The second-generation $100 Nest Hub resembles its predecessor, but a new Soli chip can keep track as you toss and turn throughout the night. The new Nest Hub also has light, sound and temperature sensors to take several factors into account that might affect your sleep. The motion-sensing Soli chip uses radar instead of a camera and allows the new Nest Hub to respond to your gestures.

So basically, there isn’t a good reason to upgrade to the new one if you have the original Nest hub? 😒

And how much is it going to cost

  4. Skullcrusher_1

    March 16, 2021 at 6:54 pm

The Nest hub already has sunrise alarms. If that’s the reason to upgrade….don’t.

Google: People don’t trust us, and learning to cover the cameras
Also Google: Putting in sensors so people don’t know they are being tracked, and saying it’s for “sleeping” so they won’t get worries in a breakdown video

Bruh, the Nest Hub does not have a camera, and Google already promised in an official statement that your sleep info is stored on your Nest Hub NOT on any of their servers, so none of your info is shared with them. IDK about you but I kinda trust Google in that aspect. You should learn a little more about the Google Soli chip on the Nest Hub, so you can get what I am saying. The Soli chip just monitors you sleeping patterns and your respiratory behaviour during sleep and reports them back to you the next morning. None of that info is shared with Google at all.

No, I was not paid to type this.
No, I am not a Google fanboy.

Its the most information that can be gathered without a traditional camera. Everything else seems to be software. Not worth an upgrade or even purchase imo.

Google would know when you in your deep sleep,
then unlock your smart door lock, turn off your nest door bell and come steal ice-cream from your samsung smart hub fridge.

I fall asleep with a small television playing low. Will that television interfere with the nest hubs efforts to track my sleep?

1:00 I don’t like this vague explanation. Is it sending some waves that bounce of me and go back to the device – like a normal radar? In such case: Is it a good idea to be exposed to those waves the entire night – every night? I’m not sure. Or maybe it’s just listening for the ambient noise and trying to figure out something just based on that? In such case I doubt it’s effective. But you lost me at the word “subscription” anyway.

      @Mike R I don’t wear any watch to bed.

    • Micah Johnson

      March 17, 2021 at 1:24 am

@Ninja Nerd Student Point is a lot of people do wear apple watches and what’s the difference? Nothing, they track metrics just the same if you think they are big on privacy that maybe true but the other truth is they still collect data. Even the new updates pixels just got in google fit are as accurate as the apple watch series six, even a medical grade heart rate monitor. For them to be able to do this without wearing anything, is great! People aren’t looking at it big enough though. It would be able to detect heart abnormalities and alert emergency services of heart attacks. Even sharing problems your having with your doctor would be easy.

Oh what I would love is for the devices to track where you are inside the house to move audio between rooms. I could see this great sleep tracking technology also see when you’ve left the room and are now closer to another speaker and it could pause and resume or blend the audio into a new room and watch for habits like do you go to the bathroom for three seconds and then leave the bathroom back to the bedroom for 20 minutes. If so it could help anticipate where that audio should be piped.

  37. Bagha Shams

    March 17, 2021 at 12:20 pm

I spend about 10 waking minutes in my bed area per day. To dedicate a nest display to this area would be just a waste, unless I bought this device solely for the sleep tracking

It’s a cool feature I guess but if I can find a Gen1 for less than $60.00 The sleep feature is not enough to justify me spending the extra money.

now if the local device can still show the clock when internet is down and handle a few basic things locally I’d pay the extra for that:
