Former Air Force Fighter Pilot Breaks Down 12 Fighter Pilot Scenes From Film & TV | WIRED

Former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot Christine “Grinder” Mau examines some flying and dogfighting scenes from popular movies and television shows, and determines how accurate they really are. Could Iron Man actually outclass an F-22? As seen in ‘Dunkirk,’ what kind of a challenge does glare actually pose? Does ‘The Incredibles’ get pilot language right?…

British pilots had terrible sunglasses in the beginning of ww2 – my father said, that the americans supplied them all with ray ban sunglasses (332 squadron RAF) – and that really made a significant differens – they did not have helmets with a shields in those days. !!!

Loved this video! Grinder is accurate that most dogfight movies show planes too close…but in a Top Gun behind the scenes they talk about how two jets flying at normal ranges doesn’t look good on film since they are spread too far apart.

Pilots didn’t have visors/sunglasses in the Ww2, get real women, I would like to see you up against the German airforce In Ww2 I’m pretty sure you would not last 1 mission, in that time you flew by the seat of your pants in a very basic plane not some modern computer controlled metal bucket. Don’t compare flying in a battle of today compare with flying in those days.

“Coffin Corner” refers to the convergence of low speed stall and high speed Mach buffet at high altitude, resulting in very little room for error. It’s the reason most airplanes are required to be on autopilot above a certain altitude. I’m sure she knows this; I don’t know why she didn’t reference it.

“Grinder” Great breakdown o these movies, you killed me w/ “I think I was in 4th grade…”
I was an 3rd yr AFROTC in college when TopGun came out…. I agree, being an Eagle Driver was some of best times of my life…

RTB killed me because I probably would have lost my wings because I might/would have shot that MIG after shooting down my element, or clean shot before reaching Seoul. Command in that movie was nonsensical..

As a former Ego Driver, you don’t shoot down my wingman and LIVE!!!

There was at least one business jet fitted with afterburners, the Dassault Falcon 20 and Dassault built a number of business jets with full fighter radar and equipment fit (including hard points) as military trainers. The Iraqi airforce used one to stage a strike on a US warship.

The question is… for someone who is clearly well versed and experienced fighter pilot, if Hollywood was at least 80-90% accurate in their movie portrayals. How interesting would these films be to watch, and I wonder how many who saw Top Gun or Iron Eagle in the mid 80s were disappointed that one cannot evade an ‘unfriendly’ with an aileron roll!

Even though the HUD in Top Gun is highly inaccurate in a Tomcat, I have to give it props because it is also the movie that got me into fighters. Movies will always be entertaining, but inaccurate to add to the excitement. Hopefully Maverick will be more accurate to the Super Hornet. Excellent analysis ma’am ! I am going to go play DCS, and pretend I am a fighter pilot now lol. BTW, DCS World is releasing a F-15E module…..eventually.

Great review “Grinder”! The only thing that was a bit off base was the WWII pilots with their masks off. Being the son of a WWII US Aviation Vet, it was most common for them to fly without them on, since they communicated with mostly throat mics, officially known a laryngophones. When they got to altitude, they would put their masks on, or when they came close to their known reach of enemy fighters. Otherwise, I loved the vid!

    No TDLN will be disclosed:

My squad had our butts pulled out of a jam by a female A10 driver and wing out of Bagram one afternoon. The driver was as cool as a cucumber while she made her runs and went into the fight without hesitation. They also stuck around to make sure that we were clear and underway before they RTB. Were it not for her, and her wing’s actions that day we most likely would not have made it out in one piece. Massive props.

World war 2 pilot microphone was on there throat not in the oxygen mask

  192. antartis73

    September 6, 2020 at 1:51 pm

Just a few comments; Not all ww2 pilot masks have the microphone incorporated in them, case in point world war 2 USAAF T-20 and T-30, the German ones, RAF mk.II and Soviet La-3 and La-5 throat microphones. So one can safely assume that the pilots in the Red Tails are using the USAAF type. Probably the least noticeable one of many mistakes in that film. Also most fighter pilots didn’t wear their oxygen mask supply below 10,000ft because there was no need as oxygen is sufficient. The Red Tails Pilots are strafing up a train very close to ground level. Also in Top Gun they had real navy fighter pilot consultants, I’m sure the lingo was checked with them? ‘Lock up’ on infrared missile shots sounds about right no? Finally on the ‘pull up blow up’ comment; In propeller fighters such as the P-51 many pilots would use the climbing advantage against 109s in a zoom climb to force the German pilots to stall out and get right behind their tail. like Clarence ‘Bud’ Anderson.I don’t know how good a fighter pilot you are and I do agree with most of the other comments but you do come across as an expert fighter pilot on all eras which I’m sorry to say you can’t be.

Spitfires, especially the early ones were very inefficient at higher altitudes and was easily out manoeuvred by the BF109.

Thank you for this video!! I think the technology shown in movies is better these days than in years gone by, but it’s still fantastic to get authoritative opinions about how close to real the movie-makers have got it. I guess its not easy to have script-writers and designers get together with pilots to iron out these sorts of inaccuracies, but it certainly makes a difference to me. And I assume lots of others too. i smirked a few times at how polite you were at some of the clips, saying “…not realistic.” when someone else, who is not as polite as you would say “That’s total BS!” Thank you again – highly entertaining video, and educational as well.

Its one of Helen’s oldest friends ( picture of him in the scene by a jet when she’s on the phone) there was a longer scene with him “handing over the keys” but was ended on the edit room floor. 4:02 Correction: in WWII, they used a throat mic, not a modern day mic in the mask.

Further, at low altitude, as depicted, they might well have the mask off because they don’t need the oxygen and it’s already hot and stuffy enough in a cockpit with no air conditioning that mask off could be cooler and allow easier breathing.

9:21 Correction: The correct correction is that Maverick is not going for a radar lock, but that he is going for an IR lock, as the close range infra red missile requires its own lock, regardless of what the radar may or may not be locked onto.

11:09 Very unlikely, but not totally unrealistic:

F-5E!!!! THAT WAS NO F-5E they rolled inverted over! Even ignoring the obvious “Duh, that’s a MiG-28!!!!!” (which is… uhh… well… an F-5E or T-38 painted in a fictional nation’s livery… also, MiG uses odd numbers for their aircraft, not even numbers), you’d think she’d know an F-5E is a single seat aircraft. That was most definitely one of the T-38’s painted up as a filming aircraft. While the T-38 uses a lot of the overall shape of an F-5E, they are very different aircraft. An F-5E would run circles around a T-38. The T-38 is intended for training and familiarization flights. It’s also an act of treason to question the glory of Top Gun… just sayin!

Anotehr thing about the SAMs was that they were slow. Modern AAs and SAMs start at Mach 3 where as the jet in the first scene was probably not even going Mach 1. There is a YouTube video of a SAM missing a Saudi Apache helicopter to show you how visually fast those things go.

The canopy on canopy scene in Top Gun can’t be done because the vertical stabilizers of the F-14 would hit the other aircraft.

10:30. Low levels, time to die. Very good points. I witnessed an F-16 crash that illustrated that; 9 AM, October 15, 1989. It was going fast enough and low enough that the pilot could do little more than try to minimize damage and casualties on the ground. We can’t prove this was his actual intent, since it would have been impossible for anything to have survived that impact.

There’s the “Dassault Falcon 20”, which is a rare exception for that rule. The Falcon 20 was flown with the Garrett TFE1042 engine with afterburners. But otherwise, she is right, it’s totally uncommon.

Coffin Corner, also known as Q Corner, is a term for the peak at the top of the flight envelope where the critical Mach number and stall speed are within a few knots.
Simplified explanation though as there are multiple factors involved in where this peak or “corner” approach each other/intersect including G-force loading, gross loaded weight etc.

Movies and shows always want to show the actors’ faces, so it’s almost inevitable that they will have any sort of masks off where possible. Space movies also do something similar, where spacesuit helmets always seem to have lights inside that light up the actors’ faces but would probably be a terrible nuisance in real life. It’s inaccurate, but it’s probably always going to happen as long as movies and shows are made.

In a simulation I’ve done Mach 1.5 50ft off the ground and I used a thrust master. Russians also train to fly almost Mach 1 close to the ground with a micro TTD. I’m pretty sure pilots during red flag have also done the same. I wish they reviewed one of the most famous scenes where maverick buzzes the tower in a flyby. Definitely can see a lot of big wigs going crazy if that was done for real I’d imagine you’d do jail time for a stunt like that on a busy military base or carrier.

Technically it isn’t impossible to design a fighter that could make those turns, we just await the human body (or drone) that can handle the g forces and the design that could enable additional thrusters to make such a turn

WADR Ma’am, in WWII pilota used throat mikes…the mike was not in the mask. Also, during the War, pilots could select “demand” or “full” on their O2 supply, and rarely used O2 below 8k in order to preserve their very limited supply of O2.

My Grandfather was a pilot in the South Pacific throughout the war, and still had one of his masks.

2:10 ya, you want to dive, HARD….. the missile is trying to lead you… but it doesnt know where the ground is
so by diving…. you can get it to track into the dirt, miles before it is close to you (yet, you still have enough room to pull up)
    .
and ya…. that blue sky….AKA space…. is very cold, and you are the hottest thing in the sky
get low…. the ground thats been in the sun for 7 hours is quite hot

    • kain hall

      September 22, 2020 at 6:38 am

4:21 these WW2 mics are NO WHERE NEAR as sensitive as modern day mics.
simply bringing it a bit closer isnt going to do crap
      .
even modern mics….despite being way more sensitive…. because of the AGGRESSIVE noise gating…..
its just going to think of your voice as the jet / prop making a bit of noise, and completely ignore it

    • kain hall

      September 22, 2020 at 6:45 am

8:04 “ill try barrel rolling, thats a good trick”
      .
yet to the missile, that only cares about heat…. (or radar reflection)
your not changing position….. to the missile, you are flying straight and level
      .
      AKA…. a perfect target.
      .
even a simple “roll left, and pull back on the stick and turn very hard”
is better than just spinning around in the same geometric “plain”
      .
in real life….. the missiles would not of been confused by that
and simply planted themselves right up her exhaust

    • kain hall

      September 22, 2020 at 6:50 am

10:11 we do that in DCS flight sim (a sim originally developed for the military…. were EVERY button is clickable, and does EXACTLY what it does in real life)
      .
however…. it takes a LOT of skill to….
      first…. match speeds
second… roll inverted and not go up or down
third…. to hold this position long enough to take a picture and flip them off
      .
in DCS…. we do it as more as a meme
rather than anything tactical or strategic

coffin corner is when your altitude is very high….. and in that thin air, you must go fast to get lift in said thin air
but, the speed of sound is lower in thinner air
      .
so you can very quickly end up over speeding (snapping a wing off)
or flying too slow (high ground speed, but low air speed over the wings…. again, due to thin air)….. which makes you stall
      .
you might have a 10 mph (knot) range between stall (aka, too slow) and over-speed

you have this VERY small “corner” in your data to fly in
    .
    again….
    too slow…. and you stall
10 knots (mph) faster….. and you over-speed and rip a wing off
    .

Coffin corner is the region of flight where a fast but subsonic fixed-wing aircraft’s stall speed is near the critical Mach number, at a given gross weight and G-force loading. In this region of flight, it is very difficult to keep an airplane in stable flight.

15:45 I’ve heard U-2 pilots use the term coffin corner and what they are talking about is when they are up so high close to the maximum ceiling, the air is too thin that you need to fly faster to maintain lift but are almost flying the fastest allowed before overspeeding the plane. They fly near the “coffin corner” at usually a few knots between stalling the plane and over speeding the plane. If you look at the diagrams/spaghetti charts in the Tech Order for the plane, where these 2 airspeed lines intersect is known as the coffin corner. “Coffin” because you’ll die if you push the envelope any farther and “corner” because when 2 lines intersect they make a corner. There, taught the F-35 lady something she never had to deal with or learn in her fighter days.

  341. Jeremy Miller

    October 11, 2020 at 3:42 am

It hard to tell in the clip because his jacket is zipped up but many of the old fighter planes like the p40 in Redtails used throat mics. The microphone is strapped around your throat so you don’t need a mask. If the plane is under 10,000ft you don’t need oxygen. Not for sure they show it in the movie but in real events under 10,000 there is no need and those old birds had the oxygen stored in tanks so when they didn’t need it they would not use it. So for her to say the mic is in the mask and they have to have it is totally false. She is part wrong just because he is under 10,000 and would not need oxygen and then he could of had a throat mic on. But either way he was almost on the ground.

Umm, in case you did not notice Miss Super Fighter Jock, the pilots in Dunkirk were wearing LEATHER helmets made in that period of time, NOT a modern flight helmet! At best some of the WWII fighter planes had smoked canopies but not all of them did.

okay, problem with the top gun review, the part just before Maverick and Goose go into the flat spin. if i understand the Top Gun academy correctly, its a constant competition to get on top, but what Ice-Man did during that one scene where he banks up instead of to the right wouldve gotten him expelled or at least reprimanded, and the fact that he intentionally cuts off maverick to get the shot first when there were two other bogeys that he could’ve gone after, Viper and Jester would’ve been all over him at that point.

Great comments, so many of the audiences will not pick up on the inaccuracies of a movie.
