I know that I’m guilty of tapping but that’s my ADHD kicking in. In high school there was a girl that sat behind me who would always call me out and lash out on me for tapping my pencil and such and I would apologize and explain that I have ADHD but she didn’t understand.

I turned around on so many occasions expecting someone trying to pickpocket me but it turned out to be some random businessman talking on the phone and not paying attention to the traffic or something like that, it was ridiculous but I guess it’s just a cultural thing that NYers do.

He never explains why we shake hands. He only says it’s not to show we aren’t carrying a weapon. What makes him an expert and what does his being an FBI Agent have to do with anything? There is no mention of the FBI in the video. There are bogus people on the internet claiming to be body language experts. They offer up their interpretation of people who are sitting and talking. The “experts” claim that peoples sitting a certain way proves they are telling lies and are evil. Coincidently their interpritations always coincide with their political preferences- the person they like is always telling the truth while the person they dislike is always lying. Such “experts” are offered as proof by looney conspiracy theory promoters. It would be interesting to see how these “experts” would interpret people’s body language if the people they were watching had their identity hidden so the “experts” didn’t know what their subjects’ politics were.

I hate, and I mean this with all due harshness, a weak handshake. I take it as a sign of disrespect. If you shake my hand, and extend what I could only assume is a hand shaped dead fish, you and I will never get along and I will always see you as someone who will never view me as an equal. You either think I am some delicate little bird or you are giving me a subtle clue into just how sexist you are.

    • C H

      July 13, 2021 at 1:07 am

If you’re forcing me to touch your hand as some sort of greeting, I’ll give it all the respect I give a cat bringing me a dead mouse will get… get that thing out of here, swatting it away with a newspaper so I don’t have to touch it. (or something to that effect.) Has nothing to do with how I view you as a person… I just DESPISE handshakes. You’re view seems like a silly thing to attribute to people based on a handshake alone, with no other contributory evidence, such as things they’re saying or actual actions taken with a motivation behind them.

  116. Kyle Garrett

I was taught as a kid how to shake hands by a man who would crush my hand every time we shook. I think he was training me to get firm with my handshake as to avoid feeling pain.

The more muscle you out into it the less painful it was. Kind of a douchey way to handle it, but my handshake is very firm to this day.

I’m kinda skeptical about the handshake thing because if it was just because we are primates then it would be universal throughout every culture, but it isn’t. Especially in Asian cultures shaking hands isn’t really a thing, or at least it wasn’t without some kind of western influence.

This was great. It made me feel better about how I will often be triggered or find people who are very animated to be untrustworthy and distracting. If someone is speaking and moving their eyebrows, head, hands or shoulders any particular way other than basically still, I tend to have a negative reaction to it. Just hearing them speak and hearing the words makes me listen and the rest is distracting.

Really man spreading is because there parents disnt talk with them… no I’m sorry but women can put there legs together. Men have a sensitive organ between there legs. Yes some over do it but to say we shouldnt have a thigh gap to create enough space to sit comfortable is completely ignorant. This is probably someone who was a woman and now says there a man.

I disagree with your attitude that you feel and believe your thoughts are 100%
    accurate🤔😐.
Just like anyone (psychiatrist, psycologist, etc.) who works in any and all
    fields of study.
What you have stated can ONLY BE USED AS GUIDELINES
    RATHER THAN ABSOLUTES!

We are are human. We are four dimensionsal.
    Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual.
ALL FOUR MAKE US WHO WE ARE.
You are only speaking about one or two dimensions.
You have made too many assumptions.
No human, not even you, have equal levels within our “selves””dimensions” .
It is the combination of every life experience that makes us:
do what we do, say what we say, think what we think, feel what we feel.
You are not taking into your assumptions all the :
Physical health, Emotional health, Mental health, Spiritual health,
    and any combination(s) therein.
Even within each human life, our way of thinking can change at any time,
    due to a new experience.
Please do not project your’s, or anyone elses life, as equal to mine.
I will do the same for you.

To think or believe YOU have all knowledge and experience is
    arrogant and vulgar.

I have a strong handshake. Partly because I don’t want to give a weak one, partly because I have a natural strong grip. What I’m wondering is how do I match someone’s handshake? As woman, I get the feeling that most men will assume my grip to be tender and that’s just a recipe for disaster as we try to adjust our hand grip to each other’s. Given, you only have 1.5 seconds to figure it out.

I always make eye contact and I try not to have a malevolent countenance. If I’m talking to children or a child I usually smile but if I am trying to get them to understand that they are doing something that they shouldn’t I keep a calm face with the sentiment that I care about them. If I am talking to people at the grocery store I try to make a joke because nobody wants to go shopping. It’s very stressful. Now that covid19 is around I don’t touch people but I am usually eager to touch a person if at all, on the outer arm near the should. But this is usually to comfort or console or to say you’re doing a good job. But since covid19 I have not been touching people.

I actually kinda like handshakes. If you’re meeting someone new and you touch hands in that polite way dictated by etiquette (depending on cultural differences), I see it as a sort of icebreaker, a way to literally get a feel for that person. It can be more awkward for me to just stand there and wave after being introduced or something instead of just shaking hands.

On the other hand, I’ve never been comfortable with cheek kisses as some cultures do. Too close for me. I’m really glad this video mentioned cultural differences because oftentimes I’ll see people talking down to Americans for being “uptight” for not kissing cheeks when in reality, a whole bunch of cultures don’t do it. If you can be understanding of other cultures’ greetings (ie. bowing, which obviously doesn’t even require touching at all), then why not handshakes?

In the 20’ties I worked in Singapore, and next to my hotel there was a shopping mall, and after job I went in there one day to buy a coke, just opposite of where I was walking there was this beautiful young girl and as a man I was looking at her while I was walking, when I reached her she approached me and started walking next to me and I was puzzled, it turned out that young girl was a prostitute and she considered me looking at her as an agreement of “purchase” and when she realised I was not prepared to “buy” we ended up in an argument, I was actually arguing with a prostitute in a shopping mall, extremely embarrassing, later I asked around and the “veterans” told me a 3 seconds glare was considered as a contract, I do not know if that is true, and I had no idea that “school girl” was “working” but was MUCH more careful afterwards

I spread my legs while sitting cause my balls get hot and stick to my leg if I don’t and I’m not fan of that. Clearly, Mr fbi guy can’t relate because of his lack of balls. Which is also pretty evident based on his resentment towards anything else considered “masculine” like a strong handshake or direct eye contact.

Handshakes are masonic stratification symbols of hierarchy, stop doing it. Far too intimate & dishonourable to both parties. Just nod in acknowledgment to one another. Stop acting like peasants you are much more than that. Don’t listen to authority types like this. They are just repeater stations to keep the sheep enclosed. You are LIONS NOT SHEEP. Quite often, when we are overstimulated, we pace, rock, flick fingers etc. it’s called stimming, and is not meant to offend or annoy anyone. It’s just how our brain works to help us refocus on the task at hand, or the overstimulated emotion we’re feeling at that moment.

Seats on public transportation were designed at a time when a tall man was 5’7″.

Go sit on a chair made for a child (toddler) and see where your legs go.

If you look close at the pictures of men “manspreading” they are usually men over six foot tall!
Anyone who takes public transportation will also notice that it’s mostly women who use bags and other items, sit in the isle seats etc and take up more space deliberately.

Handshakes in professional settings are also complicated by gender. I’m a woman in a professional workplace, and I am very likely to reach out for a handshake upon introduction, as I think is typical for most male-presenting professionals. Some associates (male and female) just respond naturally, and we do the normal pressure, quick grasp, two or three, done. I like shaking hands, it feels like the original ice-breaker.
But I’d also say about half of the men look at my outstretched hand in confusion. And I’ve also noticed that some female professionals just don’t do it at all, even while all the men around them are instinctively shaking hands as a greeting. I think this is still settling down in terms of gender norms in the business place.

*This is anecdotal and trivial as real life is full of unpredictable variables.
So your observations may be common in a specific contexts, places, cultures, individuals, time etc…BUT there’s no hard scientific “proof” that agrees with your hypothesis or if its even something that can be measured.. its ingenuine to present it as implicit facts imo. It’d be great if you mentioned your sources.
I admit that I may be wrong and if I am in fact misunderstanding you, then my apologies.*

I have very very severe Tourettes and have well over 80 different vocal and motor tics… I would prove very paradoxical and challenging for any kind of body language reading 🙄

Nobody can possibly read me with any accuracy due to the obvious mix messages of my constant tics…✍️ Funny 🙄

I made this comment before the section on “Verbal Tics”

Combined with my facial tics… I have throat clearing tics, humming, echoalia, facial grimacing, excessive eye blinking… And about another 60 tics that directly qualify as the very things showcased in this video as being off putting at the very least…

Try to observe if such habits are overtly frequently happening 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m possibly a little odd with space. If it’s close family or friends, space doesn’t really exist. Bumps out real quick to three feet with friends and family I’m not quite as close to, as well as casual acquaintances. You know, people I know, but I’m not so close too. Then for total strangers my default seems to be four feet, minimum.
