Psychedelics are only helpful in treating addiction if the user wants to quit. If the user doesn’t want to quit then they can actively ignore the psychological help that psychedelics grant.

Dmt is very ‘electric’ to me with a low dose but at a high dose it’s completely surreal. I get heavy geometric patterns on lsd though. Mushrooms can be all over the place, maybe because of the type.
This is the beauty of psychedelic meds, people. I think he was pretty on point when he said personal bias might have a larger impact than people think while in the experience.

This was such an interesting video. I think it’s worth mentioning that ketamine (which has been used as an anesthetic for decades and is legal) has psychedelic properties and is being used off-label to treat depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses. It is administered in much lower doses because the goal isn’t to be knocked out. I recently tried it and did 6 sessions (in a medical setting) and while it didn’t really help with my depression per say, it is such an amazing and unique experience to have. Although it didn’t help me the way that I wanted it to, it was still such a positive and worthwhile experience that I think many people should try. So I’m just putting this out there for people that want to try psychedelics, but are afraid to, ketamine is a great option although it is quite pricey.

  62. Blake

    September 16, 2021 at 9:21 pm

“someone I know” did DMT several times years and years ago and had never heard the machine elves thing. They never saw them once. Also before using it, it was described as something that the brain creates while we dream. They never saw geometric figures and everything was swirly and ‘drippy.’ So set and setting were definitely in play there

Fun fact, LSD is a hallucinogenic because of the reason it fits so well with serotonin receptors. Mental disorders involving paranoia and hallucinations, like schizophrenia, are caused by an excess of serotonin, as well as potentially other neurotransmitters. Absolutely not saying LSD causes those types of disorders, but it can have a similar effect if taken incorrectly (please correct me if I’m wrong about any of this. I’m a psychology and biology student, but by no means an expert!)

LSD being serotonergic doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with its hallucinogenic properties (interfering/inhibiting compounds in the experiments may act via transportation). There are hallucinogens that are not serotonergic, but instead antiglutamatergic, GABAergic, opioidergic and even cannabinoidergic. Those are just the recognized ways they act and all of these categories include compounds, which are not hallucinogens.

  92. Andrew Combs

    September 18, 2021 at 12:44 am

When he talks at the end about psychedelics disrupting society, one of the ways it was disruptive is that people who use psychedelics tend to question things like war and imperialism, and the Nixon administration wanted to put a stop to the hippy/anti-war movement, so they engineered marketing and legislation to change public opinion and allow them to jail psychedelics users. (Nixon also used the war on drugs to specifically target minorities; do a Google search)

Absolutely brilliant breakdown, though I’d have to disagree when it comes to DMT and the ‘geometric’ hallucinations. I had no idea DMT was synthetic during my first experience and (having done LSD prior) definitely noticed a distinct change in what I was hallucinating. A lot of repeating textures and geometric patterns as opposed to the more contextual organic hallucinations I experienced with acid. Fascinated to see if neuroscience gets to a point where it can explain why that’s the case

I remember very clearly my first ego-death. I had started to believe that I had died, and the people around me were angels speaking to me and telling me of my sins. It was very surreal. I was panicking at first, then I just accepted it and realized there was nothing I could do about it. And I let my soul free itself. And in this act I realized so much about myself and the world and I felt so connected with everything. One thing that gave me a lot of clarity was the fact that subconsciously I thought when I was dying that I was being visited by angels, and judged by God. So it kind of told me that I do believe in a higher power, and maybe even the Christian God. That’s my Ted talk lol

I had never heard or read or known about mechanical elves until I experienced them on Slavia Divinorum (20x). They were not tiny but filled space and were indeed very friendly inviting me to stay with them. Since then I started reading Mackenna and when I read about mechanical elves I was blown away. Not as much as with the elves themselves, but hey!

The part about geometric hallucinations is still confusing to me because he says it’s probably because its man made and we have expectations about how the trip will go so we see more geometric shapes but before I’d ever done DMT I thought it was a natural chemical and i had no expectations i had no idea what would happen and i still saw 8-bit like geometric hallucinations 🤔

I’m confused. Despite all the warnings we get about the negative health effects of all kinds of drugs, how can psychedelics be used to benefit mental health? I mean, this guy even said himself it could be risky to your mental health…and also do we know enough about the long term effects? What if it only helps some mental health patients in the short term? I guess that’s why they’re doing research, but still I’m skeptical. 🤔

Kinda sucks that he didn’t mention that some cancer patients were terminal, but after psilocybin treatments for the anxiety (like he did say), they ended up cured entirely. How much of that is the psilocybin and how much of that is the “placebo effect” is debatable, but people are alive because of it where otherwise they wouldn’t be. Fantastic Fungi, Netflix

I love to listen to you Michael , ive first heard of you on the JRE then bought how to change your mind.
im 24 year old and i live with my father but we are very different …wish my father would be as open minded as you are , i love talking about aliens and space with him but he doesn’t have much to say but i know this stuff interest him too , the thing is he is completly anti-drugs , i tried very gently to talk about psychedelics and explain what they offer as i could but yeah..he his 54 and he will never touch ‘drugs’

i want him so much to experience like a gram of mushrooms on a saturday or sunday afternoon so he could understand what this is about but he has such pre-packaged ideas on this thing without ever have been actually tried it that it makes it impossible to even talk of these thing with him everytime i try to bring it up at the table he instantly goes : oh i don’t wanna hear about drugs , me i keep my mind clear and i don’t need these things .

Peyote grows in Arizona and New Mexico too… it’s not isolated to a small strip of land in Texas… maybe within Texas it’s isolated to that land, but it definitely grows in other areas of the southwest too. I can confirm Arizona and New Mexico firs hand, and I’d bet heavily that it grows in Utah and Nevada, and probably parts of southern California and northern Mexico as well.

For those wondering why psilocybin helped the cancerous people or the depressed ones let me explain to you how psilocybin works. the benefits of micro dosing psilocybin have been studied and are in no shape or form placebo. Psilocybin blocks the default mode network in a brain, and this network controls all the thoughts and emotions related to yourself (every autobiographical thought), so basically your ego and self judgment. So blocking these (often negative) thoughts with psilocybin help a lot of patience with depression. It gives them a chance to live forward without having to spiral down

I really do love this a lot- the video, the topic, etc. (I’m working on getting into clinical psychedelics research) & I really love Michael Pollan. But, of everyone in this field, there are many, many people who have much more expertise on this topic & I’d love to see them promoted on such a widely seen series of videos. Michael is already a very renowned author (which is an understatement in itself), I’d just like to see lesser known experts getting the spotlight they deserve on their research.

Anecdotal, so take this with a grain of salt, but every so often I quit caffeine for two weeks to reset my brain. Normally this is extremely difficult but I’ve found that if I start microdosing the day I quit coffee, it’s incredibly easy and I’m still in a positive mood all day. There is no crankiness which was unexpected.

Considering how many drugs have a paradoxical effect (e.g. amphetamine salts prescribed to a person with ADHD), one wonders if a paradoxical effect might be possible for schizophrenics on LSD.

    • Meowmeow

      September 27, 2021 at 1:23 pm

@apr911 No it’s NOT paradoxical when you have a better understanding of adhd. The one defining feature of ADHD (next to dysregulation of attention, emotion, etc.) is the brain unconsciously marking everything more easily as “not worth pursuing”, and raising dopamine levels lowers this ‘worthiness bar’. The hyper-aspect is a side-effect of being too bored for everything, making someone with ADHD constantly switch between tasks. It’s not the core of the disease.

    • apr911

      September 27, 2021 at 1:33 pm

@Meowmeow paradoxical effect is a medical term to describe “effect of a chemical substance, typically a medical drug, that is opposite to what would usually be expected (based on what effects are seen in a control group of patients without the target illness)”

Thus again, understanding the disease is not required for a drug to have a paradoxical effect…

    • Meowmeow

      September 27, 2021 at 1:54 pm

@apr911 Ah, so it’s a useless term then because it does not take into account the cause of the symptoms but just the symptoms itself. Got it.

    • apr911

      September 27, 2021 at 1:57 pm

@Meowmeow describing accepted medical terminology as useless doesnt make you any less wrong. Its a paradoxical effect of the drug.

Even if we had no understanding of “normal” vs “adhd” and thus decided “normal” behavior was actually the behavior exhibited by the “adhd” patients and thus made the ADHD patients the control group, the drug would still have a paradoxical/opposite effect in the other group

      Go troll somewhere else.

    • Meowmeow

      September 27, 2021 at 2:19 pm

@apr911 Paradoxical means “contradictory”, not “unexpected”. Just call it “unexpected effects if you only know the symptoms and not the cause”, to avoid confusion.

I get that it’s a chemical but it’s so much more than that. It’s understandable to look at it objectively as it’s a real thing, but as anyone who’s done it enough can say, is there not something immaterial there? Something you feel to be just as tangible as that which you could touch yet just beyond your perception? Food for thought.

I’m surprised at how little he knows based on his older interviews. For example Ayahuasca will not treat drug addiction it is used to treat the trauma you are using drugs to mask. Iboga will detox you but they say it can be quite dangerous, people who are desperate to get off heroin will usually take an iboga trip to treat the drug addiction which lasts several days and then an Ayahuasca trip to defeat the trauma which is over in a matter of hours

It’s so frustrating that there’s so much unknown and instead of trying to research every where and everything, things develop stigmas and things are controversial so we don’t research. Due to people’s stupid opinions we could be missing out on ground breaking discovery, cool

Biden is trying to make it easier to research marijuana and even psychedelics so we may be getting closer to discovering more things about it. I haven’t read into it at all but I did see a news article around it so you can google it if you wanna find out more information

ive had great expriences on acid and shrooms, but at a part of every trip i have had except my first one i kind of freak out. I feel like time doesnt move, and nothing going to be normal again. It really makes all the good times not worth it when reality breaks in your mind. I think molly plus shroom/acid would probably make that not happen though, but havent tried it

A great podcast episode to listen to is Jordan Petersen with Roland Griffith’s. Roland has been conducting studies of first time, high dose, psilocybin users. The findings he’s had are unbelievable. Almost like born again experiences. Very fascinating.

I absolutely love Michael Pollan, and have read many of his books, but I doubt even he would agree with being called a psychedelic “expert”. He did of course write 1 book on the subject, and is clearly more knowledgeable than most.

Look I love how shrooms made me feel the first two times but in every other attempt I just can’t deal with the stomach ache and nausea. I’m looking for a similar enlightening that you get with psilocybin but without the nausea. What would y’all reccomend?? LSD or acid? Just looking to be happy so if someone could lmk please!

Lsd be used to dissolute the soul. When “Yale pricks” aka Greek Police Force & “The Fam”/Fema” pricks dippped Geronimo’s head in acid, it means they were using lsd to dissolute his human soul.

    Geronimo = your anima/your soul.

    Acid = lsd.

    THAT IS EVIL!
