My 15′ F-150 5.0 extended cab 4wd is closer to 5k, crazy how hefty and quickly trucks have grown.

  7. amigajoe

    November 5, 2022 at 1:34 pm

We need trucks with 150 mile electric range for all day-to-day driving, but also a range extender generator to ensure that people don’t use towing as an excuse to Not go electric.

    • ALMX5DP

      November 5, 2022 at 2:39 pm

Yeah that would be pretty cool, though I’m always thinking about the complexity and weight that type of system might add.

    • amigajoe

      November 5, 2022 at 5:16 pm

@ALMX5DP GM’s did it for about eight years with the Chevy VOLT, and it worked great. (My mom doesn’t drive a ton, but she owned a VOLT for a year and she only filled her tank once.

    • Parashar Krishnamachari

      November 5, 2022 at 9:17 pm

With current tech, and given the size of a pickup truck in general, 150 miles for regular drivinv isn’t hard at all. Heck 150 miles of range while towing its max rated load is quite doable, I’d say.

Did we ever think pickup trucks would retail for over a hundred grand at some point?😐 These prices are absolutely insane for something most people will never do heavy work with. These trucks will be covering mall parking lots, youth soccer teams, etc…

GM’s upcoming line up is really impressive. Hits all the spots buyers’ need and want. Im looking to get the Equinox EV hopefully they really stick to that $30k base price and not a bait and switch like the Ford Lightning

    • amigajoe

      November 6, 2022 at 8:52 pm

I hope so too, but I think it will be too tempting to price it at $34,000 and end up saying ‘Around $30k after $3,750 Fed rebate / discount’.

They’ll just blame it on inflation.

Even though the whole time idiots like yourself did “their weird thing” to try to squash it all. Tesla is the only manufacturer to reach 30% margins on their cars (while all others practically lose money on their EVs)…which, whether you or I like the switchover or not, is definitely happening right before our eyes. Just glad I bet on the right side. Sucks for you bud.

My supercruise is terrible vs the model 3. I use it on the freeway for about 10 miles to work and back, and I have to reset it several times a day. A few different things trip it up that shouldn’t, like the shadow from an overpass.

“Less then 4.5 seconds”. Just like the horsepower which Chevy increased by 90HP. The 0-100km speed will change to. Ford lightning is doing it in 4seconds I think right now. My guess is Chevy Silverado Ev and the Sierra Ev will be 3.75 seconds or so

I applaude GM and auto makers for making EV… even though it is very odd GM has two almost identical trucks. Also it cracks me up with American’s obsessions with massive vehicles! If you look around there is a single driver! Compared to when I was in S. America these trucks are gigantic… one of these massive manly trucks almost ran me off the road this morning because I guess driving 74 on the freeway is not enough! Happy manning!

    • N C

      November 6, 2022 at 4:42 pm

It cracks me up even more, when people confuse, those living in South America with real Americans 😉

FWIW Americans love compact sized pickups too, such as the .Ford Maverick. Which will have BEV versions. And there are larger trucks on the road than pickups. So good luck making all your drivers.obey, the rules of the road, instead of blaming it on truck ownership. And in the meantime, please staying safe.

Happy manning to you too! lol

How long will the batteries last and what will be the replacement cost?

    • N C

      November 6, 2022 at 6:49 pm

How long before the traction battery pack pays for itself? Since it eliminates fuelish costs… Is what intelligent people, such as fleet owners are asking…. plus the traction battery pack has a warranty….

BTW, How long does the average engine and transmission last and what is their replacement cost? Since every legitimate study has shown that maintenance costs go down on average with EV ownership.

  25. Kent Purdy

    November 6, 2022 at 5:05 am

The range extender that RAM is rumored to have makes a lot of sense. It allows a much smaller battery to be used while maintaining the same range, vastly reducing the need for mined and processed metal and other battery components. Without a range extender, you’re stuck with a massive battery that you rarely need.

    • N C

      November 6, 2022 at 6:14 pm

I hope a pickup will use CATL’s EVOGO modular battery swapping blocks, that allow the use of a lower capacity battery pack, most of the time, or something similar to it someday….

But IMHO RAM’s range extender will just be about increasing, its range, mostly for towing… not shrinking its, base battery pack capacity, below that of its competitors….I just hope it’ll be an innovative design, such as a free piston engine, which would have far fewer parts, but I doubt it, come to fruition….

But what do I know? Since I never thought GM, would have resurrected It’s mid-gate, which I hoped, GM would offer, when it first announced that they were produced at EV pickup, But I thought a mid-gate, was just wishful thinking, on my part…

BTW I still hope Ford will come out with its patented plug-in range extender option someday…..

    • Kent Purdy

      November 6, 2022 at 6:23 pm

@N C “its range, mostly for towing..” time will tell if their generator is specific to extending range only, or will assist in powering the vehicle.

    • N C

      November 6, 2022 at 8:07 pm

@Kent Purdy . the only original point of deviation, was that I doubt that they will offer a very low capacity battery pack…. But who knows???

fwiw “assisting in “powering” the vehicle” would make it a parallel PHEV…. Which is not what Stanantis is talking about… So that would be a big surprise…

Hopefully we will find out the specs in January….

    • Kent Purdy

      November 6, 2022 at 9:37 pm

@N C What capacity is low? 50 kWh?

    • N C

      November 6, 2022 at 9:53 pm

@Kent Purdy Baseline is what the competition is doing…. So 50kWh would be lower…. It would also cause peripheral issues, such as limiting regen braking capacity….

      But we will see,….

    • Kent Purdy

      November 7, 2022 at 6:09 am

@N C “let’s see if RAM can energize the BEV. ” was that really a “know for sure” claim? Really?

    • N C

      November 7, 2022 at 1:18 pm

@Kent Purdy Mark Twain. quote. you think is about RAM? Really?

    • Kent Purdy

      November 7, 2022 at 2:22 pm

@N C ” you think is about RAM? ” you never stated what is a full sized battery. You never stated what’s too small, especially since other EVs are offered in different sizes. What’s your beef? Is your beef my deep skepticism that RAM will offer a truck with a battery that is equal Ford’s/GM’s largest size and still offer a range extender? If so, weight management and especially price tag says that isn’t going to happen. You can take that to the bank. It’ quite possible that Stellantis will pull a BMW and offer a ranger extender with its smaller battery options, but not for its largest battery model. And yes, that is really true.

    • N C

      November 7, 2022 at 4:14 pm

@Kent Purdy Actually much of what we said has been like-minded…..You’re the only one that thinks about this, as somebody having a “beef”….

and there is no magical battery capacity figure….. I was just pointing out the trade-offs, between the different options and variables….

Also the CEO of Stellantis, doubts about BEVs, makes your viewpoint, about what will happen, a definite possibility…..which would be fine with me….

people should never fully agree on anything…. if they do, It is a sign, that they are in a cult….

fwiw I hoped one at least one the BEV pickups would offer a midgate….. But I was deeply skeptical that any of them would….So when GM came out with one that did…. I was happy to know my skepticism was unwarranted and for that skepticism to be proven wrong……

      ego is counterproductive….

    • Kent Purdy

      November 7, 2022 at 8:11 pm

@N C no doubt, ego is indeed counterproductive.

ive yet to see an 8ft bed version, what gives?

    • N C

      November 6, 2022 at 8:35 pm

It would be far too costly for GM to offer it, based on demand…..

You have a better chance with Ford offering it in the near future, since it still uses a ladder frame…

    • Zombl337

      November 6, 2022 at 8:45 pm

As somewhat a car fan I like both. In my opinion I’m digging the Chevrolet EV truck design. But at the same time the GMC EV has multiple batteries can do the crab walk and has a big tablet inside it. So yeah… I’m honestly leaning towards the GMC more just because of the multiple batteries crab walk parking and big tablet. I just wish the GMC EV added twitch discord and Instagram. 🙂

    • N C

      November 6, 2022 at 8:27 pm

GMC EV offer multiple battery pack options…. but so will Chevrolet….

and even crab walking, only seems like a software update away for Chevrolet??? since it also includes rear steering…. Which includes the hardware needed for it….

Plus Ford and GM are transitioning over to an Android based OS…. so twitch, discord and Instagram, are likely on the horizon too…

    • mark smithro

I understand it is a niche application, but, NO ONE is talking about launching watercraft from a tow hitch in water. Will that affect the battery platform and the connections when the rear of a vehicle is submerged in water.
