compilers and other things I use. I was just coming up on wanting to get a new, high-end Macbook Pro. Now I am thinking the best course of action may be to go ahead and upgrade and then plan on getting a lower-end ARM Mac (maybe a Mac Mini like discussed) to use as both an app target and also to dip my toes into the ARM Mac world and see if I can survive in it. Not sure what other developers using Macs are thinking about doing.

  47. Elon Fucking Musk

    June 25, 2020 at 12:49 am

Nah don’t wait. If you need a new laptop buy one. If you buy one now you know exactly what you’re getting. You don’t know if the next MacBook will be a 12 inch MacBook, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. There’s rumors but it’s just rumors at this point. If you want a specific kind of MacBook you don’t know how long you’d be waiting. What if they only release a low end MacBook Pro and don’t update the high end MacBook that just came out 2 months ago? What if the next MacBook with ARM has recalls due to some random issue? Maybe it could be a 14 inch micro led MacBook with 120fps but we don’t know what’s in store. Better to buy a good machine knowing it’ll perform well and be stable for next 4-5 years for sure. But if your MacBook is running fine and it’ll be fine for the next 2 years then yeah wait it out. Intel macbooks may be cheaper later on and you’ll always have that option a year or 2 from now

    June 25, 2020 at 10:33 am

I have the 2018 Mac Mini Core i7 with 32GB of Ram and a Vega 56 eGPU. The mini does run very hot and fans kick in when I play “8K 60fps videos” from Youtube and it starts to thermal throttle affecting the playback. Can see the thermal throttling happening in Intel Power Gadget App. So I’m very interested in what an ARM Mini will run like. I won’t be getting any first gen Arms until I see the performance comparisons though. Hope its worth the wait.

The question is: what are they going to price the arm based macs?

    • Christopher Lochan

      June 25, 2020 at 7:56 pm

EXACTLY. poor ppl want macs too! 🙂

  59. Laurent Bourgon

    June 25, 2020 at 2:58 pm

However, Apple clearly said it is planned for at least 2 years. Currently, developers can purchase a Mac mini with an ARM processor, but it is not the final version. Then there’s the problem with first gen, it is always recommended to wait a few months/next generation. Also, Apple clearly said Intel and ARM will live together for a few years (just like PowerPC and Intel a few years ago). By the time they won’t support Intel anymore, it will be because ARM is stable/well made and the Intels aren’t working great anymore. So if you have a relatively new laptop, yes you should wait, but it doesn’t mean you can’t replace your laptop now if you need it.

  61. Wayne C.

    June 25, 2020 at 4:11 pm

To showcase and emphasis the difference in efficiency, putting the chip on MacBooks first makes more sense since battery life for a laptop that pushes past say 15 hours would be a game changer compared to the news that a Mac mini is now running more efficiently. Then again, they might come out with both 🙂

  62. Anurag

    June 25, 2020 at 5:15 pm

getting thrown out of house of windows would be late but deathbed of intel is ready 😀 😀 Windows and every OS will be going for ARM RISC version chips no doubt.

  63. TzzSmk

    June 25, 2020 at 5:34 pm

I’d politely argue the attitude is probably wrong,
Apple Developer Kit (ARM Mac Mini) is basically running same CPU chip as current iPad Pro, and (therefore) also does NOT have any Thunderbolt, so if there are people who haven’t bought iPad Pro and are considering MacBook Pro instead, then they would be most likely disappointed with ARM-based MacBook anyway,
Apple boasts relatively easy and quick migration of the apps, but as a matter of fact most complex audio/video/graphics software coded for Intel uses some more complex libraries and code, which definitely cannot be recompiled within few days,
emulated environment during transition years is inevitable, but seeing Microsoft’s Surface Pro X being basically unusable with Intel/AMD-based apps since October 2019 and almost year later there’s zero changes to that situation, I wouldn’t expect MacOS devs doing any different, unless they’re already offering iOS/iPadOS apps (of which most are not really aimed towards MacBook Pro “power users” anyway)
also Apple hasn’t mentioned anything about hardware support, drivers etc.. so if camera, audio interface, video capture card, external graphics card, optical drive, thunderbolt external drive etc.. won’t work (at least initially) then there’s no advantage to the new tech either

Just don’t buy a Mac, there are the worst computers on the world, slow, low compatibility, memory get full of updates you cannot delete never at least you reset the computer and lose all your info.

My last three computers where Mac, I really expected they will improve in something but they didn’t.

For the price of one of those metal heating machines, you can buy an Alienware, an Omen, a Predator and for the same price you have more memory, more RAM, more compatibility, better graphics and a lot of stuff you will never have just for paying excessive prices only for a bitten apple.

I’m pretty worried that buying an intel based Mac now would suck since Apple would only on developing and supporting the new ARM Macs, especially after the two year transition. Would buying an Intel based Mac now mean that I would still get the support for it in the years to come?
