      Stating facts does not affect partiality. EVs are all that matter moving forward. Faced with a decision to be bankrupt or get on board, most intelligent individuals and business will choose to get on board rather than cease to exist. Many thought, will go bankrupt holding onto fever dreams of the past that they still wish were true. It happens in every disruption.

      @TheLastMoccasin It’s a fallacy this is better. It’s being promoted by people who want to make EVs work at all cost. You could have argued every plane would have been a Concorde by now back in 1970. It didn’t happen. They weren’t practical. EVs laughably are not. Everyone I know with an EV hates it. People shouldn’t be laughing at you for driving something that’s supposed to be the future. You need to stop believing everything you read in tech blogs.

    They’re not safer in a crash. The battery makes the car much heavier. Velocity+Weight=Not safer

    Thanks for suggesting. Car is meticulously maintained, it has about 53,000 miles on it. Everything is tip top, the trunk lid is massively heavy, it pops open but the struts would have to be Workhorse Bilsteins to lift it all the way up. I don’t know if that was in the design because of it being a hardtop/convertible but I will have it checked out. Thanks!

    My issue with electric is thermal runaway during or after a wreck. IIHS needs to do a better job at testing that side of accidents.

    Actually, due to the battery pack base is directly under the occupant seats… that rigid platform should offer a good amount of protection from most mixes of crash. We will then need to look at ways of keeping and restraining the occupants into their seats and look at whiplash (from not just the rear but front & sides. Regardless, in all scenarios, avoidance it always the best option. 🙂

    You mean 4 1/2 tons. These SUVs should never have been allowed on the road. Battery technology isn’t close yet = plug in hybrid only. (Petrol companies are great at marketing)

    But regarding post crash fires ICE vs electric. You can’t put out an electric battery fire. After 10,000 gallons if you are lucky enough that it stops burning, it could spontaneously erupt again at any time. Also, outside of a collision, ICE cars don’t spontaneously combust. EVs can / have / do.

    My Audi A4 and Tesla M3 are the same exterior dimensions, the M4 weighs 400lbs more. I speculate that part of the equation not covered in this video is that its easier to design crash zones without an engine or transmission.

    You seem to be forgetting that cars in general and EVs especially have increasingly better collision avoidance tech. We could soon be at a point where vehicle crashes are a rarity.

    The difference between ICE’s fire and EV’s fire is the gases… EV have a very toxic gases, and mutch, mutch hard to extinguish

    Don’t ignore the absence of a huge, red hot engine being absent in a head-on collision. Also the battery skateboard design reduces side impact intrusions. Focusing on weight alone isn’t accurate.

    instant torque, proper suspension, low center of gravity and the moment of inertia makes it possible to avoid all accidents
    (battery cars have deflection zones where ice cars have an engine – softens the crash forces for the receiving end as well )

    I think for fire in the test they are not open circuit. I mean when car is off the battery is isolated in result no cutting cable to make short. Maybe I am wrong

    Call me suspicious but did the IIHS fully charged those EVs before crashing it?
    Did they use vehicles bought from a dealer instead of the auto makers supplying it?

      I don’t an answer for the first question, but the IIHS does buy these vehicles directly from dealers. Mystery shoppers are what keep automakers in the dark, so they can’t provide an exceptionally great vehicle just for testing.

    In addition to vehicle crashes, I am very concerned about pedestrian crashes, which are on the rise. I anticipate that — because of the added weight/speed of the EVs — we may see even more severe incidents.

      There are now pedestrian safety requirements for all cars, which is part of hood and front end design. Many of the new cars have an active system which will tilt the rear of the hood up to a specific angle upon initial contact with a person.

    This is news, there are alot of ICE based cars that are very safe as well. I still worry about long term batteries lasting. I’d never buy a new car, 2-4 years old is my range, as they drop in price a lot during that time.

    Battery pack can cost more then the whole car
    down the road your going to be spending more money on a battery then on gas down the road . due to every battery has a life span . no matter who makes them.
    i really don’t see the logic behind them . we not in star fleet yet . heck we can’t even fix the problem’s between nations .

    You missed Tesla’s big safety advantage: the battery is at the bottom of the vehicle. Thus, its center of gravity is extremely low and makes it nigh impossible to flip.

    I’m curious about the fatality rate for the person involved in an ev accident that’s not in a ev. Does that rate double since the weight of the ev they’re involved with is usually double?

      The weight of an EV is not double the weight of a gas car. For example one of the best selling EVs out there (Tesla Model 3) weighs the same as it’s competing models from BMW, Mercedes, Audi.

    What kind of test dummies are they using? I read that there is an issue with them being representative of non “average males”, like female body types, resulting in unsafe vehicle designs for women.

    You kinda covered the why they’re not seeing the failures in their tests. 40MPH in a very controlled environment, with relatively large targets and impact points, none of which really come that close to the batteries. How many of these real world crashes with thermal runaway or battery failure are happening at significantly higher speeds, even hitting smaller objects with far smaller impact points. Curbs, center dividers, random road debris that couldn’t be avoided making a direct impact with battery housing compromising its integrity. They also need to start doing some EV to EV tests, this is going to become more commonplace; Especially until full autonomy.
