    Mixed bag on this one.
Being “for profit” is much worse than it sounds, because not only do they chase profits, but it tends to mean they “dumb everything down” for the masses, so you get a neutered product barely achieving any of its potential (same thing happened to internet, search engines etc).
There’s also the issue of why and how and who gets to decide what’s “ethical” and why they presume that matters more than freedom of information. Biology students could not ask gpt questions about reproductive systems without it canceling their questions and telling them agenda like bs instead of just answering their question.

On that last part, thats hardly a new issue by any measure

In middle school we had to learn about breast cancer as part of 7th grade health class, and we cudnt look it up on the computers bcuz the websense filterin software used by the school blocked searches for breast. Similarly we also cudnt look up chicken breast recipes.

Our whole class ended up havin to do all our research usin the three books the library had, bcuz someone decided that information about chicken breasts and breast cancer shudnt be allowed

And also in that health class, i was denied learnin about my body and bodies like mine bcuz of an agenda of intersex erasure. Our health books only showed models of XX females and XY males, leavin me to conclude i was just an XY male who simply was worse at bein such in every way… I felt like a failed model of an XY person, bcuz i did not know i was a correct model of an XXY person; bcuz of an agenda that sought to hide the existence of intersex ppl, both from ourselves and from others

In the past it was once normal for health classes to involve a step where they did a karyotypin test to help illustrate to students what their sexual chromosomes are… But bcuz of their desire to hide intersex existence, they stopped that practice after a couple of incidents of kids findin out they were intersex thru the test results

An agenda of intersex erasure meant i grew up feelin like a flawed male; all bcuz its easier for society to imagine only two boxes, to the pt they even teach that we have but two boxes sexually… Despite all the evidence contrary to such; bcuz its easier for society to pretend intersex ppl dont exist, nad thus further marginalise us

I’m begging humanity to actually dedicate its time towards something truly worthwhile like preserving nature or eliminating hunger. “Lets invent an AI that will do what humans already do, just worse! Then let’s make it open source so any corporation can co-opt and use it for whatever means they wish!” You can’t tell me you saw any benefit to society from this work. You can’t tell me you didn’t see the same patterns happening that always happen. “This was supposed to be protected from corporatism and profit” except you did nothing to prevent that……… What was even the POINT?

It’s about rich people’s private jets not helping society.

Yeah, I don’t like how “for profit” is sat across from “do good.” This is a big false equivalency and sucker a$$ virtue signal.

Is Chat GPT a bad thing? Because I use it all the time and it’s been really helpful. Is it going to wisk me away to Outer space or steal my children or take my retirement or get me arrested by the FBI for something I didn’t do? I’m kidding. I know very little about A1 except for its potential to be extremely helpful ( medicine, the environment, basic science) and its potential to be racist, sexist, dangerous in politics, governments etc if we don’t get controls on it. So but really, should we not be using Chap GPT at this stage?

The government should take more control. Some private non profit organization will never be taken seriously by anyone let alone big companies.

why arent you putting the full video up?

But ChatGPT was originally a research demo. It’s probably too small to notify the Board when it launched. The underlying model, GPT 3.0 was released 18 months ago by the time ChatGPT randomly blow up. It’s only in retrospect this would look bad.

    • @yuhaoc

      June 2, 2024 at 4:22 am

When I say “launch” it’s an exaggeration, ChatGPT just went live on their developer site one day following a tweet. I don’t think anyone expected it became popular. So I think it’s reasonable to say the board was given notification because nobody thought this was important

    • @yuhaoc

      June 2, 2024 at 4:27 am

Tech demo like this are so common in the industry, in any given day there are hundreds if not thousands of them launched. I seriously doubt most executives would even care even if they are notified. I respect Helen, but she’s expertise is in safety. And she on the board whose job is not to oversee daily operations. I think it’s entirely normal she and other board members are not notified about a research demo on developer site was launched.
