I think it’s important point to make that although almond milk isn’t the best plant based milk for the environment. It is still better than dairy milk due to the land and water the cattle require.

Another plant ‘milk’ is horchata (Spanish), orxata (Catalan) or orzata (Italian) which means ‘of barley’, but nowadays is made with almond (Italy), chufa (Spain) or rice (Mexico)

It is weird to mention the water requirements for almond milk and talking about the environmental impact without adding that it’s still lower than cow’s milk. The statement as worded on its own can be misleading and make people think it’s worse than cow’s milk.

I suspect soy milk made it into the food guide under dairy because the soy industry lobbied for it to be, not because of any nutritional value.

    • Steph M

      April 28, 2022 at 7:00 pm

soy milk has protein, amino acids, and enriched with vitamin d and calcium, while being low I sugar and fat. I consider that nutritional value.

Pacific Foods brand Hemp milk is #1 for basically everything. Chobani Oat is #2. We’re not baby cows, so for anyone out there who thinks they are a baby cow, pay attention! Also cow milk is not good for you, just look up the nutrition info of human and cow milk and compare them… don’t let a for profit industry fool you, they really don’t care about your health!

I think it’s important to mention that phytoestrogens, and the foods that contain it, aren’t recommended for everybody. They are classified as hormone disrupters.

    • Pareisu

      April 30, 2022 at 1:10 am

This is largely debunked by meta-analyses. They’re actually known to reduce prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women. The only clinically significant outcomes that have occurred regarding them has been with case studies of extreme overconsumption.

Did she just say phytoestrogens are associated with good health? That’s the first time I’ve hear that claim.

    • Pareisu

      April 30, 2022 at 1:07 am

Worth doing some research. People tend to read “estrogen” and become afraid of some hormonal implication that largely doesn’t exist. Isoflavones have been known to reduce the risk of things like prostate cancer and have other beneficial health effects without any concerns when used moderately.

This video is total misinformation and more plant based anti-human nonsense. Give these pesticide laden liquids to your kids if you hate them. Give them bacon, eggs, and real milk(all organic and pasture raised) if you love them. Simple.

I feel like they could have curated this tour of plant milks a bit better. Most of these were just glossed over with no real comparison to cow’s milk or each other. The info was REALLY uneven. Some notes about environment here, some notes about how processed it is there, here are some nutrient facts sprinkled about…. no standard comparison to understand how they actually differ. Not the best video.

Phytoestrogens destroy your horomone balance, they reduce your essential testosterone which is detrimental to both sexes and causes weight gain. Oatmilk is great if you want diabetes. I wish she would be honest in her assessments but this is all misinformation in favor of food sales. Mega FAIL

i am allergic to casein (present in all dairy products), hemp, and legumes (like peas, soy, beans, tamarind, peanuts, and so many more). I make homemade sunflower seed milk with a machine that makes plant based milks (in Asia a lot of people have them to make homemade soy milk). It’s super creamy and super cheap to make, same way as you would make soy milk.

Almost all plant based milks have either soy or peas as added ingredients so I resorted to making my own. I loved the taste of store bought flaxseed milk but it has that problem. Coconut milk is easier to buy without added stuff.

I had never heard of potato milk, but I would love to try it! Potatoes are super easy to digest for most people with digestive issues, I hope I can get my hands on a homemade recipe to try 😋

Also, I have yet to find a video on the environmental implications of pea milk.

    Soy:

“To say that soy doesn’t contain estrogen is technically accurate, but it’s an incomplete and loaded assessment. Some plants do contain compounds that are similar to estrogen, called phytoestrogens. Soy contains relatively a lot of them. Phytoestrogens can mimic the effects of estrogen in human cells, but the significance of that effect on the whole human body is unclear. Some lab tests make the phytoestrogen effect sound powerful. For example, in November, a study in the Journal of Food Science compared assays on milk, rice, burgers, and tofu. Researchers reported that a tofu burger had 750 times more “estrogenic activity” than the other foods, and three times more than a dose of Premarin estrogen-replacement therapy. Though what, if anything, such “estrogenic activity” would mean in human bodies is unclear.”

Until science is 99.99% clear on the effects of soy on men, men should steer clear.

You can tell so many of these were cut short halfway through her sentences. Why? You barely explained half of these. Glossed over the environmental impacts of most and just cut out so much information.

Also if you’re talking about the environmental impacts of alternative milk you should probably compare it to dairy milk, since that’s what they are alternative to.

i stopped drinking almond milk bc i learened about the environmental impact of it. Then i started trying oat milk since at the time it was the most environmentally friendly one. it it doesnt have as many nutrients as other milks so i try to only drink Oatly’s oat milk since it actually has a lot of nutrients packed in it! I tried walnut milk and it was REALLY good. delicious. love banana milk. some bananamilks do still have a banana taste. i dont like those tho i like the one shes showing off here.

i wish she would have been able to get into the environmental impact of the other milks 🙁 thats a major part in which milk to buy for me bc theres no need for a dairy alternative if it isnt glutenfree/lactosefree and environmentally friendly. we dont need to be making so much of those kinds of milks if its just driving us further into a hole.

One thing that absolutely needs to be said about making your own plant based milks is that homemade plant milks are not supplemented with B12, which can be a major problem if you are eating a plant based diet, as B12 only naturally occurs in animal products, so most people who follow a plant based diet will end up with a B12 deficiency if they rely on homemade as opposed to supplemented store bought plant based milk.

That said, it’s possible that she mentioned this and that it was cut.

    Differences: Milk to Soy Milk

    Calcium: 27% to 6%
    Sodium 4% to 5%
Potassium: 322 mg to 287 [there’s no RDA for it because we use more than we can physically intake, and it wastes faster than we can use it.]

Everything else between them in superfluous, and pointless to list. All-in-all, Cows milk is better for you, and better for the environment.

      May 21, 2022 at 8:18 pm

That’s assuming that the average person needs more calcium, less sodiuM and more potassium

    • Icarus

      May 21, 2022 at 8:50 pm

@36shadowboy RDA are based on the average person who ingests a 2000 calorie diet.

Of course, not an assumption. A fact.

If you ingest 1000 calories, Halve RDA percents, and if you ingest 4000 calories double. Do this with supplements as well.

The average person eats a 2k calorie diet, that’s why it was used originally in food labels.

Right off the bat there is misinformation. Yes almonds use a lot of water (though still less than meat and dairy) but almond milk is only 2% almonds. It actually takes almost twice as much water to make dairy milk than almond milk

  472. Michael DK

    May 28, 2022 at 1:36 pm

For being a food scientist she makes a few surprising errors and omissions where she is echoing common views on food, rather than the actual research.

Firstly : Not a word on anti-nutrients in (unfermented) soymilk. Most notably phytates, but there are others. Also saying that phyto-estrogens are “healthy” depends a lot on the gender, age, and hormonal balances of the people consuming it. It can cause issues long-term. She als does not mention most of the soy in the USA is GMO, and is sprayed with huge amounts of pesticides. It’s very environmentally unfriendly, but not for the usual reasons (carbon footprint, water consumption)

Secondly: No, spelt does not contain far less gluten (or gliadin – gliadin itself is a component protein of gluten, so that’s already odd for her to say). Spelt contains about the same amount of gluten as wheat does, except it’s generally in somewhat of a different form of gluten.

I’ve caught a few more inconsistencies which makes me a bit disappointed – if she really is a food scientist, sticking to science is what she should do. Not propagate common belief.

  473. Sheelie Kittie

    May 28, 2022 at 4:34 pm

I will like to be vegan and transition to almond or cashew, even pistachio milk. But I worry about the environmental impact. Is it still ultimately more eco-friendly compared to dairy milk? I’m allergic to soy milk and oat or seed milk so those are out. Thank you so much 💗
