Matter isnt Google’s. It’s a standard developed by all the major home automation companies. Amazon, Apple, ZigBee, etc.

I pre-ordered the Nest Wifi Pro 2-pack for $299 despite how hideous looking they are.

You’ll find the setup easy, so will hackers. Basic firewall with no protection for iot devices etc. Good luck🤞

I’m still not understanding why anyone with a Nest Wired Doorbell gen 1 (like me) would buy the wired gen 2. I was hoping for significant upgrades from the gen 1 but can’t see anything better about it. Resolution is actually lower. Am I missing something?

I think Google wants to apply the same concept as their phones and show how well image quality can be with software enchantments is my take away from it. Also it may have better processing and connection capabilities as well.

The new doorbell also has on device image recognition so it can send alerts to your phone at a faster rate. It also has 3 hours of on device event recording so it can continue recording even when your internet is down. Lastly the FOV is different. It trades some of the horizontal angle in favor of more vertical viewing angle. This can help with seeing packages that are lower and closer to the camera. Now the value of these changes will vary from person to person so to some people these are going to be worthy of an upgrade.

Cheaper materials, poorer performance and loss of compatibility with the Nest app…but hey, modern aesthetic?👍

    • Micah Johnson

      October 7, 2022 at 12:32 am

@Jacques Cheaper yes but better for the planet, also do you own one or just assume performance is poor cause in real world use it could be fine. No compatibility with the Nest App isn’t a big deal, to each their own. Everything is switching to the Google home app which is not only getting a redesign but starting to become more functional than the Nest app you can write your own scripts for routines. And the matter standard is coming as well.

I have the battery doorbell work fine..the only difference is the 24/recording everyone was crying about and u have to subscribe to the nest aware plus for $12 a month to use the feature..google really stuck it to u on that one 😆

    No multi gig ports=fail

      Not everyone needs multigig

    • Michael Maxime

      October 7, 2022 at 8:43 am

@04_Ruiza Tanedy the problem is they are calling it Pro. But it doesn’t have Pro hardware.

    • robert Tsmith

      October 7, 2022 at 1:42 pm

who needs multi gig ports? Most home use ISPs don’t even utilize speeds that are faster than your WiFi speeds.
Fact is PRO” is just a term now for “better than original”. The majority of their target market either doesn’t need more than one port and/or doesn’t want wires showing, they use the one port and a switch under the table/shelf to hide everything.

    • Michael Maxime

      October 7, 2022 at 4:50 pm

@robert Tsmith anyone who is using internet that goes over 1gig. Google fiber is up to 2gigs.

Higher than 1gig internet will be very common in the next few years. This is a 2 year old, then obsolete, router at best. But maybe buying the next gen Google router every couple of years is what they are trying to achieve anyway

    • robert Tsmith

      October 7, 2022 at 8:08 pm

@Michael Maxime I get that, but most people (googles target market) don’t use that much data at one time, and if they do they are already looking well outside this devices price range. If you are speed junkies you won’t even look at this device (or any others that google puts out) anyway, or any routers for that matter right now. If it’s speed that determines your worth, just wait for WiFi 7 to come out next year. This device is a cheap all in one solution for most people, it includes an enormous amount of connected device support (200) for smart homes, easy set up, included security (because you know most people never keep up with router security), and large range foot print. Again, it’s not for power users or speed demons.

Glad I saw this review. That lack of a multi-gig port is really disappointing

I swear their head of design has the worst tastes. These things look like something that you would find in a clown house. Looks like Amazon, Sonos and Apple are still winning in the design department

It’s not practical for 85% of people who’d like a video doorbell. Sucks to be an enthusiast.

No backwards compatibility is a no no for current Google Nest WiFI & Google Wifi customers looking to upgrade.

    • Shift4g

      October 7, 2022 at 7:18 pm

Knowing this, they could have done existing customers a solid by giving them a discount, allowing for trade-in of some sort, or just making the units use the old protocols if you have unsupported hardware in the mix.

They’re leaving a lot of people out to dry.

I think the Wifi Pro is meant to be an affordable option for a 6E router, of which there aren’t many right now. There’s higher end 6E routers that have multi-gig and other features for spec nerds

They probably removed the assistant from the router so they can sell it on Amazon
